Murder at the lake

"I..., I was with my brother, Billy, at the lake next to our town. I know that we are not allowed to swim in this lake, but the kids of my town are used to refreshing themselves in this lake. On that day, I was with my two best friends and my mom asked me to bring my little bro and his best friend with us. As usual we decided to do a little race through the lake even if we all knew that Billy would win. We hoped to beat him. He swam so well that I nicknamed him 'Fishy'. He learnt how to swim at the same time he learnt to walk. This time as the other time he was the first one, but when we finished the race he had disappeared. Firstly, we thought he was tricking us, because he loves joke but after 10 minutes we began to panic. We called him for quiet long time, and suddenly we heard my best friend screaming. She had found my brother. He was dead. When I saw the body of Billy floating in the water, I ran to him and took him in my arms. His little body was covered in mud. And when he was in my arms, I understood he would never be alive again and we would never make a race on this damn lake again."

The private detective, sitting on a chair in front of Billy's sister, Irene, and her parents, stands up to go in front of the windows to watch the stars which had begun to appear in the sky of the end of autumn. He then speaks, stroking his beard: 'And what makes you think it was not an accident?'

His lunar voice gets Irene's mother angry. Wasn't he interested in the case of her son's death, has he only listened to Irene?

"I think you didn't listen..."

The man stops the mother with a calm voice.

"In fact, I was talking to your daughter Mrs Allen."

"Well, Irene says, as I have already said he was a very good swimmer and when I found him, he had a strange wound around his ankle. The water was murky so I don't know what could have done that. The police think it is an accident and now the case is closed. That is why we came to see you." The detective suddenly turns around, he has a strange gleam in his eyes half bright half crazy. This case rejoices him, and, in his brain, there are many hypotheses to test, good ones and bad ones. He kicks out his three clients and slams the door behind them. Once alone he calls "Max? What do you think about this case?" Max enters the room and sits down in an armchair which was taken by Mr Allen a few minutes before. The detective speaks again:

"Well! This is a difficult case. There could be two resolutions: whether it is an animal who attacked him, which is very unlikely, and the police would be right, what is rare, or it is a murder. Another child drowned him. He was maybe jealous."

He turns himself in front of his bookshelf and began his research about the marine animals of Scotland which live in the lake. He finds an article about catfish which lives in the water of this lake. He grabs his coat and invites Max to follow him in this adventure. Firstly, he would like to go next to the lake to see if there is a tourist office who can inform him about marine life and secondly, he would like to question the other kids.

Once at the crime scene, they spend one night at the hotel. Living in Edinburgh it was more practical to sleep on the spot. The next day at the first hour, they go to the lake. The water was murky as Irene said. When they go to the tourist office, they see something they didn't expect. A monster. It looks like a human for its teeth. They are extremely sharp, as fangs. It resembles a naked human female with hairs like algae. After a few seconds the detective realizes the monster has gills and suction cups on the hands which make its fingers became like tentacles. The monster is on all the posters of the tourism office and the guide even sells stuffed monster. The detective asks his inner heart who could buy this horror but overrides and asks the guide which creatures we can find in the lake.

"Oh! Didn't you see the poster? The only "animal" in this lake is the monster of Feamainn, the one who killed your kid! We say that once every ten years it comes out of the water and murders a bad kid. And you know what? Before Billy it's been 10 years since a kid had not disappeared."

Realizing that he will not get anything better from this woman who is ready for anything to sell stuffed monsters. He leaves the shop followed by his friend to question the kids, but he comes back empty-handed too. All the kids seem to be innocent. Once back in the misty street of the town." We are at deadlock my poor Max!". He says to his friend who doesn't answer anything back but another voice sounds:

"No sir, I can tell you we are not!"

This voice come from behind the mist. It was an old woman who moves with a cane and doesn't seem trustworthy, but the detective lets her speak:

"The monster of Feamainn took my son 30 years ago, his brother 20 years ago and the son of their sister 10 years ago. And now he has taken one of my grandsons, Billy. Our family is cursed! We must organize an expedition at the bottom of the lake to find and kill the monster!"

As a good scientist, the detective doesn't believe this story for a second, but this old fool gives him ideas. He has a hypothesis to check. And without a word for this woman he leaves and resumes the conversation with his loyal friend." This is interesting, very interesting! It seems as if somebody has something against this family. Let's go to Billy's house."

Arriving at the house he asks to see Billy's bedroom to find something that could help him in his case. And he was right, he finds two notebooks which will be decisive in this story. After that all became clear in his head. He gathers the family in the living room and begins his presentation:

"I know why Billy is dead. He drowned after having a heart attack."

"Don't be ridiculous!" s His mother says "We learnt to Billy to scream when in troubles in the water! What you're saying is simply impossible!"

"But let me finish good Lord! As Billy's diary taught me a few minutes ago Billy and his best friend Harry liked to fight, kindly. Harry has practiced very hard to swim for 2 or 3 years. Now he was nearly as fast as his friend. During the race Harry caught Billy's ankle to pass over him. But when Billy was under water, he had a heart attack. Billy had a heart condition, I found it in his health book. As he was under the water no one heard him scream. So, he died accidentally as the police said, they were right for one time."

He leaves the house letting the bereaved family to face the shock and goes back to the train station. He asks two tickets, one for him and one for the loyal companion of all his adventures, Max a handsome Dalmatian. And while the train runs along the Lake, Max begins to bark furiously but the detective is already asleep rocked by the soft and steady noise of the train. Max continues to bark against a creature coming out of the water which looks like a human except for its teeth and its gills. They are extremely sharp, as fangs. It resembles a naked human female with hairs like algae.
