Who Is He?

1776

New York City

Laurens

I was out having a drink with the boys. Hercules was on my left, Lafayette on my right. Shot glasses littered our table, both empty and full. A few of the empty ones were tipped over on their sides, having been knocked over by the haphazard, half-drunken way we put them down after knocking them back. A large mug of beer sat in front of Lafayette as well. My face was hot and I could see a pinkish flush even in the darker skin tones of my friends.

The bar was packed, loud talk and bellowing drunken laughter pouring from the men that filled it. The atmosphere was stuffy, yet an air of excitement buzzed all around us. The revolution was fast approaching, everyone could feel it. Most people had read Paine's newest pamphlet, it captured the American spirit. Freedom was coming, we only had to reach out and take it for ourselves. It was the reason I was in New York City anyway and not back home in South Carolina, the same reason Lafayette was also here and not in France. Now, Hercules had a tailoring  apprenticeship in the city, but he was there for the cause as well. We all wanted to join the fight.

In the clamor of the dimly lit pub, I watched over the rim of my pint as two men walked in. It was Aaron Burr, Jr. and a young man I didn't recognize.

I called out to them as they came closer, purposefully raising my voice to gain their attention. "Well if it ain't the prodigy of Princeton College." My Southern twang was a bit more noticeable due to the copious amounts of alcohol I had consumed.

Hercules looked over, noticing them. "Aaron Burr," his slurring, deep voice rung out in that amicable Irish lilt of his.

Lafayette spared Burr a meager glance, grabbing another shot off the table and swiping a couple more from the tray of a passing waitress as he grumbled something under his breath in French.

"Have a seat, Burr." I waved him and his companion over, beckoning them to the table.

As always Burr looked mildly annoyed with us, but he took a seat anyway. His friend awkwardly sat next to him after hesitating for a moment; he stayed quiet as he examines our faces.

"So what is the 'revolutionary set' up to this evening?" Burr asked, giving a hint of his rarely seen smile.

I laughed. "We were actually just talking about the revolution. We're all going to join, you know. Those redcoats are in for it when I get on the battleground."

Lafayette spoke up, "oui, mon ami (yes, my friend). I came all the way from France to help the colonies. The King can casse-toi (fuck off), I'm the best soldier in this outfit." He threw back another shot.

I saw Burr's friend crack a smile, I think he could understand Lafayette's French as well as I did. I was fluent, so of course I laughed at him.

Hercules grinned drunkenly, I'm not sure if he was really following the conversation anymore. He turned to Burr's still unnamed companion, "I am Hercules Mulligan. Up in it, lovin' it, yes I heard ya mother said 'come again?'"

"Ayyyy." Lafayette and I egged him on, enjoying his antics.

"Lock up ya daughters and horses, of course it's hard to have intercourse over four sets of corsets."

"Wow." Lafayette breathed out a small chuckle.

I snickered along with him. "No more sex once we hit camp, boys." I looked down at my mostly empty pint. "Yo, pour me another brew, Laf." He slid the mug of ale towards me so I could refill mine. "Let's raise a couple more to the revolution!" I took a swig of my refreshed drink as Hercules and Lafayette each had another shot, even Burr and his mystery friend took a shot.

I rested my pint back on the rough brown wood of the table. "What about you, Mr. Burr?" Although I was older than him, my Southern upbringing still caused me to address him as such. He certainly acted older than me anyway.

He shook his head at me, chuckling good-naturedly. "Good luck with that. I think I'll wait to see which direction this 'revolution' is going before I jump in. I mean, it hasn't even really even begun yet."

I furrowed my brow at him and I notice his friend scrutinize him oddly as well from the corner of my eye. "What about Lexington and Concord last year? That definitely started it all."

Burr gave me a bored look. "And what's happened since then?"

I huffed in irritation. "Burr, the revolution's imminent. What do you stall for?"

His mystery friend arched one black eyebrow at him. "If you stand for nothing, Burr, what'll you fall for?"

"Ooh." Hercules and Lafayette laughed at his calling out of Aaron.

"Now, who are you?" Lafayette asked, turning to the young man who'd finally decided to speak up.

"Yeah, who are you?" Hercules echoed.

"And what are you gonna do, kid?" I asked, he definitely looked younger than me.

I finally took the time to really look this guy over. He had a sleek black ponytail, tan skin, dark brown eyes that burned with intelligence far beyond his years, and an unfamiliar accent. He intrigued me for sure. Who is he and what is he doing here?

He seemed to focus on me when he answered. "Alexander Hamilton, and there's a million things I haven't done, but just you wait." His words were bold and passionate.

I definitely wanted to get to know this guy.
