VotDT Love Triangle

Some of these new stories have characters of my own instead of the reader's insert. I hope you don't mind! Oh and they may be a tad longer....

Jane Caraway stepped through the Scrub's front doorway, peeking her head in before shouldering herself into the house.

"Mrs. Scrub? I brought the carrots you wanted." She looked around, her arms full of vegetables from her mother's little garden. "I even brought some of my mum's cucumbers and tomatoes."

Spotting Mr. Scrub sitting in the corner of the front room buried in a newspaper, Jane set the food down on the kitchen counter. But before she could even open her mouth to ask where the others were, Mr. Scrub lifted one finger that pointed to upstairs. With a small nod, she knew he couldn't see, Jane happily made her way up the steps, eager to see her friends.

Well two of them were her friends. Lucy and Edmund. Eustace....not so much. He may be her neighbor but it wasn't until she ran into Lucy while out window shopping that Jane started coming over. But it wasn't until she met Edmund that Jane started coming over often.

Jane was from Scotland originally and had moved to England nearly a year ago. So to say she had friends was a bit of a stretch. She didn't make them easily because for some reason people either found her intimidating or too weird. At first she didn't mind. But then it started to get to her. So, when Lucy invited her over for tea and dinner, Jane couldn't say no. The two became fast friends and the Shrub's didn't care what went on in their house so it was a common site to see the two girls up late at night reading or giggling about boys.

One night Lucy brought up Edmund's name and Jane had to try her hardest not to seem even the least bit affected even by merely his name. But Lu wasn't stupid. Jane knew of some of her stories of a place called Narnia and Lucy and her siblings being Kings and Queens there. So it came as no surprise when Lucy used her royal tactics on Jane to divulge her secrets. But Jane stood her ground and got away with only telling half a truth, that she found her friend's brother a very nice young man who, just like his sister, made her feel welcome and wanted.

But since that night Jane soon found herself all but madly in love with him. So she tried to keep her distance, made sure not to laugh at all his jokes, mess around with him like she used to, or look at him too long while he spoke. Alas, Lucy noticed something was off and started to keep an eye on her. Even Eustace started to find his neighbor to be acting quite strangely.

So as Jane took the steps by two, she told herself that she was just going to be herself and treat Ed like she had before. Like everything was normal and her heart wasn't about to beat right out of her chest every time she saw him, or how her breath would pause as he would glance at her or smile.

Or how he did this little thing where when she walked in the room he would step back to sand by her and help her feel included. Or how he was growing out his hair and a soft curl would fall into his eyes from time to time making him run his hands through his hair. Or how then he said her name it was like a little laugh on the tip of his tongue that made her insides melt. Or how....

Jane shook her head. Now was not the time to get herself all worked up when she was supposed to be acting natural. At the top of the steps Jane suddenly heard shouting. Walking around she listened as the voices got louder. It wasn't until she found herself standing outside Lucy's room that she noticed the ground was a bit wet. Puzzled she reached for the handle and stepped into the room, the three others' voices shouting about a painting and putting it back. So when Jane opened the door she was expecting them to be fighting over who would best place it on levely...not fighting over how to stop a near river of water that was spilling out of it!

Stepping in and quickly closing the door behind her, Jane rushed over to help pull Lucy from the picture frame that Eustace was trying to grab at. Edmund and Lucy yelled at him but the roaring of the water gushing into the room drowned out their words. Lucy turned to Jane when she felt herself being pulled back.

"Jane!"

That drew Edmund's attention and he reached out to the girls but not before everyone suddenly sunk under the water. Looking around, Jane found herself floating underwater with the rest of the room's contents, the water surprisingly clear. She would have stayed underwater for a bit longer had her lungs not been screaming for air. The four kids pushed themselves up and to the surface of the water, but what Jane saw nearly made her forget how to swim.

There, just a few meters away was a large ship. A large sailing ship with a mast, sail, and roaring dragon's head at the bow. It was absolutely magnificent. And coming straight for them. There was shouting and pointing, the men she could see on the ship were rushing about, clearly having seen them in the water.

Eustace was making a ruckus as Lucy sputtered, treading water next to Jane. Edmund made his way over to Jane, his mind already reeling with ways to explain to the girl how this was all possible. But Jane was too busy watching three men jump into the water to really ask any questions just yet.

Two of the men swam to Eustace and Lucy, helping them to the side of the ship as it drew closer. The third, with long dark hair and a beard, swam up to Jane, shamelessly wrapping his arm around her waist. She was about to push him off when Edmund let out a shout of surprise.

"Caspian?"

The dark haired man smiled, nearly making Jane forget how to swim for a second time. His dark eyes lit up as he looked around, recognizing his friends in the water.

"Edmund! Lucy!"

A wave hit Jane as the ship drew closer. Caspian looked down at her and smiled. "I have you."

Jane just nodded, willingly letting him guide her to the side of the looming ship. He helped her onto a small platform that was lowered into the water. Caspian kept his arm around her nodding to the rope on her side.

"Don't worry. Hold on."

Jane let out a little squeak as the two of them were lifted out of the water and onto the ship. She had to do her absolute best to keep her eyes fixed on something other than the tight wet clothes on the finely sculpted man next to her. Once on board, Caspian draped her with a blanket before taking one himself, leading her over to Lucy who hugged her.

Jane started shaking, from the cold or her nerves, she wasn't sure. Looking around, the young Scotsman tried her best to keep the suddenly growing worry out of her voice as she finally spoke.

"Where are we?"

Caspian came over with Edmund, the both of them beaming. Edmund looked to Lucy and they shared a smile. Jane looked to Caspian as he rubbed his hair with a towel. He nodded to the siblings and gestured to the ship.

"Welcome to Narnia. A place well known to King Edmund and Queen Lucy."

Jane's eyes went wide. So the stories were true? The young girl opened her mouth but before she could get a single word out, Eustace let out a shout and fell to the ground in a heap of unconsciousness. A large buffalo looking animal shrugged his shoulders and gave Caspien a puzzled look.

But Jane looked at her fallen neighbor and was trying to figure out what was more shocking than the other; the fact she was on a ship in a land she thought was a work of fiction, or the fact Eustace had fainted on the ground and Jane nearly agreed with his reaction.

~~~~~
Several days past and jane found herself gradually getting used to the idea of being here. Clearly Edmund and Lucy had been here before. They spoke with the talking animals like they had known them for years. Eustace was a downright bother, so she did her best to keep clear of him, her own anxiety nearly almost too much for her to handle already.
One cool night, Jane found herself on the deck of the ship, looking out at the water that trailed behind the great ship, the light of the moon and various lanterns flickering on the salty surface. Jane closed her eyes and let out a breath as she tried to calm her rapid thoughts. She was in a distant land with talking animals, fictional creatures, and handsome kings leading honorable expeditions to find lost lords. If someone had told her there was a mermaid kingdom under the ship, Jane would have just nodded and gone to bed in hopes of never waking up again.
She just wanted to see Edmund that morning, not fall into a bedtime story.
A sound behind her made Jane's breath hitch. Footfalls echoed across the quiet deck as they confidently carried her visitor closer to her. Not wanting anymore surprises, Jane turned with her hand placed on the hilt of the small dagger Edmund had given her. But the tension in her shoulders fell as Caspian came to a stop just a few places behind her, his hands raised and his lips pulled in an impressed smirk.
"Stay your blade, warrior. I mean you no harm."
Jane laughed weakly as she turned back to look at the water, pushing her short hair out of her face. "sorry. I suppose I'm a bit on edge."
Caspian came to stand next to her, his hands on the thick spoken railing as his hair moved in the wind. "I don't blame you. I, too, was startled out of reason when I met the Narnians for the first time."
Jane looked at him. "You haven't always been with them?"
Caspian shook his head, laughing lightly. "oh no. My people fought them, tried to rid the land of them. But the Narnians had hope and faith in me to change that."
Jane nodded, looking down at her hands that fiddled with the end of her long sleeved shirt that she wondered may have been his. "it seems that worked out for you. Now you are their king. A king they respect."
"Not without trials."
"Will there be many of those?"
Caspian turned to her, his brows pinched. "many what?"
Jane turned to him, leaning her hip on the railing. "Trials. Will there be many trials on your voyage? Will you find your lords quickly?"
The king opened his mouth but Edmund's voice sounded instead, making them turn. The young man stood a little bit away, his eyes flickering beteenthe two of them. Jane's heart leapt seeing him looking at her so earnestly.
"Jane, Lucy is looking for you. We were worried."
Jane nodded then turned to Caspian, affording him a small smile. But before she turned to leave, she felt a hand on her arm making her look back at Caspian. He leaned in and spoke low, his eyes kind and voice sincere.
"I hope there aren't any terrible trails. If there were to be any trouble, Miss Jane, I will do all in my power to keep you safe." Caspian looked to Edmund and his expression changed but Jane didn't know to what. "As would he," he turned back to her, stepping back and dropping his hand from her arm, "Sleep well, Miss Jane."
Jane nodded, bowing her head slightly. "Thank you, Caspian."
Then she turned to Edmund who nodded to his friend before placing his hand on Jane's lower back, his head near hers.
"Are you alright?"
Jane turned to him with a smile. "Quite. Thank you, Edmund."
Suddenly Jane didn't want to go with Edmund, she wanted to stay atop the ship and speak with Caspian and hear his stories about becoming king and living among the Narnians. Before Edmund lead her below decks, Jane turned her head to glance at the King one last time. But Caspian was already looking at her, his lips pulled up in a small smile. Jane quickly turned away, her back tingling where Edmund was touching her. Eyes wide, Jane found herself unable to sleep as the faces of two dark haired men occupied her mind.
~~~~~

Wind whipped at the sails as rain fell violently, making it hard to see. Men yelled and weapons were drawn as The Dawn Treader sailed deeper into the dark green mist. Jane held fast to her long sword as wisps of the green mist swirled about her. Lucy stood beside her, her bow nocked and ready to aim. Edmund stood in front of Jane, his stance wide and his face stoic as he looked around the ship.

Caspian called for everyone to stay calm, that there wasn't anything attacking them. He looked down and caught Jane's eye, his face showing a mixture of worry and uncertainty. Jane wondered why everyone was acting so strangely when there seemed to be no threat. But as a tendril of smoke billowed after her, she suddenly understood.

The ship around her fell into a dark fog and sound became muffled as her mind's eye was filled with every worry and terror that plagued her from childhood to now. Tears filled her eyes and fell down her face as images flashed before her; of her siblings being taken away, her father dying, her best friend calling her names, her stepfather beating her as her mother begged him to stop and to turn his anger to her instead. Edmund yelling at her. Caspian casting her away. Fear and anger riddled her body with hiccuping sobs as she dropped to her knees alongside her sword that fell from her hands.

Around her the rest of the crew was experiencing similar things, their own nightmares blinding their judgment as they forgot where they were. Lucy thought herself ugly and useless. Edmund yelled at the White Witch and felt second rate. Caspian teared up at being told he wasn't good enough. Good enough to be king, to be a leader of Narnia...to be the man to protect Jane.

Suddenly the ship rocked and light spilled onto the ship as the green clouds broke. A great bird came and lead the crew out of emotional danger. Slowly they gained control of their senses, now free of the green mist of nightmares. But Jane was far from freed. Edmund turned to Jane, his first priority was to make sure she was alright. But the look of devastation on her face made him pause. Gently he reached out to touch the quivering girl on the ground. But she pushed him away, her eyes squeezed shut.

Ignoring her name being called by Lucy and both boys who stole her heart; Jane stood and ran, face in hands, as far away from everyone as she could. So that placed her in the bottom of the ship where the sparse cargo and provisions were being held. Sitting upon the last sack of potatoes, Jane pulled her knees up to her face and pressed her eyes into her arm. Her body shook as she suppressed her sobs, her eyes no longer sparing her any tears.

Jane didn't expect anyone to come after her but she wasn't surprised when she felt a presence near her. Ready to yell at them to go away, Jane lifted her head and took a deep breath. But her cry died on in her throat as she stared at a great lion, its eyes coming level to hers.

His golden mane swayed as he stalked forward, his nose nearly coming to touch her arms that wrapped around her legs. Her worries vanished, her heart stilled, her mind became clear. She knew who he was as she stared at him, his name tumbling off her lips in a whisper of awe.

"Aslan..."

His face lit up as a lion's would and he breathed on her arms sending warm chills down her spine. He spoke, his voice deep and comforting, like a warm blanket on a winter's morning.

"Dear child, you have suffered enough. You are now ready."

~~~~
Caspian and Edmund stood outside the cargo door, Lucy having informed them that Jane was busy. Both boys tried to pretend the other wasn't there, but the tension was thick enough to slice with a sword that Caspian finally spoke.
"You love her, don't you?"
Edmund started, his head snapping up. "I could be asking you the same thing."
Caspian laughed, his heart hammering. "I have only just met her. You have known her longer and live in the same realm." Caspian nodded to the shut door. "She suits you."
Edmund narrowed his eyes, not fully confident the tenth Caspian truly meant what he said. "Caspian, I had my chance and was a cotton head and didn't take it when I could have. You should see the way she looks at you." Edmund shook his head, folding his arms. "After everything we have been through, what she has been through, I have seen the way you look at her. She is my friend first and foremost so just...just take care of her, alright?"
Caspian was shocked so all he could do was nod as the Just King left. But the door opened and Jane walked out, effectively diverting Caspian's attention. Jane jumped seeing someone outside the door, but relaxed when Caspian gave her a kind smile.
"Are you alright?"
Jane nodded, rubbing her arm as she only gave him small glances. "Do you happen to know where Edmund is?"
Caspian tried not to feel hurt in her inquiry for the other king. So he smiled, pointing above deck. "He went above. He would be glad to see you." He reached out, touching her arm like before. "Are you sure you are feeling well? You are welcome to rest undisturbed in my cabin if you wish."
Jane looked to him, a ghost of a smile forming. Caspian blushed when he realized his words. Jane watched with amusement as the King fumbled with his words and blushed.
"Not with me of course. By yourself. Unless you don't want to be alone. B-but I can send in Lucy, or you can stay up with the rest of us. I mean-"
Jane shook her head, patting Caspian on the arm. "That's sweet of you, Caspian, but I'm well enough to be up. Thank you."
Caspian nodded, his arm burning where she touched him. He watched her leave to find Edmund. He wasn't lying to the old king when he told him that Jane suited him. Caspian would rather Jane was with Edmund if he himself couldn't have her.
Shaking his head, Caspian left to go tell the captain and crew that they were to make head way to the east and Aslan's Country.
~~~~~

Jane stood on the white beach holding back her blowing hair, the sand cool and the air warm. The wall of water that separated the living from Aslan's country rushed quietly as if trying to be sacred. Reepicheep had just volunteered to cross over, leaving the rest of the group teary eyed and crestfallen. But Jane knew this was where it was going to get hard.

Aslan turned to Edmund and Lucy, nodding just enough for Edmund to understand. He turned to Lucy and Eustace, nodding to the watery veil.

"It's time Lu. Eustace. Jane."

Caspian looked to his friends, his eyes already red from choosing to stay and from losing his trusted mouse. Now he had to say goodbye to the Pevensies all over again. Eustace was a pain but had changed quite literally. And Jane...

Jane.

Jane made the fallen stars on Ramandu's island look like pale shells. Her smile made him weak. Her laugh made his heart soar. Her ability to learn quickly with the sword and made fast friends impressed him to no end. But most of all, her love and confidence in her beliefs made her as strong as the Kings and Queens of old. Worth to be a leader herself.

But now she was leaving him, just as he had always know. But that didn't make the parting any easier. New tears threatened to fall as the four of them turned to Caspian, ready to say their goodbyes.

Lucy hugged him tight, promising him she will never forget him and wished him the happiness of the world. Eustace apologized for being a nuisance but they all laughed when reminded of how useful he was as a dragon. Then came Edmund, his eyes red from holding back his own tears. He hugged Caspian like he would Peter, tight and strong. Caspian stepped back and clasped him on his shoulder with a smile.

"It was an honor to serve along side you again King Edmund."

Edmund smiled. "And I you, Caspian. The people of Narnia are truly in good hands. Don't doubt yourself."

Jane watched on, her hands shaking at her side as she clenched fistfulls of her pants. She tried not to think about her home and the people of Narnia. She tried not to think about what Aslan told her when she shut herself up in the cargo bay. She also tried not to think about leaving the place she had come to know and love.

Edmund turned to Jane, nodding to Caspian. But she didn't move. Aslan stepped forward, nudging her arm gently. Turning, Jane nearly shook her head at the great lion, not yet ready. But Aslan smiled with his eyes kindly at her, shaking his mane slightly.

"Now child. It is time."

Nodding her head Jane moved. But she didn't go to hug Caspian. She went to go stand in front of Edmund, Lucy, and Eustace, her eyes already welling with tears.

"Please tell my mother I love her. And please don't forget me."

Lucy burst into tears, falling onto Jane's neck as the Scotswoman also let her tears fall. Eustace hugged her next, whispering that he will miss her garden soup. Then came Edmund, the only one of the group who was smiling at her unvoiced decision. He stepped up to her, taking her hands in his. He looked her in the eyes, his thumbs tracing over her knuckles.

"Promise that you won't forget us too."

Jane smiled weakly. "Never."

Edmund swallowed, letting out a low breath as he shook his head slightly. "I'm sorry..." he started but Jane didn't let him finish.

Reaching up on her tiptoes, Jane leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his forehead, his eyes closing as he sighed. Stepping back, Jane smiled at him and nodded to the open doorway that lead back to England.

"You have nothing to be sorry about. You will find yourself a wonderful wife and forget all about me."

Edmund started to protest but Jane laughed, slugging him lightly on the arm. "Hush now. Stay any longer and I won't let you go."

Edmund nodded, pressing a quick kiss to her cheek. "Long live Queen Jane," he whispered and winked before turning to leave.

Jane stood there with tears falling down her face as her three dear friends left Narnia, never to return again. Aslan roared and the portal closed, leaving Jane behind. But she wasn't alone. A hand gently slipped into hers. Jane turned from her friends and looked to Caspian, his face looking puzzled.

"Jane," he whispered, blinking, "Why...you...how..."

Jane smiled looking down at their hands. "Aslan visited me. He helped me see what it was that my heart was trying to tell me." She closed her eyes and slowly shook her head as she continued, "Getting captured, Eustace the Dragon, the sea serpent, the death water, the Dufflepuds, the dark island...the nightmares..." Jane shivered.

Caspian stepped forward, his other hand reaching out to touch her shoulder. He looked down to see her eyes, tears glistening on her cheek. "I had hoped there would be no trials, but it seems that that was all there was."

Jane smiled, even laughed a little but she turned her attention to the wall of water again, her heart heavy of the life she will be leaving behind.

"But through it all you kept your promise. You saved me. You kept me safe. You looked after me. And you stole my heart. No matter how much I wish and yearn to go back home I don't think I would ever be happy like I am when I'm around you."

Caspian smiled and let his feelings take over his actions. Reaching up his hand from her shoulder, Caspian softly placed it on Jane's cheek, turning her head to look at him. And in one fluid motion he placed his lips on hers, pulling her close.

Jane cried but tears of joy as she wrapped her arms around her King's neck, her heart leaping with every kiss. Finally, Caspian pulled away, but only just. He stroked her cheek as they smiled at each other.

"Then may we never part and we shall be happy for all eternity."

There was a roar of agreement behind them, making the couple jump but their smiles never faltered. Aslan nodded to them, his eyes full of nothing but pure happiness.

"Jane, my daughter, I am proud of your choice. Now Caspian, I believe it is time to present to your people their new Queen."
