Your heart hurt as you watched the Skullcrawler push Kong to the ground, the large ape roaring in protest but too weak to do anything. The Skullcrawler then looked up, his beady eyes peering back at you through your camera making your skin crawl.
Suddenly you let out a yelp as you felt an arm wrap around your middle as pick you up with ease, carrying you away from the huge creatures.
"Kongs down. Let's go!" Conrad's voice sounded in your ear as he set you down in front of him to start running.
The two of you booked it, catching up with the rest of the group. You hoped that the scientists decided to stay just a little bit longer. The group came to a sliding stop, the muddy ground kicking up and splashing your pants.
"This is the edge of the island," Conrad said breathlessly. You nodded in agreement.
You gazed out at the fallen ships covered in ivy as they sat motionless in the bay. You turned to Conrad, his eyes searching the place as his mind worked out what to do next.
Off to the side was a tall rock face, not too far but not too close from where the boat would pass by. Conrad glanced at you, nodding up at the rock face.
"(L/n), climb up those rocks and fire a flare. With any luck, Brooks will see it."
A sudden crashing sound from behind made the two of you turn. Your heart started to hammer as you looked to Conrad and he looked to you. He reached his hand out, the back of his fingers gently grazing your own.
"We'll buy you some time."
You took a deep breath and nodded then took off, not looking back as the sounds grew louder. You didn't stop when you hear thick snapping the trees fall and a bone-rattling roar filled the air. Instead, you pushed harder, running to the base of the rock wall. Before you started climbing you heard voices yelling. It wasn't until a few moments later you heard a loud explosion, shaking the area around you that made you turn. Off in the distance, you saw the others wading into the water, one of them being dragged off as he cried out.
You turned back to your task, not wanting to let them down, and hurried up the rock face as fast you could. You made it to the top, where the wind had picked up a bit, tossing your hair about. You watched with wide eyes as the king of the Skullcrawlers came rushing around a large rock mound chasing Conrad and the rest of the soldiers. You called out to them despite the fact you knew they couldn't hear you. Blood drained from your face as you watched the lizard open its mouth and leap.
Right before the Skullcrawler landed on them Kong suddenly came crashing out of nowhere, a rock in his hand, bashing it on the monster's head. You heard Conrad call for the others to run. As Kong and the Skullcrawler fought tooth and nail, you suddenly remembered why you were up there. You reached down in your satchel and pulled out the flare. With conviction, you lifted it in the air and fired.
You saw Conrad and the group pause to look up at you but the two beasts didn't bat an eye. With nothing better to do but stand there, you watched as one tried to overtake the other. It was all happening so fast. But it became apparent who was going to win. Kong looked tired and was starting to struggle. Your hand flew to your mouth as the Skullcrawler pushed Kong into the old boats, tangling him up in the chains and ruble. Kong tried to get up but he couldn't as the lizard stood atop him, his jaw opening wide for a killing blow.
Suddenly you jumped as bullets went flying, hitting the side of the Skullcrawler and drawing its attention away from the trapped ape. Brooks manned the guns as San piloted. You let out a cry of surprise and happiness, your face breaking out into a smile.
Down below the others rushed to the boat while Brooks kept the great lizard at bay. Suddenly the bullets stopped. At the same time, the Skullcrawler decided he had enough of being pelted with harmless bullets. Your breathing quickened as you watched the Skull Demon draw closer to your friends.
Noise from the ship wreckage drew your attention. You watched with growing pride as Kong fought through the chains that held him captive.
"Come on, come on, come on!"
Terrified he was going to be overtaken, an idea popped in your mind. You reached into your bag pulling out one last flare. Locked and loaded you brought your arm up, closed one eye and aimed for the lizard idiot's head. With a breath you fired, the flair glaring through the air and exploding on impact in an array of red sparks as it hit the Skullcrawlwer right in the eye.
But it didn't seem to faze him, only irritate him even more. Suddenly the valley was once again filled with the echoes of the boat gun going off, shooting at the two-legged monster. But it wasn't going for the boat anymore. You spotted a single person running in the opposite direction, calling for the great lizard's attention.
"Conrad, you idiot, get out of there!" You yelled but it was no use. You turned to look at Kong. "Come on big guy, it's your turn."
Your heart swelled as you watched Kong use a chain and cargo boat propeller as a weapon, dragging the Skullcrawler away from your captain. Kong took the upper hand, strangling and wounding the lizard effectively. Kong swung him around, the propeller lodged in the monster's back.
Your excitement for the turn of events soon turned to fear as you watched in slow motion as Kong flung the Skullcrawler into the side of one of the half-sunken mountains. The one you were standing on. You let out a cry, holding your arms up to shield you as the rock face shook and you were carelessly tossed off your perch, your name echoing in the valley as you fell backward, blindly, into the water below.
You were engulfed in darkness as the hit of the water rendered you unconscious. You were suddenly thrown back into the memory of you and Conrad looking out over a vantage point for Packard and his ridiculous bombs. The memory of when Kong suddenly showed up. You remembered being all sorts of petrified.
You reached out to grab Conrad's hand feeling his own fear as he pulled you a little closer to him. You then stood in awe as you both watched Kong approach, his countenance guarded but curious until he stood right before you, his head at your level where your eye couldn't help but connect.
Drawn by an unseen force you stepped forward your hand reaching out to touch him. Conrad tried to pull you back but didn't try very hard as you resisted his pull. With a tentative hand, you touched Kong's snout as you stared into his eyes.
Thunderous emotions washed over you as he looked you over, his breath moving your hair and drying the tears that fell down your face. utter amazement was not a strong enough phrase to name what you were feeling. It was like Kong was suddenly human, suddenly as real as yourself instead of this mindless monster poised to kill.
Kong was large and intimidating and knew he was stronger than you and you could see his will to protect you and the others in his eyes. Sudden explosions off to the side drew our attention, making you step back as Kong roared. Conrad reached for your hand again as you both watched Kong take off in the direction of Packard and his explosives.
Conrad called your name to go, but you didn't want to you wanted to stay and be with Kong. You wanted to understand him. You wanted to protect him like he did you and the others. Conrad called your name louder but this time started to shake you.
With a gasp, you sat up, your mind back to present day as you tried to replace the water in your lungs with air. Conrad sat next to you, his eyes full of concern. You clung to him as you tried to get your bearings, your heart beating wildly. The splashing of water made you turn. It was Kong walking, his body all bloodied up but the lizard was nowhere to be found.
Kong turned to look back at the both of you. Suddenly those emotions from last night came crashing down again. He had saved your life just as you had saved his. Tears fell as you held onto Conrad, the both of you watching the king of the island walk off to nurse his wounds.
You turned to Conrad and collapsed into his arms. You silently wept into his shoulder as he held you tight, your emotions from the past few days all rushing back to you. You felt Conrad stroke your back and your hair, his hold sure and warm. You pulled back and he took your face in his hands as he looked you in the eyes.
"Are you alright?"
You reached up a hand and covered one of his. "I am now."
Conrad smiled brought your face closer to his own. Pleased with this turn of events you willingly moved closer, sighing as his lips capture yours. you kissed softly for a moment before he pulled back, kissing your forehead before moving his hands to our shoulders. You shared a smile as the reality of the situation started to settle in. Conrad reached up and tucked some hair behind your ear before nodding his head to the boat, his eyes never leaving yours.
"Let's go home."
