Humphrey Goodman
VettelFerrari Here ya go love, hope ya like it! Sorry it's so long, I got carried away haha
Humphrey smiled lamely as he watched you at the market, smiling and laughing with the kind local vendors. You happened to cross paths as you were walking to the small market to restock your kitchen and he was leaving the station. Your heart leapt when he offered to wait for you, wanting to catch up. You smiled and offered to make him dinner once you got what you needed.
The British detective fidgeted as you paid for your food and waved goodbye, making your way over to him. You were beautiful, he had always thought so. But he could never bring himself to tell you. Once he got called to come to the Islands he was excited, not only for the detective work but for the chance to see you. With his wife out of the picture, the flame he once held for you burned anew.
You had moved here after two years of college and you were loving it. You and Humphrey were a bit more than acquaintances before you left, leaving mutual feelings unsaid. But once he got married you learned to guard your heart. Now that he was here, you weren't sure what to think.
You smiled as he offered to take some of the bags. Nodding you handed him some as you held others. "Thank you. Now, what do you feel in the mood to eat?"
Humphrey bit his lip making sure to look everywhere but at you, not wanting you to see his blush. Your voice still gave him a rush. "Um...I'm actually not too picky at the moment. What did you purchase, perhaps we can choose that way."
You let out a little laugh. As agreeable as alway. "Well, I was thinking chicken and rice, steamed veggies and beans."
He cleared this throat, nodding as the blush started up again. You still scrunched your nose when you smiled, something he found extremely attractive. "Sounds splendid. Now tell me," he transferred the bags to one hand and reached his arm out for you to take, "how are you liking it here. It's been, what, five years?"
You smiled up at him, the lock around your heart slowly coming undone. The two of you walked the distance to your place, talking and catching up as if you had been close for years. You had forgotten how well the two of you got on, how nice it was to be talking to someone who knew how you thought and made you feel like you were important.
You let out a laugh as he finished a story from one of his last cases. Humphrey had to remind himself to breathe as he caught himself holding his breath at the wide smile you sent him. He stumbled through your door, causing you to let out another laugh.
You set your things down on the counter, grabbing an apron and got started on dinner. "I'm glad to see you are still clumsy, as always."
Humphrey let out a nervous chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck as he took a seat at your bar, watching you get to work. "I suppose no amount of time will change the fact I am still stuck in my head."
You heard the underlining guilt in his tone making a small sad smile pull at your lips. You looked up and took a moment to really look at him. His hair was still long, though tamed a bit more than it was at Uni. That must be because of his wife. He still dressed smartly and his eyes still darted around the room drinking in each detail as his running mind tried to decipher your life. You blinked and got back to work.
"Don't be so hard on yourself. It's not like you aren't using that to your advantage and the advantage of the department. Surely they are thankful for it." You flashed him a smile.
"I suppose. Thank you (Y/n)." He watched you work, feeling a bit odd not doing anything. He stood, walking lazy circles around your place. "Are you sure you don't need any assistance? I'm sure I can cut a few veggies without messing up too terribly."
You giggled, waving him off with a stirring spoon. "Don't worry yourself, you're the guest and I find cooking to be soothing. Besides, it's just the two of us, it won't take too long now."
Humphrey nodded, giving you a small smile. "If you insist."
The two of you continued to talk as you cooked, as he placed the table, as you both sat to eat and as you picked at your dessert. Humphrey was at is leisure, completely relaxed and enjoying himself more than he ever felt before.
But he wasn't the only one feeling that way, and that bothered you. You found yourself flirting with a married man. You didn't think to look at his hand, having no reason to need to. It wasn't until he reached across the table and took your hand that you felt like you were going to be sick. This was not right.
You quickly stood, taking the dirty dishes and busying yourself with cleaning them. Humphrey, being a detective, saw your diverting actions and sat back, rubbing the place where his wedding band used to rest. He was worried to show you, not knowing how you felt about him. Worried to get his hopes up.
He was pleased to see there were no traces of a man in your life, thought he shouldn't be happy about it, he was. So perhaps he had a chance. If you were willing of course. He stood, taking what remained of the dishes and placed them on the counter for you. He then took up a dish towel and got to work drying the ones you had cleaned.
"Dinner was amazing." Humphrey tried for the complementing technique, worried you would shut him out.
You smiled kindly, but you kept your face away from him, cleaning with a bit more aggression.
He tried again, this time resting a hand on yours, grasping it gently to make you stop scrubbing so harshly. "(Y/n). Have I said something to upset you earlier?"
You let out a breath, dropping the dish and sponge, bracing yourself against the counter. "No, Humph, you were...you are fine. More than fine, you are wonderful. It's just me getting all emotional again."
Humphrey's stomach did a flip at the old nickname, it sounding better coming from your lips. He stared at you, trying to read your expression. Still at a loss, he gently took your shoulders to make you face him the reached under your chin, bringing your eyes up to his.
"I suppose you think me a downright rake for my actions."
You blinked. You were wondering why he was openly taking your sweet words as he dished his own. You felt like you were back at Uni. But even then his now wife was alway in the picture, making it a touch wrong.
Humphrey stood there his hand moving from under your chin to your cheek, his thumb stroking your soft skin. You fought to no lean into his touch, not wanting to egg him on. But because you kept your eyes on him you noticed his face coming alarmingly close.
"Please Humph, you forget yourself," you whispered as you gently pushed away from him. You didn't look back as you stepped out onto your patio, wrapping your arms around your middle. You took deep breaths doing your best to get the image of his eyes landing on your lips out of your mind.
Humphrey let his hand fall, momentarily not understanding your actions. But he quickly caught on when he felt for his ring again but it wasn't there. Perhaps he should have told you he wasn't attached in the way you thought.
Quietly he made his way over to you, keeping his distance. But he took a step forward, bobbing on the balls of his feet. "(Y/n), I believe it is my fault you feel this way. Allow me to explain. I am no longer married."
The rest of what he said went unsaid as your eyes widened and your breath hitched. Was he really? You kept your back to him, not trusting yourself to look at him. But Humphrey had other ideas. After telling you what happened he reached over and took your hand, causing you to turn and look at him. He was smiling, making your already beating heart pick up pace.
"Please (Y/n), accept my apology for not telling you sooner."
You let out a breath, taking a seat as he kept your hand in his. He sat across from you, your knees brushing his. You looked up at him once more, reaching up to stroke his windswept hair to the side.
"Are you really?"
"Really."
"But I don't want to assume you have the same feelings as when we were younger, I had hoped-" but you didn't get to finish your sentence.
Humphrey smiled before he took your face in his hands and eagerly pressed his lips against yours, kissing you once, twice, three times. You forgot your worries as you lost yourself in his kiss, his hands holding you close to him. You had always wondered if he would have been a good kisser. Turns out he was better than you thought.
