Gray Mitchell

"GAHHHHH!" Gray screamed as he fell against the wall clutching his leg, his other hand pulling down on a lever. A large door banged shut next to him just seconds before it landed on his brother's stupid girlfriend as she came stumbling through.

Trev stared at the rattling metal door that separated her from the ravenous dinosaurs behind it, her body shaking and her heart racing. Sweat or blood dripped down her back making her shiver as she breathed heavily, trying to make sense of what had just happened.

Gray let out a groan as he closed his eyes and slid down the cold wall, his hands clutching his wounded leg. Trev looked over to the hurt young man as she wiped silently falling tears from her face. He looked like he was in so much pain, his eyes squeezed shut and his head leaning back against the metal wall. Sweat dripped down his face, his hair plastered to his head with blood that wasn't his. The door shook again but Trev did her best to ignore it as she took steady breaths.

"Hey," she whispered with a shaky voice, crawling over to him. "Are you alright?"

Gray opened an eye and let out a breath, his cheek puffing up before he closed it again. He shifted his body almost as if he was trying to get away from her. His body shook and blood dripped to the ground from the gash on his leg.

"Yeah. Peachy," he breathed through his teeth.

Trev's shoulders sagged as she moved back a bit too lean against a fallen table covered in dust. Looking around, Trev figured this place was some kind of security systems base for the park when it was at its prime. Cables hung from the vine infested ceiling. Little bits of grass and shrubbery made their home in the cracked floor and various parts of the walls. Particles floating through the air was made visible by cold light streaming through cracked windows that weren't blocked by fallen buildings or rotting dinosaur carcasses. From what Trev could see while running through the ruins of this place, she was sure Jurassic World was once an amazing park.

With the adrenaline of the last moments finally wearing off, Gray pulled off his jacket and bunched it up to set under his leg. Wincing, the young man looked at his wound, dried blood cracking and fresh warm blood oozing out onto the floor. He pressed the back of his hand to his mouth as he peeled away the shredded fabric of his pants, revealing three long, deep gashes that stretched from the inside of this left thigh to mid-calf. He groaned as he let his hands drop, sweat dripping into his eyes as he squeezed them shut again.

He heard movement across from him and groaned again. Trev moved over to Gray, sitting next to him against the wall, her nearly black eyes looking over the younger Mitchell with worry.

"We need to cover that. I am a certified RN. Let me help you." She reached over to fold back the shredded fabric but her hand was angrily swatted away.

"You've helped enough."

Trev blinked, her hand stinging from his slap but her heart dropping at the pure hatred that doused his words. Mutley, Trev took her hand back, looking straight forward as she tried to ward off tears.

"I love him too, you know," her voice came out as a whisper, her dirt-smudged hands shaking as she reached up to tuck her knotted bleached hair behind her ears.

Gray scoffed as he pulled himself up off the ground, his injured leg dragging behind him, making marks in the thin layer of dirt on the ground on the way to a fallen chair. He picked it up and righted it with one hand before sitting down heavily. His long curly hair fell into his eyes as he slumped forward, catching his breath.

"Sure you did."

Trev let out a frustrated breath as she stood too, crossing her arms and looking around. "Hey, I didn't ask to come here. If it wasn't for you, he wouldn't have dropped everything to come find you. He wouldn't have left ME, ALONE in that God forsaken buggy in the middle of the jungle, to go after you and your delusional "meta-dinos" that had you cornered. In your own lab!" Trev hiccuped, whipping her grimy face, no doubt making her already ruined makeup even worse. "He would still be alive. Thanks to you I lost my boyfriend, the only man whom I ever loved. The only man I knew who ever loved me."

Trev breathed heavily with emotion and waited, looking at the boy with seething anger with every passing second. But when he started laughing, she about screamed.

Gray first started out just snickering, but it quickly turned to a chuckle than an outright laugh. Trev's eyes widened in disbelief at the boy's lack of sympathy. She opened her mouth to say something but was cut off before she could even begin.

"He was going to propose to you," Gray stated with a ghost of a smile on his lips as his head lulled back enough for his hair to fall away from his face, letting her see his bloodshot teary eyes.

Trev stood still, her body frozen as she processed what Gray was saying, but he wasn't finished.
"He called me three days ago and wanted my opinion on you. He wanted to make sure I was alright with him making the move. To be honest, I wasn't paying much attention to what he was saying, I was elbow deep in my work." Gray sniffed, wiping his nose with the back of his hand as he let out a gargled breath. "I just told him what he wanted to hear. He sounded so happy. I got caught off guard by how he sounded when he talked about you that I screwed something up in my calculations." Gray locked eyes with Trev, his cobalt blue swimming in unshed tears as he went on. "So yeah. It was my fault. It's my fault this happened. It's my fault you no longer have the most perfect boyfriend in the world but you know what?"

Gray stood, pointing his finger hard at his chest as his eyes wild with an emotion she no longer wanted him to feel while his voice grew with both emotion and volume. "I lost my BROTHER! I lost the only BEST FRIEND I have EVER had! I know what I did. I just don't know how I'm going to go around for the rest of my life KNOWING I KILLED MY! BROTHER!"

Tears were streaming down his face like the start of a storm. His body shook with both pain and sorrow as each sob racked his body. He limped on his good leg to keep from falling but he fails.

"I killed my brother Trev," Gray whispered before his face went blank and his body collapsed.
Trev reached forward and caught the boy before he fell on his face, the two of them sitting on the ground in each other's arms. Trev held his curly head against her shoulder as she let him weep against her, her own eyes watering his dirty locks. She closed her eyes and rocked him gently, stroking his hair and rubbing his back.

The image that played in her mind's eye she knew the both of them will never get rid of anytime soon.

Nick had just kissed Trev on the forehead and promised to come back for her, but he needed to get Gray. They had stalled in one of these well-armored buggy things with fairly uncomfortable seats. They were also just a few miles from the facility Gray was using and where his own creation had him trapped. Trav didn't even want to be on this island, she wanted to be out at the movies or show on the couch with her boyfriend. But instead, when Nick got the call from Gray that he was in danger, he obviously couldn't leave him. Due to a chain of horribly timed events, Trev found herself coming with Nick, her eyes opened seeing first off and first hand the horrors that the Mitchell brothers had dealt with a handful of years ago.

So there on an uncomfortable seat, she had to wait, the image of the dead copter pilot seared into her brain as strange noises sounded all around her as it steadily grew darker. She was terrified but there was nothing she could do other than wait. That is until something large tipped over the vehicle without warning, tossing her about and dumping her onto the damp forest ground. Alone and beyond frightened, Trev ran as fast as she was able in the direction she saw Nick go.

By the time she had made it to the facility there were nearly hundreds of these small dinosaurs that came to about mid-thigh. They were terrifying looking, like a mix between a miniature raptor (that she unceremoniously met first when crash landing) and the smallpox virus. Little boils rippled, popped, and oozed all over their bodies. Their teeth were discolored and red, their eyes all glowing green.

Trev knew that she couldn't outrun them so she had to outsmart them, at least. Sad thing was she didn't know how in the world to do that, let alone find a safe place to get to. Right before she was ready to go face that large dino with the vehicle, Trev heard Nick calling her name from somewhere above her. There on the roof of the facility was her boyfriend, reaching over for her to come up to him. Quietly she made her way over to a pile of crates, making as little noise as she could possibly make and scaled the facility, her hand grasping onto Nick's hand as soon as she came into reach.

Both of them now on the roof, Nick directed her on where to go. He found Gray, wounded and safe in a corner. For now. They hurried across the roof, being as quiet as they could. But Trev tripped on an upturned piece of metal, calling out as she fell with a loud thunk onto the rooftop. Nick paused, looking around hoping they didn't notice. But they did.

Nick picked her up and they both ran but not for long. The roof caved in and they fell into the facility, still quite a distance from Gray's position. Dazed and slightly injured, the two of them stumbled through halls and rooms, the sound of the little dinosaurs making their way through the facility's walls. Trev tried her best not to be a burden but more often than not, Nick had to practically drag her through the building, pausing each time a small group of those ankle biters made into the building.

Nick was confident he could get them all to safety, having studied all the buildings Gray would be just for this purpose. But he had forgotten that there was a part where in order to get to the other side of the building you had to go through an underground passage. Trev screamed as they came to a stop at a dead end, Nick looking for the passage. But the dinosaurs were getting too close, their screeching nearly deafening as they bounded closer. A few of the first ones made it to Nick and Trev, nipping at their clothes and legs as they scrambled up on some old piled up tables. That was when Nick saw the passage, pushing Trev toward it.

But he got bit and was being pulled back. Trev did her best to pull Nick back, but they were all starting to latch on and drag him back. Suddenly the passage opened and there stood Gray, panting and throwing sticks on fire at the creatures. They let go of Nick and the three of them ran as best as they could away. But someone had to stay back and close the passage. And naturally, Nick felt that was his job. He pushed his brother and girlfriend into the other side of the building and yelled for them to run.

Trev was devastated and tried to get him to come. But he shook his head, kissed her soundly then pushed her roughly before shutting the passage. Trev and Gray ran, or hobbled, away from the sound of Nick being torn to shreds, his screams filling the building until they came to an abrupt stop.

Gray sniffed as he pulled away from Trev's shoulder, wiping his face and wincing as he pulled himself up on the chair again. Trev scooted over to him, getting a good look at his leg. It looked bad and will definitely scar, but he will heal.

"Do you know if this place has any first aid?" Trev looked up at Gray and nodded to the control room around them. Thankfully the banging on the door had stopped, leaving them in a quiet bubble, alone and alive.

Gray looked behind him then nodded. "Try that box there. There might be some leftover matches too."

Trev gave the boy a look before standing. "Matches? What for?"

Gray didn't look up at her as he spoke. "We have to get out of here somehow. No one else knew I was here except Nick."

Trev nodded once, not letting her mind think about that right now. So she focused on getting Gray all patched up. Sure enough, she found a first aid box where he said they were as well as a flashlight, thermal blanket and a very expired bag of food. But she took it all with her to where Gray sat, placing everything on a table.

Kneeling down again, Trev glanced up at Gray before she got to work on his leg."Do you know your way around this place?"

Gray shrugged a shoulder. "Well enough."

"Do you know what caused all...this?" Trev gestured to the area around them then nodded to the metal door. "Or what happened to them?"

The young man let out a strained chuckle, wincing while she cleaned his wound. "How should I know? I was twelve when all Hell broke loose and the park closed down. That's probably what caused all," he gestured to the room like she did, "this."

"But you have been here for what, three years working on perfecting some kind of humanity gene in these creatures. You have to have some idea as to what's going on here."

Gray looked surprised. "You read my flies?"

Trev shook her head, smiling slightly as she looked up into his wide eyes. "Ah, yeah, no. Your brother wouldn't stop talking about it on the way here. After I got stuck on the helicopter with him, he insisted on telling me everything you were doing here." She turned back to his wound, nearly halfway down the gash. "He was very proud of you. I was nearly jealous. But how can I be when I know what it's like to care for someone that much?"

Gray leaned back, brushing his hair out of his face as he tried not to seeth against the pain in his leg. "Then you are a better person than me. If that wasn't evident already."

Trev's hands paused for a moment but then continued. "I had a feeling you didn't like me very much. Even before today."

"Not at first I didn't. I didn't care who he was seeing. He was girl crazy for the longest time and I thought you were going to come and go like all the other blonds he dated."

"I'm naturally brown if that helps."

Gray shrugged a shoulder. "You were different though. Despite you only being a couple years older than me, I could tell after you made it for longer than two weeks that you were going to stay. You already started to change him. After what happened here, we got close, real close. I never really had any friends because of how weird I was and as it turns out, no matter how smart you are it's near impossible to keep people around."

Trev smiled kindly, nodding as she moved to his knee making Gray hiss to which she gave him an apologetic smile.

The young man continued, his hands now covering his eyes as he spoke. "We had a bond that I thought would never break. He treated me differently, like a real brother. But he was still a jerk sometimes, especially to mom and dad once they ended up getting divorced after a year of trying to make things work. It clearly didn't help. So they split and the Old Nick would rear his face from time to time."

Gray looked down at Trev, her hands gentle as she moved to his calf, nearly finished. "Until you showed up. Suddenly it was New Nick everywhere, all the time. I didn't mind until I realized it was you who changed him and not me. I wanted to be the reason he wanted to be nice again, not some dino disaster. But it seems you beat me to it."

Trev shook her head slightly. "I didn't mean to butt into your life. I wasn't trying to replace you."

"Doesn't matter now." Gray let out a long breath, adjusting himself in his seat. "So while you two were in la la land, I escaped into my studies. After everything that happened here, I was surprisingly still quite interested in dinosaurs. I suddenly found myself in a deep hole of research that dated back to the first Jurassic Park with Dr. Hammond, Dr. Grant and Dr. Wu. Before long I had a solid theory and plan to test it out. I named it the "Gray Scale"."

Trev snorted. "Sound like a jar of paint at Lowes. Not only that but a bit conceded."

Gray rolled his eyes. "I needed something unique yet memorable."

"Says the guy named after the blandest color. Gray. Ew."

"Says the girl with a boy name. Trever."

Both of them laughed lightly as Trev swatted his good knee before getting back to his wound that was nearly done being treated and wrapped. "So how did you get here?"

"I stole a chopper. And yes I know full well how to fly it. But of course something had to go wrong and I crashed. Well, sort of. I landed with no way of being able to fly again. So I stayed. I had everything I needed with me. Started growing my own food. Got power up and running in the facilities I would need. Kept the dinosaurs away. Even had a girlfriend."

Trev stopped and looked up at Gray, her mouth agape. Gray laughed and nodded before growing sober. "She was the daughter of the man who owned the chopper. She called herself the Collateral. But when we crashed she didn't mind one bit and worked alongside me. If it weren't for her I would have gone crazing a long time ago."

Trev didn't dare speak but she was dying to know. "What happened to her?"

Gray looked at nothing in particular as he spoke, his eyes glazed over with memories. "She was going on a supply run to our farthest farm. I wanted to get rid of it months ago but she insisted that they had the best tomatoes. She gave me that look and smiled and I was a goner. I watched her drive off only to see one of the gentlest dinosaurs get spooked by the car and rush her. I ran to her as fast as I could but the stegosaurus was much bigger and in two strides she..." Gray took a shaky breath and looked down at his hands. "I happened a month ago."

Trev's heart stopped. She watched as Gray held back his emotions, his eyes glowing red as he bit his lip and messed with the broken fabric of his tattered shirt. No wonder he looked like crap already. He hadn't shaved in awhile. There were bags under his eyes and he had a particular smell about him. But Trev had attributed that to the whole 'mad scientist' stigma. Turns out he was hurting just as she was but for much longer.

Gently, Trev reached up and placed a hand on his good knee, her voice quiet. "What was her name?"

A corner of Gray's lips lifted as he looked into her dark eyes his own voice quiet but heavy with emotion. "Lily. She was the prettiest flower on the whole island."

Trev felt a tear slide down her cheek, her heart aching for the man who had to watch two of the most important people in his life disappear. Now she felt even worse for yelling at him. She reached up with her other hand and took one of his, squeezing it gently.

"I am so so sorry Gray."

Gray leaned forward and looked at their clasped hands in his lap, his other hand tracing the light scratches on Trev's hand. He thought back to Nick and how he would go on and on about his girl and how much in love he sounded. Gray knew how his brother felt, his own feelings for Lily slowly resurfacing as he let the idea of healing himself plant in his heart. He had to get Trev out of here safely, it's the least he could do for his brother. He shook his head slightly before looking at her.

"I'm a big boy Trev. I'll get through this." He squeezed her hand back. "We will get through this."

Trev nodded, a small smile appearing on her face. "Right. First things first, we have to make sure you can stand."

Gray gave her a look to which the woman's smile grew as she nodded. "Yes, you and I are getting out of here and for that to happen I have to make sure you can walk or if I need to make you a little dogsled to push you around in."

Gray chuckled lightly, reaching out with his other hand for her other one. "Let's see if this nursing program paid off."

Trev raised a brow and let out a breath. "I sure hope so."

The man stood, one hand in hers and his other arm slung around her shoulder. Once on his feet, Trev ducked from under his arm but stood close by in case he fell again. Gray hopped on his good leg then sucked in a breath before placing his injured leg down, his foot hitting the ground sending a jarring pain up his leg. But he kept quiet. Slowly he put pressure on it and with a groan, he stood there, unmoving but on both feet. He looked to Trev, expecting her to be happy but she looked exactly the opposite.

Feeling her hand tighten on his arm, he followed her horrified gaze. Gray watched as the metal door started to shake, making no noise at first. But that was soon remedied once something large sounding started to ram against it shaking the whole wall it was connected to, pieces of the ceiling coming down to add to the dusty air.

Gray shuffled his feet so he was standing in front of Trev, her hand still on his arm while her other hand came to rest on his shoulder. He felt her breath on his neck quicken as the door rattled more and more. Gray wasn't sure what to do. He didn't have his experiments with him or any weapon for that matter. He reached his hand back, touching Trav on the waist as the door dented in. Sweat chilled their bodies as they watched their last line of defense crumble under such awesome power of an unknown dinosaur.

Suddenly the banging stopped. There was a faint sound of clicking followed by a distant roar. The dino had created a nice sized dent that then created a whole were the edge of the door met the wall. A shadow stepped over it, causing the young adults to hold their breath. Gray stepped back once, pressing Trev closer to him. The shadow shifted again but this time there came a voice.

"Gray?"

Trev felt the man in front of her relax instantly, her hand moving from his shoulder to his waist as he nearly fell again. But the smile on his face made her instantly grateful for the mystery person.
"Gray?" They called again.

Gray cleared his throat smiling like a madman. "Yeah, yeah I'm here. I'm alright. I'm with Trev, Trevor Bentlee, Nick's girlfriend. Is that you Owen?"

There was a chuckle on the other side of the broken door. "Sure is buddy. In the flesh. Stay there. I'll have you out in-"

But his words were cut off by a loud roar that shook the whole building. Trev and Gray covered their ears, wincing against the call. Once it stopped there were similar roars but from various parts of the park. Gray stepped forward, Trev holding on to him still.

"Owen?"

But there was no answer. Trev looked to Gray who just stared at the door, his eyes wide with concern. Trev made sure Gray was safe to stand on his own before walking up to the door, peeking through to the other side.

The cost was clear. There was no one there. Not even Owen. She was about to turn to Gray when she saw movement. Squinting, Trev tried to make out who it was, calling out for the man Gray was clearly excited to see.

"Owen!? We are still here! Where are you?"

The figure down the all moved to the sound of her voice, slowly gaining speed. Once it got close enough for her to tell who or what it was, Trev let out a loud scream, scurrying back. Just as she drew clear of the whole a large talon stuck through, a dino scratching for its prey. Trev reached back for Gray, his hand finding hers as he pulled her back to him, the both of them pressed against a wall of towering boxes.

Trev turned to Gray her own fears unmasked and spilling over. "He's not there. What do we do?" Her voice was quiet and shaking.

Gray squeezed her hand and held her gaze. "I don't know yet, but we will think of something. Together."

Trev nodded. "Lily would be proud of you."

Gray gave her a tight smile. "Nick would be proud of you too."

The sound of screeching in the distance was closely followed by the whole building shaking of nearly thousands of dinosaurs called out and ran through the broken down park facility. Buildings shook, remaining glass broke, and shadows noisily passed by the hole in the door. Trev and Gray held onto each other for dear life, the memories of their loved ones and their newly bonded friendship keeping them going as they waited for a moment to escape.
