They didn't even find out that their father was shot directly from any family members until they met with Michael Grey in the hospital because they'd been talking with John on the phone every day since they were 8, and then Esme started answering and as much as she didn't like them, she knew better than hurt her husbands children in that way. Tommy didn't want to tell them because he didn't want to take the chance that John didn't make it and then having given them hope only to have it torn away. So the trio visited the one person who would give them a straight answer as soon as they could. Michael wasn't aware of the "don't tell john's children he's been shot" agreement, so he'd told them both himself and John had been shot by the Italian mafia. That's how the triplets, at 15, were brought into the family business, because they'd then refused to just sit quietly and wait so Tommy had to relent and let them in.

Kai did his best, without help from his parents who said it was his mistake and he had to take care of it. His twin did sometimes help but that was rare. When she was 4 it was revealed that she was like her father. A siphon. And that ostracised her further from her family outside of her father. She was outcast to a point where all she cared about was her father. She felt unwanted and unwelcome. So when most of her aunts and uncles were massacred by her father, she stood by and just let it happen as they'd never shown her anything besides distaste and spite. And then when Kai was imprisoned, she was placed there with him out of fear that she would finish what Kai started. She was only 12 but the lack of anything positive from her family had an effect on her, and she became a lot like her father. She does very likely have Asocial Personality disorder, thus making her likely a Sociopath. However she had a brief relationship with a young Dean Winchester, where she encouraged him to run away from John and live with her and bring Sam with them, but it didn't work. And then only a few months later, she was trapped in the prison world.
