Jack Wilder ~ Card Tricks

Been a while since I've written for Jack. It's also been a while since I've written anything lmao.

Female reader.

Ah, the nice busy streets of downtown. Filled with the typical busybody hurrying from place to place, street magicians, the occasional cafe setup, street magicians, street musicians...oh, did I mention the street magicians?

Those guys were everywhere, I swear. Can't walk by without having them call out to people walking by. I can't tell you how many times I've been specifically called out while I was passing. I barely glanced up at the cons that called me out, pursing my lips and forging ahead in my path.

But no matter how many times I seemed to try and walk past these magicians, there was always this street corner near my apartment where one magician always performed his tricks. It was always the same guy, somehow managing to find new tricks every day since a few weeks after I moved in. Which just so happened to be about a WHOLE  TWO FRICKIN' YEARS AGO.

How the hell-

You know what? There's so many weird tricks out there. I'm not gonna question it.

So this magician. Not going to lie, he's actually attractive. He's cute. His hair looks like the softest thing I could run my fingers through. His eyes are such a soft brown, no wonder he always seems to gather such a big crowd every time I see him performing. Well, maybe that and the fact that he's handsome as heck. No doubt his eyes are what bring home a girl every so often. If not that, then it's his smirk. That beautiful smirk, taunting me to come closer and watch just one of his shows.

I ignored the smirk, of course, always sparing him a glance and nothing more. And I don't know how in the world he did it, but he always managed to catch my glance. Every. Single. Time.

HOW IN THE WORLD-

Ya know what? I'm not gonna answer that either.

He always seemed to be wearing the same leather jacket every time I saw him, no matter how cold or hot it was outside. You'd think he'd be sweating up a storm when it was at least 80 degrees out, and you'd think he'd be shivering to the point where he'd be vibrating when it was below freezing. But nooooo, he didn't seem fazed by the weather changes.

"Hey, you there!" a familiar voice called out.

I looked up in the direction of the voice, seeing that I had reached the corner near my apartment. And therefore I reached that magician.

"Come on, dude, I just finished my classes for the day. I just want to get home and binge watch Supernatural." I sighed as I headed over, my hands in my pockets. "College can be a bitch. Bet it must be nice performing magic tricks for everyone instead of sitting in a class taking notes."

When I finally reached him, he loosely draped an arm around my shoulders. And I hate to admit, it felt nice. I was itching to inch closer and lean against him, to lean into his warmth. I wasn't cold, it just felt pleasant.

"Damn, he's even cuter up close." I muttered to myself.

I met his gaze and he seemed to be smirking at me. I couldn't tell if that was just a thing he normally did or he heard what I said to myself. A deck of cards rested in his other hand.

"What's your name, sweetheart?" he asked me.

"Don't know why I'd trust a stranger with my name, but it's (Y/N)." I replied with a laugh.

"I like to think we're not strangers, at the rate we see each other during the week." he whispered.

I scoffed. "We'll see about that. Hurry up with your trick, though."

"Nice to meet you, (Y/N), I'm Jack." he quickly added, nodding before he turned to the crowd.

"(Y/N) here has so graciously offered her help for this next trick. Now, everyone's seen these kinds of tricks. It's the simple, 'Is this your card?' type of trick. You all know how those end. But I'm going to try and read this girl's mind," he confidently stated, his arm moving from around my shoulders to rest protectively on my waist. "And try to see if she can fool me. It's simple, really."

"Is it now?" I teased, a small smile on my face. "And it was more like, I was summoned to 'graciously offer my help for this next trick.'" I retorted with a smirk.

He winked at me and faced the crowd again. "So this is easy. I'll show (Y/N) a card, she'll remember what it is, but then she'll have to think of another card to fool me. I'll try and see if I can figure out what her actual card is."

He turned to me, shuffling his cards, his hands moving the cards swiftly around while making small talk with the audience and me. I nodded along and answered his questions, wondering how long it'd take to shuffle the cards. There's only 52 cards anyway. He must have been distracted though, because a card fell out of his deck and he didn't seem to notice. I casually looked around at the crowd. They didn't seem to notice either.

The little Loki on my shoulder snickered. I could even hear him clearly: "You thinkin' what I'm thinkin'?"

Hell yeah, little Loki.

I bent down to tie my shoe, discreetly flipping up the corner of the card. It was a seven of spades. I quickly shoved it up my sleeve and untied and retied my shoe, trying to keep my movements as fluid as possible.

When I finished, I stood up again, Jack still making small talk with the crowd as he shuffled and played with the cards, flicking them back and forth from hand to hand.

"Ready, (Y/N)?"

I nodded. He smiled and fanned out the cards. "Pick a card, any card. Take it out and memorize it, and think of a different card to throw me off."

I picked out a random card, then stuck it back in the deck and watched as he shuffled the cards again.

"Now, think of that different card. And if I'm not mistaken," he slowly started, his tongue sticking out in concentration as he picked a card out from the deck and held it up for everyone to see. "Is the four of clubs your card?"

I pretended to peer at the card, holding back my smile as I shook my head after a moment.

"No, but this is." I replied, a smug smile on my face as I slipped the card out of my sleeve and held it up for everyone to see. "The seven of spades."

Jack looked genuinely shocked while the audience absolutely lost it. A sharpie was waved in my face for whatever reason, but I didn't question it and grabbed it, scrawling out things on the card I held. Knowing I wouldn't find the owner of the sharpie, I pocketed it and looked up at Jack.

He seemed to recover from his bout of shock, but his eyes still held a curious twinkle in them, wondering who this random (Y/N) was and how she managed to con him at his own trick.

"Maybe we'll see each other another time." I grinned at him, shaking his hand.

I went off towards my apartment, the smile still on my face.

"Good job today, little Loki. Good job indeed." I said to myself. Little Loki chuckled his agreement. "I'm not even a magician; that was just pure luck."

I had just reached the steps to my apartment building door when an arm grabbed me and stopped me from moving.

"Hey, (Y/N)." a voice I had grown accustomed to hear called me. The hand on my arm let go of me as I turned around and saw Jack sheepishly standing there, a pink blush on his face. I raised my eyebrow at him, waiting for him to speak as he opened and closed his mouth wordlessly, fumbling for the right words to say.

A moment of silence passed between us before Jack finally found the words to speak.

"So how did you do it? With that card trick and all." he wondered. "I mean, it'd be nice to be partners, out on the streets, you know?  Er, I was wondering..." he trailed when he noticed my smile grow bigger.

"You really want to know?"

He nodded eagerly, like a little boy waiting to receive his Christmas gifts.

"All right, then. I'll let you in on my secret." I told him leaning closer to whisper in his ear.

"Magicians never reveal their secrets." I purred.

I leaned back again and trotted up the stairs, unlocking the door and looking back at him with a wink.

"See you 'round, Jack." I said before walking through the door, hearing it shut behind me.

I would definitely see more of him now. I thought as I climbed up the stairs to my apartment.

Just as I reached my room, I felt my phone vibrate with a text message. I pulled it out of my pocket and saw an unknown number had texted me, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips as I read the text.

It's Jack
