Enjolras ~ Protector (Part 2)

I had been living with Madame Houcheloup for a few weeks now, doing as she told me to stay on her good side. I went exploring around town, never going as far as past the marketplace. I made friends with a lot of the vendors and street workers there, as well as some small boys that needed food. But today, I had a burst of courage--or was it stuipidity?--and decided to venture down another way that I had never taken before, curious to see what was at the end of the path.

So out I ventured for the day, bidding Madame a goodbye and walking out of the café. But instead of turning my usual way down the street, I went the opposite way. I shivered a little, whether it was from the slightly cooler temperature of if it was my brain telling me to turn around; I couldn't tell. The sunlight never wavered, staying just as bright as it usually did in the market. It was probably just my overactive imagination making me think I was going to get ambushed anyway.

I was still astounded at all the sights I was seeing though; everything was so new and different to what I was used to. My head turned in every direction, taking all the sights I could. And alas, I was so absorbed in exploring that I didn't watch where I was going and bumped into someone.

Or rather, we bumped into each other.

The man reeked of alcohol and he stumbled around, much like how Madame Houcheloup described me when she first saw me. I would have moved out of the way, if it weren't for me looking everywhere around me but in front of me.

"Oi, lookee what we've got here." he slurred, making me grimace and back away.

"I'm only here for a walk, so it would be really great if you could just back off, thank you very much." I replied firmly.

"Aww, don't be like that. Come on, how about I take you back to my place and--"

"You heard the woman, back off." another voice cut the drunkard off.

I turned my head in the direction of the voice, and couldn't believe my eyes.

Enjolras?!

Of all people, it had to be him. Gotta admit, I wasn't exactly disappointed. I was slightly ecstatic to be honest.

"This doesn't concern you, boy! Scram!"

Enjolras sighed and made his way over to us as I stepped off to the side to get ready to sprint away if necessary, looking the drunkard in the eye before landing a solid punch on his opponent's face. The drunkard went down with a loud "THUD" and Enjolras turned to me with a half smile, looking slightly concerned.

"He didn't do anything to you, did he?" he asked.

I shook my head. "Fortunately, no. Thanks for helping me." I replied. "I owe you one."

"Don't worry about it, honestly." He beamed at me before turning back the way he came, brushing the dust off of him.

I remembered a small detail Madame Houcheloup mentioned about Enjolras maybe letting me join his meetings. I wondered....would he make an exception this once? Probably not, but it was still worth a shot.

"Hey! Wait!" I called after him after a moment of split-second decision making. He stopped and turned around, waiting for me to catch up to him.

Once I did, I hurriedly asked the question I planned to. "I know you don't normally accept women into your meetings, but could you make an exception just this once?"

Enjolras's face morphed from a mildly content expression to a stone-cold one. He shook his head at me.

"Sorry, my rules are rules." he explained, and off he went again, at a quicker pace this time.

I huffed. Fine. If he was going to be like that, I might as well find a way to sneak in. Houcheloup couldn't do anything about it except for supplying me some special things needed to carry out my plan.

That night, I hurriedly changed into the trousers and shirt that Madame had given me, and tucked a classic cabbie hat on my head. If I angled it just right, I would look like I was a boy with slightly longer hair.

Yeah, it seems pretty cliche for this to happen, but I want to know what they're doing behind those closed doors. I want to get in on some of this revolting. Simply put, I want to be in the room where it happens.

I edged my way into the room that night, going unnoticed by everyone. I sat in the corner and listened in, laughing at the petty arguments happening around the room as the meeting went on. And soon enough, my eyes found the leader, the red-jacketed man sighing tiredly.

I wanted to comfort him, but I reminded myself that I was here strictly on business. He was exasperatedly shaking his head at his friends, pinching the bridge of his nose. The meeting was soon to be over and I needed to make my escape back to my room. I quickly and quietly got up from my chair and tried edging my way out of the room, but a hand grabbed my wrist and stopped my movement.

"Hey, hey, hey, you haven't introduced yourself yet." Enjolras's voice said softly.

I mentally facepalmed. It had to be him. Why not someone else? Or better yet, why not NO ONE AT ALL?

"Uh, I'm Gabriel." I quickly replied, mentally cursing at myself for not thinking of a better name.

"Well, Gabriel, would you mind if we stepped outside for a bit?"

What could he possibly want with me?

"Uhm....sure?" I said somewhat uncertainly.

I followed him out the door and onto the cobblestone street right outside the cafe. I stayed behind him, keeping my eyes on his back. He didn't say a word as soon as we got out. I warily watched him, wondering if he was actually going to say anything or if he was just too awkward to figure out what to say.

I opened my mouth to break the silence, but Enjolras beat me to it.

"You're not really 'Gabriel', are you, (Y/N)?" he asked me, turning around.

I studied his face, noting the lack of facial expression. It didn't seem much help to lie about it anyway, so I sighed and nodded.

"I told you women weren't allowed at meetings." he said sternly.

"And why exactly?" I snapped back at him. "You haven't exactly said why yet!"

Enjolras frowned and opened his mouth to answer, but his gaze fixed on something behind me as his eyes widened and he pulled me to the side. His arms wrapped protectively around me from whatever the heck the threat was, and he turned his body so that his back faced the threat.

A moment later, I heard a gunshot and shouts. My eyes closed tightly of their own accord, and I buried my face in Enjolras's chest.

A moment later, Enjolras tapped me on my back and gently said, "They're gone now, (Y/N)."

I--reluctantly--pulled away from his embrace and I gratefully nodded at him. "Thank you."

I turned away and began walking back into the building, and back towards my room. I was wondering if Enjolras would follow me back in to pick up the stuff he left behind or if he'd just stand out here and contemplate life when he called out and stopped me.

"(Y/N)!"

I slowly turned around and met his eyes.

"There's a rally tomorrow morning, if you didn't hear." he said quickly. "I don't know when you snuck in, but just in case--"

"I'll be there." I told him with a smile. "Goodnight, Enjolras. See you tomorrow."

I heard a quiet "Goodnight, (Y/N)." in response, and something muttered after but I couldn't quite place it.

And I turned back towards the welcoming light in the building and made my way to my room. Madame Houcheloup nodded at me and bid me goodnight as I waltzed past.

Tomorrow would be an interesting day, to say the least. I hoped my wings wouldn't get involved. They hadn't given me any trouble during my time here so far, anyway.

~~~
So far, the rally had been a success. I leaned against the platform, arms crossed across my chest. Enjolras found my gaze once; I winked at him causing him to stumble on his words for a second. Like I said, the rally was pretty successful so far.
Until the boots of soldiers were heard, that is.
My head snapped up in the direction of the sound, quickly leaping up onto the stage and nudging Enjolras.
"I'm sure you've heard those boots by now, so why don't we end this for now, and meet up at the Musain?"
Enjolras frowned and nodded, ending the rally and making his way towards our planned exit. I followed him, but heard a small cry. I stopped in my tracks and looked around. What was that?
There will be a part 3!
Bit of a lame ending but the action will pick up in the third part.
