"What was I supposed to do, let the mortal die?" I screamed at the Elders. "He was going to get shot!"

The Elders shook their head disapprovingly. "I am afraid it is against the law to interfere with mortal affairs, especially if it meant causing a large catastrophe such as the one you made! It is a crime punishable by banishment!"

"I am begging you, Elders! The mortal was about to get killed. KILLED! He had a gun held at his head at point blank range and you just sit idly by, letting death happen as if there were more mortals to take their place! Me setting the wagon on fire and pushing it towards town was necessary in keeping him alive!"

I froze, quickly covering my mouth. Crap.

"Oh, so is that how you feel?" the middle Elder drawled, a scheming smirk on his old, wrinkly face. "I'll have you know, they have wonderful lives down in the afterlife. Besides, why do you care so much? You're not a part of the Guardian Angel Division anyway."

"I may not be a part of the G.A.D., but isn't it every angel's job to look out for others and direct them towards the good? You were an angel once, O Elder. You started at the bottom once! You started as scum from the bottom, just like the rest of us and you've made your way to the top! Isn't it about time you changed the old laws anyway?"

"Did you call me 'scum' ?" the middle Elder asked me, leaning forward.

"No, that's not--" I began, but was drowned out by the angels whispering in the room and cut off the the three Elders.

"SILENCE!" they boomed, silencing the small chatter about my comment. Then the middle one looked at me, his conniving grin still on his face. Oh, if I could just smack it off--

"Well if you feel so strongly towards them, perhaps you should spend your time there." he said, deathly calm. My eyes widened.

"What?!"

"You heard what I said, (Y/N)." he replied. "You should spend your time there. I mean, you're rarely ever seen around the angel realm anyway, so what's the difference? Besides, you're getting too big-mouthed. Maybe some banishment for a time could fix you right up."

I shook my head. "No, Elder. With all due respect, I think you should consider my words and maybe keep a flexible mind in the law."

He scowled at me, peering at me through his beady eyes. "I am sorry, but we remain firm in our decision."

"All not in favor of banishment, you have 10 seconds to speak up now."

10...

Come on, come on!

9...

Somebody?

8...

Anybody?

7...

Stupid angel laws.

6...

If I ever get to the top, I'm going to do something about those laws.

5...

Somebody speak up!

4...

Please!

3...

Anyone!

2...

Help!

1...

Dammit.

I sighed in defeat as the ten seconds passed by without anyone saying anything. The middle Elder looked me in the eye and smugly grinned.

"All in favor of banishment?"

"Aye!" everyone else chimed.

"You, (Y/N), are hereby declared a Fallen Angel."

I hung my head dejectedly as I felt the Elders' power stripping me of my angelic properties, turning me into a mortal and casting me down to Earth. I was in for one hell of a ride.

~~~
I woke up in a rickety bed, blinking the unconscious out of my eyes as I took in my surroundings. I was in a small room, the dresser at the foot of my bed and a mirror standing at the wall opposite the bed. There was a window by the head of the bed; the shouts of children and the marching of boots could be heard.
The bed itself was a little uncomfortable, incomparable to my plush bed back in the angel realm. The sheets were scratchy, and I could feel a few springs in the mattress poking into my back (and yet I made no move to get off the bed). The blanket was warm, which was nice, but it wasn't as soft as compared to mine. Gosh, I have to stop comparing things to my life in the angel realm. This would be my home from now on, I would have to get used to it.
I sighed forlornly, looking out the window. I could not have been sent down to the mortal world in a worse time. I was sent right in the middle of the student rebellions, how was I supposed to stay out of it?! Danger always finds me for some reason, so I was pretty sure something bad was going to happen if I was around. Maybe if I stayed in here long enough....
....Yeah, that wasn't going to work. I begrudgingly got up and made myself look as presentable as possible, glad that the Elders didn't take wings when they banished angels and that their powers extended to giving you the proper clothing of the time.
I made my way out of the room and down the stairs of what seemed to be a cafe. At the bottom, a kind-looking lady smiled at me and warmly asked me how I felt.
"Uhm, how did I get here first of all?" I responded, putting her question aside.
"Rather gracefully, if I may say. You seemed in a stupor, stumbling around as if you were drunk. Why, if I hadn't looked closely I would've thought you were Grantaire!"
"Who?"
The woman chuckled. "Never mind him, let's get you something to eat, oui? Although, you may be able to meet him later if he so permits."
I nodded with a grateful smile, putting aside whoever this Grantaire was and if this woman was referring to him when she said "he" or if she was referring to someone else. "I'm so sorry to have dropped in so unexpectedly like this."
"It's no problem, dear. As long as you clean up after yourself and keep your room nice and tidy so it's easier for me to clean, you'll be fine."
She handed me a small slice of bread, which was enough for now. "I'm sorry for the small portion, my dear. Life here has been tough. It'll take a miracle to get France back up on its feet."
I hummed in response, finishing the slice of bread sooner than I would have liked. The sound of the door opening and closing and footsteps making their way towards us made me turn my head slightly to see who had come in.
He had a mop of curly, dirty blond hair, which looked like organized chaos if you asked me. He had a very bright red jacket adorned with a cockade hanging off his arm, some papers in the other. His cravat was untied, as if he had woken up and threw his clothes on quickly without properly putting them on. Judging by the way he moved, he probably did do that. His eyes flickered with exhaustion and determination, and if I wasn't mistaken, it looked like he was ready to smite the next person who got on his bad side.
"Enjolras!" the woman greeted him cheerfully.
"Madame Houcheloup." the man--Enjolras, I corrected myself--replied with a soft smile. "I'll have my usual coffee, thank you."
She grinned back and patted him on his shoulder, whispering something into his ear. His eyes widened and he glanced over at me for a split second before looking back at the woman--Madame Houcheloup, that was her name--and shaking his head, his eyes slightly irritated.
She frowned and shook her head. "Incroyable! Just give them a chance."
I eyed the Enjolras as the woman made her way towards me, telling me that she had to establish some ground rules if I were to stay there for a while. I nodded and listened to her as she began speaking, keeping Enjolras in the corner of my eye.
He seemed like an interesting character, no doubt. Passionate about stuff obviously. He seemed like he could use a break from stuff, too. I wondered if I would see him more after this.
And a little part in me told me that I would.
Okay, part one is moving a little slowly, that's my fault. There's probably gonna be two or three parts to this so stay tuned for the next two or so parts!
