Karkat X Reader; New City, New Hopes
Your P.O.V
I walked down the city streets, cars whizzing by and a breeze pushing my hair back. My backpack was resting on my shoulders, and my suitcase hung from my hand.
Today was the big day. The day I moved into New York.
I looked around with bright eyes, seeing the busy city at it's finest. Cute little shops decorated each corner, and there were many appealing products stored finely inside.
I smiled, seeing so many different interesting things. I looked at the people walking by. There were many different kinds of people shuffling through the busy streets. It made me feel as though there would be no possible way to not fit in. It was comforting.
While scanning up and down the streets, I saw something that caught my eye. A crowd was forming at the end of the street.
I curiously began to make my way over, hearing shouts and grunts. My eyebrows furrowed and I managed to get the the inner ring of the circle.
There stood two males, one with tan caramel skin, valley green eyes and chocolate hair. His lip was busted and he looked like he was ready to rip someone's head off.
I looked at the other figure, but to my shock my eyes met with a troll. His cheek was bruised and he had a bit of candy red blood dripping from his nose. My eyebrows furrowed even more, a sad frown painting my face.
"What did I tell you, scum? You don't belong in a place like this." The brown haired boy growled.
"HEY!" I yelled pushing my way in front of the troll.
"What the hell is your problem? What has he done to you to deserve to be treated like this?" I snarled.
"Look at him. He's a freak. Freaks don't belong in places like this." I felt my eye twitch as his words rung through my head.
"What did you just say? I dare you to say it again." I said, my voice deep an threatening.
He scoffed and said "I said, he's a-. Before he could finish a sentence, my uppercut cut him off. "Stop discriminating people, you honestly make me sick. What if he was your family, your friend, would you treat him this way? I'd better than hope not. Nobody deserves this, sure, he's a different species, that has nothing to do with this. He's done nothing wrong. He can't change who he is, and he doesn't need to."
I linked my arm with the now shocked troll, beginning to walk to the little coffee shop across the street.
He looked at me with an awestruck expression, absolutely dumbfounded.
"WHAT THE EVERLOVING SHIT WAS THAT ABOUT?" He asked, shifting slightly. I shook my head and sighed. "Let me buy you a drink." I said while leading him into the shop. The crowd behind us began to disperse, seemingly shocked by my actions as well.
I heard the shouts of the male behind me, which I completely ignored. "So, are you visiting?" I asked the troll beside me. He negatively shook his head and replied "NO, I'VE LIVED HERE FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW. I CAME HERE TO GO TO COLLEGE." He muttered the last part.
"Do you know that man from before?" I asked curiously. "NO." He sighed. "WHY DID YOU HELP ME ANYWAYS?" He questioned.
"I really don't like to see people get hurt, and what he said was not okay. I couldn't stand to just watch. I'm sorry." A light red colour appeared on his cheeks. "WELL, THANK YOU.. YOU'RE THE FIRST F##CKER TO ACTUALLY HELP ME OUT."
I sighed at this, and we sat at a table near the window. "I'm sorry to hear that." I leaned over with my napkin and wiped the blood off of his nose. He grabbed my hand softly and ran his thumb over my knuckles.
His eyes were a little distant, and his hands were warm. The waiter suddenly approached our table and spoke; "Hey guys. Welcome to the lights cafe, what can I get this fine couple today?"
"W-we're not a-" my face erupted in a scarlet blush while I pulled my hand away from Karkat. "WE'LL TAKE A SUNDAY FOR TWO." Karkat spoke while looking directly into my eyes.
I bit my lip and nodded. This earned a laugh from the waiter. "You guys are cute. Better keep 'er cuz in a town like this, lots of people have their eyes on the prize." The waiter winked at me and Karkat huffed in sheer annoyance.
The waiter then disappeared to go collect our food.
"I, I didn't ever catch your name?" I spoke up. "MY NAME IS KARKAT, BUT YOU CAN CALL ME KK." He said casually. "My name is (Y/N). I just got here, I'm renting an apartment for the first time. You can call me (N/N)." I said with a smile.
He blushed and looked out the window, meanwhile the waiter returned with our ice cream.
"Thank you." I said while grabbing a spoon. I began to eat my ice cream, looking at the boy across from me.
It didn't strike me until now, how attractive he is.
He had pointed ears, with tired golden eyes and a soft looking head of black hair. His skin was grey, giving him a defining look. Candy corn-like horns protruded from his hair, and his black sweater had the astrological cancer symbol on it.
I blushed at the thought, and he suddenly got up and walked to my side of the booth. I gave him a confused look until he lightly pushed me over and sat beside me. He then leaned into my ear and whispered; "I DON'T LIKE THE WAY THAT ATTENDANT KEEPS LOOKING AT YOU." I raised a brow and leaned so that I could see the man.
He had a dark smirk plastered on his face and I shuddered. "I'LL WALK YOU HOME AFTER THIS." Karkat said, insuring the other male couldn't hear him while breaking me out of my thoughts.
I sighed in relief "Thanks Karkat, you don't know how much this means." I say with a faint smile. "I honestly don't know what the man's problem from before was, you seem like such a sweet guy." I said looking up at him.
Another light dusting of red costed his cheeks and he muttered "IT'S THE LEAST I COULD DO FOR SOMEONE WHO SAVED MY ASS." I giggled and patted his arm. His eyes brightened up and the corners of his mouth twitched upwards in an amused smile.
"You should smile more, it's attractive." I blurted before I could bite my tongue. My hands flew over my mouth, but it was too late. A large blush covered my cheeks and I looked at Karkat.
"Uhhhhh.... so ice cream." I say quickly, stuffing a spoonful into my mouth.
A happy chuckle resonated from beside me, and my heart pounded in response.
It only about seven minutes between chatting and eating for all of our ice cream to be gone. We walked up to the till where the attendant remained and before I could pay Karkat nudged me aside and put a ten dollar bill on the counter.
"KEEP THE CHANGE." He said staring down the other man. He then took my hand in his, and began walking for the door. I followed him with a grin plastered across my face. His strides were casual, but then he stopped abruptly. "What's wrong?" I asked.
"I DON'T KNOW THE WAY TO YOUR APARTMENT." He said while scratching the back of his neck.
I giggled and pulled out my phone, popping in the destination point, and then leading myself and Karkat to my apartment. "I GUESS YOU WOULDN'T REALLY KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND YET, HUH?" He asked.
I nodded. "Yeah, today is my first day as a resident of New York."
"I'LL HAVE TO GIVE YOU A GRAND TOUR THEN." He responded. I smiled and replied eagerly; "That sounds awesome!"
He nodded and after a few more minutes in comfortable silence, we made it to my apartment.
We walked to the front desk, I collected my room key, and then we were in the elevator on the way to floor 5.
The elevator "dinged" and we stepped out, walking down to room 504. I successfully opened the door, being greeted by my mediocrely sized apartment. It was decently furnished, it had a couch, tv, kitchen set, bed, bathroom and a few closets. It's all I really needed.
"I'm sorry for not having properly unpacked yet." I said sheepishly.
"IT'S FINE." He said with a nod. "NEED HELP UNPACKING?"
"It's fine, Karkat. You've done a lot." I said. He didn't seem to take this response, because he walked in and opened a box. "You don't have to, really." I said.
Again, he ignored me and sifted through the items.
A smile graced my face and I walked over to join him.
It was much later once we finally finished unpacking. In fact, it was around 6pm. I flopped onto the couch beside Karkat. "PHEW, thank god that's done. Thanks a bunch, I probably wouldn't even be done tomorrow if you hadn't helped." He nodded and put his head on my shoulder.
"NO PROBLEM. WANT TO ORDER TAKEOUT?"
We ended up getting Chinese food and watching movies until I fell asleep in his arms. Needless to say, it'd been a very busy day.
Moving to New York was the best idea I've ever had.
