Snake in the Grass || COD
König x Female!Reader
••You're stranded in enemy territory and have to cross an open field. Your only hope of escape is to allow the nearby enemy forces to pass and then move, but one soldier in particular makes that far more difficult.
You laid perfectly still in the tall, sun-scorched grass, drawing in shallow breaths to avoid making the slightest movement. Your ghillie suit had come in handy thus far, allowing you to hide in plain sight while enemies roamed on all sides.
The border you needed to cross to make it to safety was just beyond the hill that was more than a dozen yards from your current position. As tantalizingly close as it was, you couldn't risk making a move. You were still waiting on an enemy patrol to pass, and the distant rumble of vehicles told you they were growing near.
So you laid still, baking in the hot sun and anxiously waiting, hands gripping your rifle.
Slowly, you were able to hear voices. Soldiers chatting amongst themselves. Their boots crunched the grass beneath them, giving you somewhat of an idea of how far away they were.
Eventually, they came close enough for you to see them. You held your breath as they passed by mere feet from you, blissfully unaware of your presence. There were about seven of them in total, plus a vehicle that most likely held three more. They moved painfully slow, but didn't seem to be looking at their surroundings too closely.
Keep moving...
Eventually, the voices began to fade and the rumble of the vehicle was nothing but distant white noise. Even after the group had passed, you remained still for a few more seconds just to be safe.
Thank god you did.
"Be careful, meine Kameraden." A voice called, sounding much closer than the soldiers who had just walked by. "There may be a snake hiding in these grasses, and you don't want to get bitten."
You frowned, wondering why he'd be worried about snakes, of all things. However, upon further examination of his tone, you realized it was one of taunting and arrogance—not worry.
Meaning that warning was for you.
Whether he truly knew you were there or was just bluffing, you didn't know—and you weren't about to take any chances.
You didn't move. You didn't risk a peek to see where he was. Your heart began to pound against your chest and your palms became sweaty. Every instinct you possessed was screaming at you to get up and run, take the chance, but you couldn't do it. Your body physically wouldn't move. You were paralyzed.
Grass rustled to your right, very nearly making you flinch. You struggled to control your breathing as you strained to listen. Where was he?
Something big was moving through the grass, stalking its prey like a tiger. You were the fawn helplessly laying in the grass, praying your camouflage would be enough to save your life. Your pulse pounded in your ears as you squeezed your eyes shut, silently begging any higher power that was listening to let him pass you by.
However, as you felt the barrel of a gun press against the back of your skull, your hopes were dashed.
"Found you, little rabbit..."
