The Conversations of Mordred and Emrys
If I owned Merlin, Modred would not have gone to Morgana's side and the story would have a happy ending.
--Mystery
'Emrys. You're being paged,' Modred thought to Emrys, as the prince called down the halls for his manservant.
'Kind of in the middle of making sure his pratinesss doesn't get assassinated. Stall for me?' Merlin thought back.
'Hmmm, let me think... Ok I've thought, and the answer is.... You'll have to bribe me.'
'What if I give you cookies the next time, I see you?'
'That'll do.'
"--dred! MODRED!!" Modred snapped out of his daze that he fell in while telepathically speaking to Merlin.
"Yes, Your Highness?" Modred asked
"Do you no where my excuse of a manservant is?"
"No sir, but I think I heard him say something about Gaius wanting him to get more herbs today."
'Emrys!! Emrys!! Get up!! Get up!!' Modred mind shouted, while jumping on Merlin's bed.
'Modred I'm sleeping,' Merlin replied.
'I don't care. I don't feel like going to training alone.'
'Fine I'm getting up but watch your back.' With the confirmation that Merlin was getting up, Modred went down the stairs and started talking to Gaius.
5 minutes later Merlin came running down the stairs and started chasing Modred out the door. Only throwing a quick 'hi' over his shoulder at Gaius.
'You woke me up. You better watch out when I catch you nothing will save you from the worst torture there is,' Merlin told Modred
'No Emrys not tickles,' Modred pleaded bursting in a fit of giggles.
'Yes tickles.'
'Emrys no. No tickles.'
'You woke me up I deserve revenge,' Merlin said. Modred stopped short not bothering to reply once he realized where they were.
The warlock and druid were on the training fields. Modred was still laughing right before he stopped, and Merlin was still fuming about being woken up so as soon as Modred stopped Merlin snuck up behind him and tickled him. Modred burst out into a uncontrollable fit of giggles and laughter.
The Knights of the Round Table were standing on the training field. Author was there and the only knight they were waiting for was Modred. The knights heard giggles right before Modred burst onto the training grounds. A fuming Merlin not far behind.
Modred for his part seemed to realize where they were and stopped but Merlin kept going towards the young man. Merlin placed a finger on his lips in the direction of the knights before tackling Modred to the ground and tickling him relentlessly.
'Emrys, stop I yield,' Modred said.
"Beg," Merlin said aloud
'Emrys stop I'm sorry. I promise I'm sorry. It was cruel of me to wake you up before you wanted to be awake. Especially if you were up all-night saving Author. Please stop,' Mordred begged.
Merlin stopped tickling the druid with a smile on his face, pleased with the boys answer. The knights for their part just stared. Modred had said nothing, yet Merlin had stopped the relentless tickle attack.
The weird expressions Modred and Merlin would make at each other without saying a word to the other or the random bursts of laughter from the two became commonplace in the castle. It wasn't until one fateful hunting trip that the Knights of the Round Table learned anything about it.
'Emrys.' 'Emrys.' 'My lord.' 'Emrys.' Emrys.' Merlin heard.
'Modred stop calling my name.' The warlock told Modred
'I'm not doing it.' Modred defended.
'Then who is?'
'I think we are near a druid encampment.'
'That makes sense. Not even you can call my name that many times in the space of 2 seconds.'
'Hey!'
"—dred! Modred!!" Modred heard pulling him out of his daze at the same time Merlin pulled out of his from hearing Gwaine call his name.
"What is it with you and Merlin always dazing out on us?" Arthur asked.
"What do you mean prat?" Merlin shot back.
"I could have you thrown in the stocks for calling me that, idiot."
"Simpleton."
"Clotpole."
"Hey that's my word."
"I'll give it back to you if you tell me why you and Modred are always dazing out on us."
"Cause y'all are boring." Modred let out a snicker at Merlin's words but said nothing to counteract them.
"Modred, would you care to explain?" Arthur asked turning to Modred
"Not really your highness." Concluding that he wouldn't get an answer from either Merlin or Modred, Arthur turned a sat back down next to the fire.
"Real reason please," Lancelot said once the rest of the knights had turned back to the fire.
"He's a druid, I'm Emrys. We can talk to each other telepathically," Merlin told the knight.
'Maybe we should prank the rest of the knights,' Modred suggested to Merlin.
'How would we do that?' Merlin asked.
'Anytime we are near them we start talking to each other telepathically.'
'Sounds fun. Let's do it.'
Gwaine rounded a corner a few weeks after the hunting trip to see Merlin and Modred, moving their hands in an exaggerated manner but their mouths weren't moving. Gwaine thought it might have something to do with what the knights had tried to confront the two about during the hunting trip, because ever since the hunting trip whenever a Knight of the Round Table was nearby. Mordred and Merlin would start waving their hands and seeming to talk but never talking.
The duo wouldn't do it to Lancelot, just every other knight that came their way.
The next time the weird behavior of the two was brought up during a Round Table meeting. Mordred and Merlin both had the dazed look in their eyes, so all the knights knew they weren't paying attention to Arthur or them.
"My manservant just stops talking when Mordred is nearby. Whenever the two are together they never seem to be talking yet are somehow communicating," Arthur said.
"I've turned corners and the two are just standing their waving their hands at each other without saying a thing. It's unnerving," Gwaine told Arthur.
The other knights gave their accounts of times they had turned corners just to see the two people waving their hands at each other or pulling weird facial expressions without a word being spoken between the two. By the end Lancelot, Modred, and Merlin were the only three people to not have said anything.
CRASH!! BANG!!! BOOM!!
The doors of the meeting hall were thrown open. All of the room's occupants made to rise but found themselves stuck to their chairs. All except Modred, Merlin, and Lancelot.
Lancelot pulled his sword out of its scabbard while Merlin and Modred did the weird talking but not talking thing they do, except this time they seemed to be doing it with the new arrivals. From the expressions on the two protectors face's the conversation wasn't going to well.
One of the new arrivals seemingly angered by what was said lunged at Modred with a spell on the tip of his tongue. The spell never left the sorcerer's mouth before he fell unconscious in the middle of the meeting hall. Some quick lookers caught the brief flash of gold in Merlin's eyes, but the color had disappeared just as quickly as it appeared.
One by one the attacking sorcerers fell unconscious every time they made a move to attack one of the occupants of the room. Only brief glances were caught by each of the knights when they looked at one of the men. Gwaine, Arthur, and Percival all claimed to have seen Mordred's eyes turn gold at one point, while Elyan and Gwen claimed Merlin's eyes turned gold at one point before fading back to their usual cheerful blue.
"Modred the other day, when you and Merlin were facing those sorcerers your eyes, they turned gold is their something you aren't telling me?" Arthur asked Mordred one day after an intense training session
"My lord, do you remember that little child you and Merlin helped sneak out of Camelot with your sister's help?" Modred questioned back.
"Yes, Sir Mordred I do what does that have to do with anything?"
"I was the child you helped rescue. I am a druid. I have magic, but only because it is the way of my people. I assure you I mean no harm to Camelot. I only wish to protect the people of Camelot's borders."
"I believe you Sir Mordred, I will tell no one of this."
"Thank you, your highness," Mordred bowed before leaving.
Later Arthur couldn't help but doubt the claims from Elyan and Gwen he had brushed off as untrue. What if Merlin really did have magic?
Arthur doubted Merlin would mean any harm to Camelot, because if he did Merlin could easily have killed half of the castle staff and trained knights without anyone knowing who did it. Merlin also easily could have killed Arthur if he wanted to. Merlin was close enough to Arthur on a day-to-day bases all he would have had to do is say one word and Arthur would be dead.
Even if Merlin does have magic, he would never use it for evil. Arthur concluded.
Knowing Mordred was in the midst of Camelot a place where magic was still illegal Arthur vowed to change it, so at the next Council meeting Arthur proposed a plan to keep magic under control but still allow the use of magic users who use magic for good, because as Arthur had once been told. Magic is like a sword neither good nor bad. It depends on the person who uses it if the weapon is used to kill or to protect.
2 months after Arthur plan was proposed the Council had agreed to pass it so there would be a big feast in the courtyard with druids, townsfolk, sorcerers, and servants. Everyone would be in attendance. That night a few previously unknown sorcerers were revealed that night, but none were prosecuted because they had used magic for only good.
The most dramatic reveal would have had to been Merlin's though. All night druids came up to Merlin calling him Emrys and congratulating him for helping bring magic back to Albion. After 30 minutes of druids congratulating Merlin, Arthur got fed up with all of the unknown attention Merlin was getting so the king pulled Merlin assigned and demanded to know what was going on.
Merlin calmly explained about his warlock heritage and that he is in fact the most powerful sorcerer to walk the Earth. No one not even the knights had seen their king speechless so when Arthur suddenly stopped talking all of the party inhabitants looked at him judging to see if something had happened to him before Arthur declared, "All hail Merlin Ambrosius the new court warlock."
Every single person who knew Merlin stared. They stared because Merlin was someone who no one would have thought had magic yet when the knights thought back on it. Merlin had always gone into battle unprotected no armor, no sword, just himself and the knights who also went into battle with him. The knights had occasionally lost sight of Merlin, yet every time Merlin only came out of a battle with a cut or bruise no serious injuries. They had always wondered how Merlin did it, but never questioned it. Now it made since Merlin used magic to protect himself and the others with him. All those times tree branches would fall onto their would-be captors. Never once had anyone suspected Merlin could or would be the cause of their captors misfortune.
Every single person in the hall bowed when Arthur declared Merlin court warlock. The druids started a chant for Merlin led by Modred of course.
Many years after magic was brought back and long before Camelot fell. King Arthur had lived a long and fulfilling life while his loyal friend and advisor Merlin lived on awaiting the day The Once and Future King would rise again.
