Percy at a Swim Meet: Warm Up (Part 1)
I only swim.
Very accurate depiction of a swim meet in my state. I don't own Percy Jackson or the concept of Swim Meets. Also, just because Percy is a son of Poseidon doesn't mean he would naturally have perfect technique. Swimmers work years to build up a good technique. Yes, Percy would probably learn the technique faster but he wouldn't be perfect on his first try. Translations of swimmer lingo at the end. Most likely through memes for a few. If anyone can decipher the sets your my friend.

P.S. I'm either distance, flyer, or a backstroker put your stroke in a comment if your a swimmer.
"Do you have everything Perce?" Sally Jackson asked her son.
"Yep! Cap, goggles, tech suit, warm-up suit, extra cap, extra goggles, two towels, snacks, water, Powerade, money, clothes, sweatshirt even though it's 90 degrees outside, sweatpants, sharpie, heat sheet, shampoo, conditioner, change of clothes, and a counter(1)," Percy replied. As he said the last one he pulled Annabeth towards him with his arm around her.
"You do realize you aren't swimming the 1650 (2) until tonight right?" Annabeth asked her boyfriend.
"Yes, but you're still cheering me on right?"
"Yes, don't know why I do it though."
"Because you love me."
"I guess that's true. At least I have an hour of timing (3) to keep me busy."
"Well we gotta get going then, we don't need to be late," Sally told the couple.
The trio hopped into the car ready for the first preliminary/ final (4)meet of the season. On the first day Percy would be swimming the 200 fly (5)in the morning and the 1650 later that night. On the second day, Percy would swim the 200 back(6),100 breast(7), and an 800 mixed freestyle relay(8) in the morning and swim the 400 IM(9) later in the day. On the third day, Percy was swimming the 200 breast, 200 free(10) with the 1000 free that night. The meet was three days: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The two demigods and one very amazing mother hopped out at the pool fifteen minutes early. Just in time for stretching. Percy wandered into the natatorium looking for his team's poster. His team wasn't necessarily big but it wasn't small either.
Percy had joined a local swim team a few months after he got back from the Giant War. Luckily, the Mist was able to hide his scars so that Percy didn't look out of place in the midst of so many scarless teens.
When Percy finally found the banner for his team he set his stuff down in the designated seating area and waited for the coaches to call for the group to stretch.
Fifteen minutes later and all of the 13&Os(11) were in lanes for warm-up.
"Do a three-hundred choice swim when the clock reaches the next top. Remember feet first don't dive," Coach Abby told her three lanes of swimmers.
Percy was first in his lane followed by his teammates, Jack, Mariam, Hayden, and Layla. The next two lanes each had five swimmers, while the two lanes of 13-14 swimmers had at least seven swimmers each. The last three lanes had a second team.
The whole pool had a bulkhead in the middle so two more teams were on the other side of the bulkheads which were about one or two meters apart. A couple more teams were warming up on the other side of the bulkhead.
In total the whole pool was fifty meters, but the teams would be swimming in a twenty-five-yard pool.
Once, the clock reached the thirty-minute mark Percy jumped in and started his swim followed by Jack five seconds after Percy, then Mariam five seconds after Jack. Hayden five seconds after Mariam, and Layla five seconds after Hayden.
Roughly three minutes later both lanes of 15&Os were done with their three hundred. Coach Abby approached again and said, "4x50s k-dill on the fifty. (13)"
The Coach received a nod from each teen in return.
"Start on the top(14)."
Again the coach received a nod. The top was a good 15 seconds away so, Percy had time to get in the ready position(15), before pushing off on his back in a streamline(16). Percy surfaced and started doing dolphin kicks on his back. Once Percy saw the flags he swam the rest of the way into the wall before doing a flip-turn (17). Percy started doing a drill called 2-2-2. He did two strokes with his right arm, two with his left arm, and then two with both arms.
Once every person hit the wall Coach Abby once again approached them to say, "6x50s descending 1-3 on 40 seconds(18). On the 20. (19)"
Percy looked at the clock he still had 20 seconds till he had to go. He relaxed his ready position for a few seconds before the clock hit the 15-second mark.
Percy did five dolphin kicks till he was on his stomach. When Percy surfaced he did the whole fifty butterfly at a steady pace and made touched the wall with ten seconds to spare. The second fifty Percy speed up his pace to a faster pace and made it to the wall with twelve seconds to spare. The third fifty Percy went all out and hit the wall just as the clock hit the 27 mark. He repeated this pattern once more yielding the same results.
"8x100s odds free, evens: IM swim on the 1:30(20). On the bottom(21)."
Nods throughout the three lanes. Percy checked the clock. ten seconds. The coach voiced this same thing, "Ten seconds guys."
Percy was in the ready position ready to take off in three seconds. The eight hundreds passed quickly, and soon the group was getting ready to do dives.
"Two dives first one go to the fifteen-meter mark. Second all the way," Abby told the group.
Percy was the first to hop up.
"Take your mark...GO!" The last word was explosive, each of the swimmers reacted naturally. Percy was first off the block followed by lane three then lane two.
After both dives were done by each person the coach declared their warm-up done. Now Percy only had to sit through the second group's warm-up and the thirty minutes before the meet starts.
These are some helpful explanations that may further your understanding of the swimming language. Keep in mind all of the distances are in yards. So a 200 is only 8 laps (I count laps as one length of the pool) while a 100 is 4 laps, 1650 is 66 laps, a 400 is 16 laps, and 1000 is 40 laps.
1- just stuff you can expect to find in a swimmer's swim bag for a meet.
That's not even everything. Some of it is mostly for a girls swim bag but I really don't know what all boys pack so I just put the basic necessities. I'll add a comment explaining why each item is necessary.
2-This is just a mile of swimming freestyle.
Basically about the feeling when swimming any longer distance once you get out of the pool.
What the coach does to you in freestyle especially when you have a breathing pattern to follow.
3- Most of the time parents or friends will volunteer to time for an hour or so depending on how many people sign up. Usually timing is hot and sweaty work, especially when the weather is really hot and humid.
4-I think most sports have this but prelim/final is when someone swims in the morning and if they make top 16 they come back later that night. Most of the meets I've been too for the longer events such as the mile, the thousand, the five hundred, and the four hundred IM top 4 girls and top 4 boys swim in finals for those.
5-Fly is short for Butterfly
Fly isn't always horrible but trust me a 200 of fly can suck.
6-Back is short for backstroke.
I'm occasionally a backstroker. I mainly do it in practice on stroke sets because I don't want to do fly. 200 back isn't too bad though.
7-Breast is short for breaststroke
I'm not a breaststroker. I don't particularly want to do a 200 of breaststroke.
8-Mixed 800 freestyle relay. 2 boys and 2 girls in the relay. Each swimmer swims a 200 freestyle. Honestly not that bad of an event even though I've haven't done it yet.
9-IM stands for Individual Medley.
Sound advice for the 400 IM.
10-Free is short for Freestyle
Especially when the person their counting for splashes when they turn. Counting is only used on the 500, 1000, and 1650 which are all freestyle events. I don't think anyone wants to swim a 1650 of fly or a 500 at that.
11-13&O is short for 13 and over. Basically any swimmer of 13-18 is included in this range.
12-15&O basically short for 15 and over. Any swimmer in the age range 15-18.
13-It means 4 fifties kick drill by 25 on fifty seconds.
14- On the top means go on the 60 second mark.
My reaction when I didn't hear what the coach told us to do.
15-The ready position is when someone has their knees facing towards the wall. One hand on the wall and the other either behind them or to their side. Swimmers are facing forward and should only turn their head to the side to look at a clock.
16-Streamline hands above your head one on top of the other. Only used when underwater or kicking with no kick board.
17-Flip turn. Kind of like a front flip in water where you feet land firmly on the wall before pushing off into a streamline.
Worst feeling ever.
18-The break down. six fifty yards swim getting faster from 1-3 and 4-6. The fifties are on 40 seconds.
19- Leave on the 20 second mark.
20-Breakdown. 8x100s odds free, evens: IM swim on the 1:30. Eight one hundred yards swim odd number freestyle even number individual medley swim. On the 1 minute 30 second interval.
21-On the bottom. Leave on the 30 second mark.
A few memes about swimming now/ not really memes reasons you should respect swimmers.
There you go 1000 words explaining a few words/phrases of swimmer language.
