It Happened One Night
The day started like any other day, yet it was a day that changed my life forever. The story starts with a knock on my door. The story ends with the discovery of the murderer of my husband, mob boss Shamus McGinity. What happens in between here and there you'll need to discover for yourself.
The phone rang, it was Johnny from the Rusty Nail, a bar my husband owned. "Coppers, headed yer way, Lulu. Whatcha want me to do?"
"Keep a cool head, Johnny. Until we know what they want there's no need to sound the alarm."
"Alright Lulu, but should ya need us..."
"I know. You and the gang have my back," I placed the receiver down and looked over at him. Tall, dark, and dangerous, Brody Delany was, but it wasn't the revolver I knew he had hidden in a holster at his back that concerned me. No, Brody was dangerous to me in a completely different way.
"You gotta scram. The Fuzz are on their way. Something big has gone down and they want to talk to me."
He strode across the room, and grabbed me about my waist, pulling me in close. "We aren't done here, Sweetheart. Not by a long shot."
"I know but now is not the time, Brody. Please? Until I know what they want from me I need to know you're safe."
"And I need to know the same. I'm not going anywhere. Tell them I'm your personal body guard."
I sighed. There was a knock on my door. There was no need to talk anymore. The decision had been made for us.
I opened the door and seen two plain clothed policemen, one I knew quite well. "Officer McCarty. What brings you to my door? Certainly, this is no social visit?"
"I'm 'fraid not, Mrs. McGinty. I need you to come with me, to the station in Busted Gulch City."
"Wherever she goes, I go," said Delany who stood protectively behind me.
Officer McCarty shrugged, "Fine by me."
"Am I being arrested?" I asked.
"No ma'am, not at this time. We need you to identify someone."
This took me by surprise. "Identify?" McCarty was being cautious, his expression down right guarded. I couldn't help the shiver that ran down my spine. This was... whatever this was, was bad.
McCarty looked at Brody and back to me, "We can explain more once you are at the station."
"Brody get my coat will ya?"
Brody nodded.
"Hope you don't mind Billy but I ain't going anywhere until I got my lawyer on the horn."
"Do what you must, Lou. We'll wait."
The officer with McCarty gave us both a strange look when we addressed one another by first names but McCarty's features never changed.
Ten minutes later we were in the squad car and headed to the big apple, Busted Gulch City. I could not imagine whom they'd want me to identify. I have dimed out my fair share of crooks. I was a whistle blower and had given the coppers on many occasions the information they needed to bring down some pretty big names but in return I wanted two things, anonymity and immunity. I got both. It's the only way I survived this long in my husband's world.
Shamus McGinty was Oh Ace's Irish Mob Boss. He made crime his career and women his hobby. They wanted me to turn evidence on him, but if I ever did, I'd be dead so I made a deal to be a whistle blower instead.
I was flabbergasted as we pulled into the station. Half of it was in a smoldering ruin. "What happened here?" I asked as McCarty gave me a hand out of the squad car.
"Guess you missed the Rumble. Someone bombed the station last night. We had in custody, the leader of the Spanish Mafia. His wife cut a deal and turned evidence on him. He'd been running dope. Guess someone didn't want him to talk."
Brody came up behind me, taking my arm. "Shall we?"
"Let's," Officer McCarty said.
He led the way, my heart leapt into my throat and mouth went dry as a stale muffin. Instead of taking me to any interrogation room or to see any line-up, I realized we were headed to the double doors that led to the City's morgue.
"John Doe, #157, Doc," McCarty said.
The doctor nodded, taking off his rubber gloves from his current autopsy. He placed them aside on his silver instrument tray. He walked over to the metal racks. It must have been a busy night, the bodies were piled like day old bread.
He flipped the tag and pulled the metal slab across the rollers to a gurney and wheeled the sheet covered body to in front of me. I didn't know what I would see. Brody stood so close I could feel the heat from his body.
Billy nodded to the doc and he pulled back the sheet.
My brain went whacky, my world turned black. I'd tell you more but I can't.
