A Night Like Any Other (Ruechari)

It was a night like any other and things seemed to be going my way. I got the call I'd been waiting for. My source was ready to deliver. They figured it out...Myna's recipe. It was made easier of course once I got hold of her secret ingredient.

Not surprising however, Bruce decided to double cross me. I was standing in the alley behind the Rusty Nail waiting for him to arrive.

"You're looking pleased with yourself," Brody said to me.

"And why wouldn't I. I'm about to rival Rockefeller if this goes according to plan."

"And is this part of your plan?" he says to me as I notice Bruce coming up the alley.

"This is a hiccup, one I expect you to deal with, as I have another meeting to attend. Meet me at the Velveteen in Busted Gulch when you're through."

I didn't wait around to see what happened next. I knew Brody would handle it. Although, he is at times, more lenient than I would be. I had bigger fish to fry.

I drove into the Big Apple. Soon it will all be mine.

I came to a stop at our meeting place, a warehouse on 33rd. "What's with the Trigger Men?" I asked, looking at Donavan and his entourage.

"I don't trust you."

I place my hand over my heart and pretend to act wounded. "After all we've been through together, Donavan." I shake my head in disbelief and then shrug. "You can tell them to put their convincers away. I ain't aiming to kill any of them tonight... just that Spanish fella you got locked up. Everything all set?"

"It is. The shift change happens at 8:30. I'll delay the new guards. The only people that will be affected by the blast will be Tex and a few petty criminals. No loss there."

I couldn't help my smirk. My how the mighty had fallen. Donavan had been a thorn in my side for years. Messing with my organization. It was a war, us against them and now...

"This should seal the deal with KanBo, you hear word yet on that muffin recipe?"

I frowned and shook my head, plastered my best poker face on my mug. "Were close Donavan, REAL close but nothing yet."

"Well, remember you've got no deal with Winks if you don't deliver."

"I'm aware." I tell him and check my watch 8:00 pm... "Looks like I best make tracks."

Donavan nodded and I was off to the clubhouse. Just as planned, at the shift changed I entered, I left and in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. The explosion shook the street. Cars collided. It was utter chaos, and with all that going on, no one paid me any mind as I walked back out of the station, got to my car and went to Chinatown to deliver the good news.

Xiao greeted me at the gate and took me to where KanBo and I could meet without the elders knowing. It was the whole reason I did not trust him. I have no respect for those who do not respect their elders.

So, it really didn't take me by surprise when he pulled a fast one. Xiao was a good fighter but his knife was no match for my roscoe. Still I had the feeling he was holding back. I was annoyed by the new slit in my suit. It was just a nick but my jacket was ruined.

"That's just a reminder, if you are thinking of double crossing me Irish, the next cut runs deep."

"I've kept my end, KanBo. The Spanish Mob Boss is no more, so you have no competition in BG."

"No one but you," he said, eyes narrowing.

"I'm pleased you think of me so highly, KanBo, but my territory is in Oh Aces."

"See that you don't forget that."

I smirked and nodded. "Of course." The NoLuks didn't have the recipe; I brokered a better deal with Winks. Once prohibition was lifted, him and I would own this town and every other city that was hungry for muffins. Not even Brody was clued in to my plan.

"If were done here gentlemen I have a date in the city."

KanBo shrugged, and Xiao continued to look bored. I imagine if he wasn't causing someone pain, life held little enjoyment for him. I took my leave and headed over to the Muffin District, but first I needed to make a stop to see my special lady.

I knocked and she opened the door to let me in. I drank her in. She was a vision to behold. "Hello Doll. Miss me?"

Rosie smiled at me. "You know I would never admit to it, even if I did."

I grabbed her around the waist. "You don't have too, Sweetheart. I can see it written clearly on your face."

"Is that so?" she taunts.

I kiss her neck and she nearly purrs like the kitten I know her to be.

She pushes me away and tries to look cross. "So what's with the ..." she flicks the knick in my sleeve.

I grumble but don't bother to explain. "I have another stop to make before going to dinner with you. I'll see if I can pick one up before then."

"Don't be long. You know I hate to be kept waiting."

"Oh, if this goes the way I'm planning Rosie, both of our dreams come true."

She looked at me with those shutters and I can see the hunger in them. Lulu use to look at me like that, she use to believe in me, support my ambitions but now...

"Don't tease me," she pleaded.

I put my hand in my jacket pocket and pull out the divorce papers. "Once I get her to sign, Baby Doll it's just you and me and a road paved in muffins."

Rosie squeals and throws herself into my arms again showering me with kisses. I laugh and enjoy the attention, but come to my senses. "Cool it, Sweetheart or I won't make it out of here."

She gives me one of those looks, and I nearly cave. I shake it off. "Easy there Doll we'll have the rest of our lives after tonight, for that as so much more."

She giggles and I smirk. I give her a peck on the check and chuckle at her look of disappointment. "You're lucky your such a cake eater or I would have replaced you long ago."

"Tell the truth you can't live without me?" She scrunched her face like she just sucked a lemon and I laughed.

I made it to my source. He tossed me a muffin. I took one bite and it was perfection. "So we are go on this then?" He nodded and handed me a bag with a new muffin to take as my proof to Winks that we've mastered Myna's recipe.

I was running late but made it to the Velveteen. Rosie I was told was already inside. I go to join her but the bouncer flags my jacket and the rip and hands me a loaner. I sigh and take it off and put the new one on.

Rosie and I enjoyed our evening. "You're looking a bit flushed." Rosie hands me another drink. "Must be all that fancy dancing," I say. She was hard to keep up with, but it was her dancing that first made me notice her, that and she had a beautiful voice.

I noticed the time and realized Brody would be arriving soon. "I gotta go, Doll."

She pouted. "So soon."

I touched her cheek. "Tomorrow everything changes. You can wait that long can't you."

"If I must," She says in a petulant tone.

I loosened my collar and gave her a kiss. "Til tomorrow, sweetheart."

I took the back way knowing Brody normally would pull up in the alley. I couldn't believe my luck everything was falling into place. My steps stumbled. And I recognized what was happening a second too late.

My old nemesis had found me. Could life be this cruel? My heart pounded and leapt into my throat. No, not now. This can't be how it ends, could it?  Panic gripped my chest. I looked inside my jacket but it was too late for me. Death came swift, and all my dreams came to an end.
