Definition of Love

"I am taking you on a roadtrip," my boyfriend informed me without asking me my opinion. He knew I would love to go with him.

"Well, actually—" I began, but he cut me off.

"I know you have work tomorrow morning. We'll be back."

"How can you make that possible?" I questioned.

"Trust me, babe. We have tonight, and that's all it'll take. Come with me, please," he begged. I agreed and stepped into the car with him. "Just enjoy the ride. Don't ask me where we're going every five seconds. Because I won't know."

I agreed, and Cruz just drove. I constantly would look over at him and smile as I watched him drive.

"What if people had remotes that you could like, have say over what they do?" I wondered as we drove through back roads to which we'd never ventured to before.

"That would be different," he nodded and chuckled, turning into another road.

"You know what your remote would be called? Cruz control," I joked. Cruz looked at me and shook his head before bursting out laughing. He pulled off the road for a minute so we could calm down.

"There are so many reasons I love you," he began, "and that is definitely not one of them!"

We both laughed again, and I protested, "You love me AND my jokes. I know it."

"Okay, you caught me. I guess I love your jokes just as much as I love you. You really are the best, though, Everly."

"I love you, too, Cruz," I reciprocated the words he'd used.

He turned up the music loud so we could sing along with the words as we drove around, enjoying the night sky and the summer air with the windows rolled down. I held Cruz's right hand in my left and pulled it up to my chest. Everything felt right.

Nothing seemed to go wrong that night. Both of us sang at the top of our lungs and breathed in enough of the night breeze to last the entire summer.

Soon, we pulled off the side of the road near a random field, and Cruz asked me to get out of the car. I did so, and we both walked into the field. We both fell onto the grass in a mess of our two bodies.

We lay there that night, staring at the stars. Neither of us could find any constellations to save our lives, not even the Big Dipper, but we still enjoyed looking up into the vast expanse that was our night sky.

"Everly, stay with me forever," Cruz begged.

"You know I will. I want to stay here forever. Never have to work. No responsibilities. Just us two," I admitted, looking into Cruz's light blue eyes. I kissed him softly.

"I wish life worked that way." Cruz shook his head. "But you know, anything is possible with you. Because love makes anything possible. And you're my definition of love."
