29 | Exasperation and Misunderstandings
I let out an exasperated breath running my hand through my hair as I watch Avni's car speed down the street.
"Dammit!" I hit my hand on the car next to me.
I start to feel mad at Ruby and Avni both for inducing it because I am damn sure Avni wouldn't do anything unless Ruby had ignited her.
I am about to go inside and give Ruby a piece of my mind for creating a misunderstanding between us. I stop discovering I am supposed to go after my wife.
"God." I exhale as I rush to my car and I drive down the street.
I was actually pissed off when I heard that Avni has gotten into a feud with Ruby. This is the place to work not to conflict. I get that she is having a hard time here with Ruby and Rose but I want her to ignore them if not for us then for herself.
I was angry at her when I saw her strangle Ruby because it was not right. I knew we were about to have a big argument when I pulled her out with me.
I don't think Avni realizes that she was shaking a little in the elevator and it got me worried so I made an effort to keep the argument aside. It just startles me how she doesn't acknowledge that with all of this she is just hurting herself.
I can feel my nerves calm down when I glimpse her car going slowly down the street.
What the hell has my life become now?
Isn't this what I was running from?
I didn't want this- commitment.
I didn't want to have to worry about convincing my wife every time something goes wrong or compromise my life just because someone is my wife. I didn't want to worry about someone causing misunderstandings between us. I didn't want to put someone else before me.
Yet here I am chasing my wife just because my ex created a misunderstanding between us even when this marriage isn't real.
Despite everything I want Avni to learn that what Ruby said to her was incorrect and that I didn't say those words at all. I don't want any misunderstandings between us even if we aren't real because we are supposed to have each other until the end of this.
The slanting rays of the setting sun gave a warm orange tinge to the sky. I roll down the windows as I let the fresh air inside and pull my car beside Avni's. She glances at me and looks away instantly as she wipes her tears with the back of her hand.
Why does she do this to herself?
When she embarks to speed up I am fast enough to catch her speed and I pull my car in front of her being cautious to not crash her car.
She looks at me through the windshield as she hits the brakes. I turn off my engine and pull the keys out so she knows there's no way I am letting her go without having a conversation.
I lean against the seat as I cross my arms on my chest while she keeps glaring at me.
"Why do you have that bossy look on your face right now?" She finally asks annoyed as she turns off her engine.
"You have the bossy look on your face too," I say. "Am I complaining?"
"I am sure I don't look as bad as you." She rolls her eyes.
"Yeah because you look as good as me," I say with a half-smile.
"Yeah." She says and frowns after a moment.
I laugh slowly at her while she makes a face at me and rolls her eyes. Silence drops between us shortly and I step out of the car after a moment.
"Why are you here?" She asks looking away from me as I stand by in front of her car.
"Why do you think I am here?" I ask as I lean against my car.
"Why do you always ask a question to my question instead of answering?" She rolls her eyes. "I want to be alone. Just- leave."
I look at her for a moment and I choose my words before saying anything. "I am supposed to look after my wife that's why I am here."
"Your wife." She scoffs before she pushes the door and steps out suddenly looking angry.
"Where is the respect you are supposed to have for your wife?" She asks. "Didn't you think about your wife as you consoled your pathetic ex-girlfriend?"
"Do you seriously think you are doing good as a husband?" She asks mockingly. "You couldn't convince your ex-girlfriend properly while keeping your wife's respect. And you said what? That I mean nothing to you?"
"Seriously? That's what you say to console her? And she comes and throws it on my face!" I watch as she bursts out. "Is that what proves us being real?"
"Avni-"
"No, please." She interrupts. "I don't want to hear again that I mean something to you just because you want to avoid this argument."
I look at her as I clench my jaw. She isn't even listening to me, it's all about her here. It's me that means nothing to her.
"I am angry at you not because you said whatever you said to her. I am angry because I don't want people to see me as a low-life-"
I sigh as I reach out and wrap my arm around her. I yank her close to me and thrust my lips hard against hers. She gasps in surprise and I run my lips rough against hers.
I can feel my anger as I kiss her. There are so many things I can point out and show that she isn't acting good as a wife too but I chose to ignore them because I have seen her being so sad in the past few days and I don't want to upset her again.
She keeps her hand on my cheek as she pulls away slowly. "If you are kissing me so that I stop arguing then just know that I'll argue after we finish kissing."
Despite the anger that I feel I chuckle as she puts her arms around me to kiss me. I hold her tightly as I deepen the kiss and she moans softly as I tug on her lower lip.
I pull away when a car passes by realizing that this isn't the time for it.
"For you, all of this is about you," I say as I look into her eyes. "The truth is I mean nothing to you. It's you who doesn't think about me."
"Why don't you realize that you are making things harder for yourself?" I ask as I shake my head.
"I am not. All of them are hell-bent on making things harder for me." She pulls away from me. "Even you. You shouldn't have said to her I mean nothing to you, you should pretend that I do."
I clench my jaw feeling angry at her. "You give people exactly what they ask for."
"You seriously do, Avni." She looks up at me catching up to the anger in my voice.
"I accept that I might have made things complicated for us with the conversation I had with Ruby but nowhere did I mention that you mean nothing to me. Why would I do that?"
"Ruby had all intentions to create a misunderstanding between us and you let her. Tell me how aren't you giving them what they want?" I demand. "Aren't you smart enough to know what tricks usually ex's pull up?"
She purses her lips as she looks at me silently and now that I have initiated I decide that I'll let it all out.
"And you need to stop saying I don't do good as a husband because I don't see you doing well as a wife too," I say and I know I am being a little harsh but I can't help it.
She looks away from me as she clenches her jaw.
"You tell me that I didn't think about your respect? That isn't even true but still, you are making a big deal out of it."
"Because all I care about is me." She looks up at me angrily. "I don't care if I am sounding selfish but that's all I own and I don't compromise with it."
"So what about my respect then?" I demand as I take a step forward. "Do you think it's easy to have people say bad about their boss's wife? Am I not failing my respect there?"
She takes a step back and looks away.
"Tell me, Avni," I demand angrily. "I have a reputation in my company and people might see me as a low soul when they look at my wife and think bad about you because you feud with Rose and Ruby."
"Remember that you are proudly telling my company just because I married you." She says angrily.
"Yes and for that, I have given you something which means a lot to you. You aren't doing favors here." I glare at her feeling irritated that she is shooting that at me now.
"I just wanted you to be my wife. I didn't want you to get into a feud with my ex-girlfriend and your former best friend and make things complicated for us."
I never wanted to mention Rose and Ruby to hurt Avni anyway but that's how everyone sees it as. My ex-girlfriend and her former best friend.
"I don't like to get into a feud with any of them." She glares at me. "They provoke me."
"Is anyone seeing that?" I ask. "Is anyone asking you why you are doing what you are doing?"
I can see her fighting back tears as she clutches her jacket. I know that I just have to let it out all now if I don't want any of it to arise again.
"All everyone notice is you hovering over someone or someone having a sprained ankle because of you," I say. "Rose took leave to prove it and Ruby pretend to be the weak person as soon as people started getting into your office."
"I don't care." She looks up at me. "I don't want to prove to people I am right. I know that I am."
I reach out and wipe a tear off her cheek as I look at her. It does hurt to see her this way.
"But I do," I say. "I want us to set a good example of Husband and Wife. I don't want anyone to talk bad about us just because a few people provoke you."
"What am I supposed to do?" She exhales. "I cannot control myself when they talk shit."
"Don't talk to them at all," I say. "That's my whole point. They talk to provoke you so just don't talk. Ignore them."
"I am designing for them." She rolls her eyes. "I'll be taking their measurements, doing their fittings, and being present at the photoshoots. How do you think I can ignore them?"
I look at her for a moment as I think about it. "Uh, do you listen to songs?"
"Everyone does, I guess." She frowns.
"Yes." I grin. "So whenever you are around them just turn on the music and put on Airpods."
"Seriously?" She raises her eyebrows.
"Yes." I chuckle. "They will know you want to ignore them or just say it out loud to them. When you are alone just walk away from them and when with everyone in a room don't give them a chance to talk at all."
"They come to my office." She shakes her head.
"You are all getting in touch with HR, I guess." I shrug. "Just don't get into a fight there and keep your point."
"I'll try." She shrugs.
I shake my head. "You have to. I don't want anyone to talk bad about you and us."
"If not for us do it for yourself," I add. "You don't need these arguments. You need peace and I want you to enjoy whatever you are doing. Enjoy coming to work and not think about the people who ignite you."
"Will you try that?" I ask as I keep my hand on her cheek. "For yourself?"
She nods slowly. "I will."
I sigh as I reach out to hug her and I close my eyes as she rests her head on my chest. I press a kiss on her hair feeling concerned about us.
I hope we will be okay until the end of this.
And even after that.
