Ch 5 -- Texts

Lucy and Natsu sat next to each other during their sixth class. It turned out that there was a substitute for Ms. Alberona. She was probably off drinking somewhere.

So, instead, the sub, who introduced them self as Ms. Laki, let them have the class off. They could move about and do anything they wanted as long as they didn't destroy school property.

And so, the students took the opportunity to bombard Lucy and Natsu with questions about the game they were playing.

Erza and Jellal kind of acted as bodyguards for them, leading the students away.

"I LOVE YOU, NATSU-SAMA!" Some random girl screamed, making lots of guys roll their eyes in annoyance or jealousy.

"Lucy-san, I know you'll win!" A different girl cheered.

"No, Natsu-san will win!" A boy countered.

"Pfft," the girl replied, "Lucy-san is way cooler than that pinkie."

They continued to argue but Lucy and Natsu didn't really care.

"Hey, what's your phone number?" Lucy abruptly asked Natsu, catching him off-guard.

"What?" His face was blank.

"Your phone number." She said again. "What is it?"

"Oh," he muttered, finally hearing what she said and proceeded to take out his phone.

Lucy already had hers out.

They exchanged numbers and texted as a test run.

--

Natsu glanced at this phone, seeing that Lucy had just sent him a text.

Lucy

Hi

Hello

--

Lucy smiled at his lame response to her "hi." It amused her, so she continued.

Natsu

Hi

Hello

What a lame response

Natsu is typing...

--

Natsu frowned as he read the text Lucy sent as a reply. His fingers moved across the screen, typing in his own reply.

Lucy

Hi

Hello

What a lame response

No one asked your opinion, you know

Just stating the truth

-_-

Btw, your bag is being invaded by your precious friend with a ponytail

He turned and sure enough, Gajeel was there, raiding his bag.

"Hey!" he shouted at him but he wasn't fazed and continued searching for whatever it was that he was looking for.

Suddenly, he lifted his arm, holding a piece of paper in his hand.

"Found it!" he shouted, throwing Natsu's bag randomly across the room and returning to his desk with the paper.

Gray walked over to him to see what he had found. "Oh my god, we had homework for Mirajane-sensei??" He exclaimed.

"Yeah, remember that essay we had to do?" Gajeel told him, identifying him to be copying Natsu's essay onto his own paper.

"Hey! Don't copy my hard work!" Natsu yelled jumping to get the homework from Gajeel's desk.

"No can do, I need this hard work, or," he shuddered at the thought of an angry Mirajane-sensei.

"I don't even want to think about that.." He finished and Levy rolled her eyes.

"It's a good thing we finished that on Saturday," Juvia whispered to Erza who nodded heavily.

The boys continued to fight over the homework and the girls continued chatting about how Mirajane-sensei might act since they had her for their first class.

The school bell rang and all the students ran out to their seventh class, the last class of the day.

As luck would have it, all eight of them had the same class.

Math with Mr. Gildarts who always insisted we call him just Gildarts.

"Gildarts!" Natsu yelled as he leaned in to punch the teacher in the gut but instead the older man took his arm and twisted it around his body, not harming the boy at all.

"Hey, Natsu!" He greeted back and they shared an oblivious grin.

The other seven went to sit in their seats.

They learned the same things as they did the other day so it was easy for most of the students.

Most.

"Agh! How do you do this??" Gajeel pulled his hair when he couldn't figure out the answer to a math problem.

He turned to Jellal who sighed and told him to learn on his own.

Natsu was also having trouble with it but he figured out that he could ask Lucy, one of the smartest in their grade and he was able to answer it with ease.

But Gajeel couldn't ask Lucy, that'd be like stealing one of his friends' girlfriends or something.

So, instead, he decided to swallow his pride.

"L-levy," he felt himself say to the small blue-haired girl.

She turned to him and he felt his face heat up in embarrassment as he stared into her eyes.

When she finally noticed who it was, she frowned and folded her arms.

"What do you want?" She asked bluntly.

Gajeel felt nervous under her gaze which was definitely a new experience.

"I was thinking that you could help me with one of the math problems.." He managed to say without stuttering like an idiot.

Levy just sat in her seat.

"Uh," Gajeel opened his mouth to say she didn't have to when she sighed rather loudly.

"Okay, what problem you having trouble with?" She asked, gesturing for him to take the chair from the desk in front of her and turn it around.

He did so and pointed to the question.

She took a look at his work, looking for mistakes and notes.

"What part didn't you understand?" She said, completely serious.

It kind of shocked Gajeel that she'd be that willing to help him but he accepted it happily.

He pointed out the part he was confused on and Levy giggled.

Gajeel's cheeks reddened. "W-what?"

"The only reason you got the question mixed up is because you added instead of multiplying." She told him and he blinked a few times.

"Really??" He exclaimed, leaning in closer to see the mistake.

Levy pointed it out for him and he felt so stupid.

"God, I'm dumb," he muttered.

Levy patted him on the shoulder, making him look up and see a large smile plastered on her face.

"Don't worry," she spoke, "mistakes are how we learn."

Gajeel widened his eyes and quickly stood up from the chair, almost making it tumble over.

"Gajeel? You alright?" Levy asked, oblivious to his very red face of embarrassment.

"Yeah," he murmured, "thanks for the help."

He then, proceeded to walk back to his seat and continue his work, leaving Levy very confused but she just let it be by thinking he wanted to finish his worksheet.

--

The school bell rang and school was officially over.

Lucy glanced at her phone to see notifications for texts. She had turned her phone off in class so she could work on the math problems.

She groaned when she saw that they were all from Natsu.

Natsu

Hey, can you help me on my math work?

Heeeyyyy

You there??

I'm gonna spam you until you respond

OH MY GOD, GAJEEL IS SO RED

It's a shame you can't see it

Lucy almost face-palmed as she read the texts she had received. They were so stupid.

She decided to text back.

Natsu

You know, being dead and all

I'm not dead

SHE'S ALIVE

You're so childish

SHE HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE

...

Um, sorry.

You should be very sorry

But I just said that I was..

You're so stupid

That wasn't a compliment

Lucy sighed and put her phone in her pocket.

This Natsu guy was so unpredictable and weird. But she wouldn't forget what he did to Coco. After all, looks can be deceiving.
