twenty-five

in the morning, josh woke up before tyler and got bored waiting for him to wake up. he slipped on some comfy clothes and made his way into the kitchen, finding tyler's mom cooking.

"good morning, kelly," he smiled, the aroma of bacon clouding the room.

"morning, joshua. how'd you sleep?"

thankfully, josh was able to hold himself back from smirking. "really good."

"that's great. is tyler still sleeping?"

"yeah."

"hm, that's different. usually he's up early and helps me make breakfast."

jeez, josh must've done a good job then.

"i could help you if you want," josh suggested.

"oh, no, it's fine."

"no, really. i don't have anything better to do."

"well, in that case, could you make some toast?"

✨🌸✨

after breakfast, josh wanted to take tyler and his siblings out to do something fun. they piled into josh's car, tyler shotgun and maddy sitting in between zack and jay.

"where do you guys want to go?" josh asked.

"the movies," tyler spoke first.

"yeah, i want to see that new movie with kevin hart and the rock!" jay agreed.

"jumanji."

"yeah, that one."

"i want to go to the mall!" maddy pouted.

"i wanna go to the arcade," zack pouted, copying his sister's actions by crossing his arms.

"movies," jay argued.

"mall!"

"arcade!"

"how about you surprise us, josh?" tyler spoke up, knowing they would never agree on something to do.

"yeah!" maddy smiled.

"i like surprises!" zack claimed in excitement.

"okay, i know the perfect place."

✨🌸✨

"a roller skating rink?!" tyler groaned, reading the sign as josh pulled into the parking lot. "I can't roller skate!"

"i can," maddy claimed proudly.

"i'll teach you," josh assured. "it'll be really fun."

"fine."

they exited the car together. jay let zack hold his hand as they walked in, while tyler held josh's and maddy was on her phone. josh paid for the five of them, thirty dollars in total but he didn't mind. the man stamped their hands before they entered.

"jay, look! there's a ball pit!" zack announced excitedly, tugging on his brother's shirt.

"want to go on the bouncy house with me, first?" jay asked. even if he was 15, he was a kid at heart.

"i'm gonna go play with them," maddy told josh and tyler before running off to join the other two.

"this is a nice place," tyler commented as josh got both of them skates to put on. he got himself roller blades, but figured tyler would have a harder time with them so he got him regular skates.

"are you good at skating?"

"yeah, i guess," josh shrugged, helping tyler tie his skates.

once their skates were on, josh held tyler's hand as they slowly skated their way onto the rink. tyler looked awkward, not knowing how to carry himself, while josh looked more natural like he'd done this a million times before.

"please don't go fast," tyler begged. "i'm horrible at this!"

"you'll get better!" josh promised, skating just a little ahead of tyler so he could pull him along. "move your feet outward, like this."

tyler watched how josh was skating, trying to copy his actions, but as they turned the corner tyler ended up tripping and sliding across the wooden rink.

"shit!" he cursed. "my ass! now it hurts even worse!"

josh made sure to ask if tyler was okay before he bursted out laughing, making tyler laugh too. "it's not funny!" tyler giggled.

"it's pretty funny. wanna take a break?"

tyler nodded, even though they just started. josh guided him to the blue bench that surrounded the entire rink, pulling tyler onto his lap. his head rested on tyler's shoulder.

"i love you," he spoke easily, wrapping his arms around tyler's waist in a hug.

"i love you too. thanks for taking my siblings out. i know they appreciate it."

"well, they're my family too, now."

"we aren't married," tyler pointed out.

"no, but your family is still my family."

"does that make me your family?" tyler giggled.

"well yeah, but not the related kind. the husband kind. even if we aren't married... yet."

"you're gonna make me your husband some day?"

"of course i am. i wouldn't want to wake up every day to anybody else."

tyler smiled at his boyfriend, leaning up to give him a kiss. "you're amazing, josh."

"i think you're just describing yourself," josh teased, running their noses together in an eskimo kiss.

"um, excuse me," a voice spoke, breaking them away from the moment they were having.

"yes?" josh asked, eyeing the woman who was standing before them.

"this is a family place. i don't want my son to see two men all over each other."

"oh, but I'm assuming if one of us was a girl it would be alright?" josh was getting mad, tyler could tell. he tried to rub his arm in a soothing way.

"josh, it's fine..."

"yes, that's right. i don't want my son to think it's alright for him to like boys."

josh glanced down to the little boy standing next to her, who had to be around five or six. he looked confused, like he didn't know why his mom thought it was so bad. josh gave the little guy a smile.

"hi, kiddo. don't listen to your mommy. you can love whoever you want to love, as long as they make you happy."

"excuse me?!" she yelled, veins popping out on her forehead. "who are you to tell my son something like that?"

"you can't tell him who he can and can't love," josh rolled his eyes. "just like you can't tell us."

he turned to tyler, planting a kiss on his lips as the mom gasped.

"you're going to hell! i don't want my son to go to hell."

"mommy, they won't go to hell," the little boy finally spoke up. "god loves dem cause they love each other."

josh and tyler started laughing as the woman's face drained color. "james i-"

"i like your hair!" the boy smiled at josh before he skatedboff, leaving his mother no choice but to follow.

tyler made no attempt to move from josh's lap, making the latter smile. "people these days, huh?" he chuckled, kissing the boy on his cheek.

"she was stupid," tyler rolled his eyes. "i love you and no cranky, homophobic woman will ever change that."
