CHAPTER III: THE SHADOW

Renea Ramsey

Renea lay still on the gravel, she didn't mind that rocks were poking at her skin; or the heat she could feel licking against her. She was terrified to open her eyes and see what was going on, just as her curiosity begged for them to be open. Her eyes twitched every once in awhile; Renea squeezed her eyes together, forcing them not to look; but she knew that she couldn't stay here for long, the heat burned warm.

"One," She whispered, unclenching her fingers from her tattered shirt.

"Two," Renea said a bit louder, forcing her body to relax; taking a deep breath.

"Three!" She yelled, opening her eyes, sitting up; looking around in exhilaration, Renea could hear her own blood pounding in her ears; flames surrounded her; she couldn't see past them. Standing up slowly, Renea twirled in a circle slowly; Her heart racing as the flames seem to come closer.

She turned back quickly, her footwork stumbling slightly, her eyes glimpsing the outline of a tall figure; Renea took a step forward, trying to follow the figure who had moved. A flame seemed to tickle at her face before she jumped backwards; Renea followed the frame with her eyes, goosebumps covering her arms as she watched it moved around her in a small circle. Her heart quickened considerably, she could feel her pulse in her fingers.

Renea watched as the flames opened, slightly. She jumped through the flames, coming face to face with a boy a bit taller than she was; with dark hair though his face was hidden in the fire, Renea couldn't make out the boys face. He didn't say anything as he held his hand out for Renea, she grabbed it with a grin as he pulled her towards him the rest of the way. She could feel the heat on her body though it didn't burn her, it was a pleasant feeling.

Light shined through her eyelids, they seemed to glow as her eyes snapped opened; above her floated an elongated shadow. Renea's body turned rigid as the shadow moved quickly towards her door; she looked towards the window as the sun was setting. Renea moved from her bed quickly; reaching for the shadow, smiling as her fingers enfolded around the shadow. She pulled silhouette towards her dresser, opening the drawer and shoving it into it and locking it.

"Ren Ren!" Huntington screamed excitedly, rushing towards her. The already large smile widen as he wrapped his tiny arms around Renea's legs. "Daddy, and Mommy picked us up at school today and we went to Grammies!"

Her eyebrows rose, Renea's smile turning into a smirk; "Is that right?" she questioned, looking over towards Felix, he nodded with a smile. "Did you two just get home?"

Both of the boys nodded, Renea looked towards her alarm, sighing in relief as she caught the time. She had only been napping for an hour, and would still be able to fall asleep tonight though the time was closing in on Felix's and Huntington's bedtime. "Can you tell us a bedtime story," Huntington smiled up at her, his face bright red with excitement.

Renea sat there silently, her chest compressed in on her; for a moment she thought she was going to stop breathing. She looked from Huntington's face and then to Felix's and back again. "Don't worry, Mom and Dad went out to eat with a few of Dad's work friends. They won't be back until late,"

Letting out a breath of relief, Renea sat Huntington on her bed; moved towards her trunk on the other side of the room, she looked behind her, watching as Felix took a seat besides their youngest brother. She threw everything from the trunk as she grabbed a few things; Huntington laughed loudly as she turned around with an eye patch over her right eye, a hook on her left hand and a pirates hat on her head. The boys laughed and clapped their hands excitedly as Renea began to tell the story that she had told them many times of Captain Hook.

Thirty minutes had gone and passed as Anna the dog came trotting into Renea's room; Anna always acted as the nanny. She bit at the loose end of Huntington's clothing, slowly pulling him off of her bed, and out of her bedroom. She listened as Anna barked commands at the little boy as Renea put the costumes away and followed Felix out of the room; she went right as he went left.

After cleaning her face off of the marker, Renea slowly made her way towards her brother's rooms; she waited by the open door, watching as Anna pulled the covers up to the boys chins with her mouth. As Anna trotted out of the room, Renea ran her fingers through the fur before kissing Felix's head first tonight. He whispered goodnight as he rolled over. Renea walked her way across the room to Huntington, grinning as he sat up in bed and wrapped his arms around her neck. "Daddy reminds me of Captain Hook, Ren," Renea snorted with laughter as she laid him back down.

"Don't worry, he won't hurt you," Renea whispered as she leaned down and kissed his cheek, he giggled as he ran his hand across his face. "Goodnight, Huntington."

Renea hummed as she made her way back into her bedroom, catching a boy with dark hair and red tints trying to rub his shadow onto his foot. "What are you doing?" she questioned with her eyebrow raised, he stood up quickly, holding the shadow behind him with a mischievous grin.

She watched him for awhile. "I'm Renea Ramsey, and you?" Renea smirked.

Renea watched as he sat his hands on his hips, and held his chest out proudly, "Peter Pan!"

"Well, Peter. You aren't going to to get your shadow back on by just rubbing it." She mumbled, making her way towards him. Renea grabbed thread and a needle from the drawer that the shadow had been locked in. She sat on her knees with the shadow in one hand and his foot in the other as she began to sow.

"Come to Neverland with me!" he blurted out, with a smile; her head snapped towards the boy with questioning eyes.

"I can't, I have my brothers Felix and Huntington." Pan's smile dropped slightly before it grew once more.

"They can come with us, Tink will wake them!" Renea watched as a blinding light raced from outside her window, into her bedroom, and down the hall. She watched for a few minutes before turning back towards Pan.

"That's awfully kind of you but I don't think we should," Renea mumbled.

"What's going on Ren?" Huntington sleepily mumbled, Renea turned around to see Tinkerbell sprinkle fairy dust on the boys but they didn't fly. They feel to the ground snoring heavily. Renea slapped Pan's feet out of her face and moving towards her brothers, but she wasn't quick enough as Pan grabbed her around her waist and Tinkerbell sprinkled her fairydust over Renea.

Renea slowly dropped to her knees, she could feel as her eyes became heavy and her head filled with grogginess before everything went black.
