Thirty Five
"Alright. I'll talk to you later. Thanks, dude." That was Tristan's voice when he entered my office.
He met my gaze and I managed a tight smile. He placed three boxes of pizza on the table and I shook my head.
I don't know what made him come over here to visit me but I'm glad that he did. And he came with pizzas too!
Typical Tristan.
Always the thoughtful guy.
"You never fail to make me smile, Stan." I chuckled when he began to open the box. I pressed the intercom and called Miss Valeen.
"Good afternoon, Sir Stan." Miss Valeen greeted him with a smile.
"Do you need anything, Miss Brit?"
"I need you to come and eat with us." I said to her and she immediately did so.
"Akala ko hindi ako makakatikim nyan eh! Kanina pa ako nagkecrave ng pizza!" Miss Valeen commented and me and Tristan chuckled.
As we ate, we started talking about our old friends and sometimes, engaged Ate Valeen in our conversation. Until, I asked her about her wedding which is expected in few months time.
"Hey, Ate Val... I haven't seen you taking a leave to prepare for your wedding. How is it? When are you getting married?" I turned to face her. Tristan eyed her and I gasped when tears sprung from her eyes.
"The w-wedding is off." She said, her voice quivering. She bit her lip to stop her tears from falling and I grabbed a tissue and handed it to her.
"I-i'm sorry. I don't know what to say." I said softly. I scooted closer and hugged her.
"Ang baho mo, Brit." She said, out of the blue, which I frowned at. I pulled from the embrace and sniffed on the collar of my blouse. I can still smell my Lacoste pink perfume. Tristan must have noticed it too and we both raised eyebrows.
"Buntis ka ba, Valeen?" He asked bluntly and it was Ate Valeen's turn to gasp.
For a while, I thought she's going to be offended but when she looked down and touched her tummy, I just knew right then, that she will open up to us.
"I-i don't know. Wala namang ibang nagbago sa routine ko... except, I get sleepy during breaktime and I eat too much than usual." She said slowly as if trying to recall everything in her memory.
"Did you have your period this month?" I asked and she paused for a while.
"I'm not due until this Saturday. Malalaman ko pa lang if I am delayed or not." She said thoughtfully. Unaware of what she's doing, she grabbed another slice of pizza and nibbled on it. That was actually her third slice while me and Tristan had two.
"Alright." I said. "Let me know para masamahan kita magpacheck-up ha. "
"You don't have to, Brit. I can do it. You don't need to bother." She shook her head after she devoured the slice she was holding.
"But I want to. Besides, I know someone who can be your OB Gyne, if ever, our instincts are right." I insisted and she sighed.
"Ano pa nga ba magagawa ko. What you want, you get." She said and I giggled.
"Mabuti alam mo." I winked and we laughed.
"Anyway, girls. How is your case doing? Have you discussed about it?" Tristan asked and sipped on the pepsi in his glass.
"Oh my gosh! I almost forgot!" Ate Valeen exclaimed. "I was able to find out who it was! Thanks to the Marites in our area!"
Both me and Tristan gasped in utter disbelief. Miss Valeen filled us in on the details and he gave us some things to consider about approaching the person without offending him. He also suggested consulting Yosef about it before making a move which me and Ate Val both agreed upon. Also, we have to have proofs before pointing hands at someone.
We ended our day after that and Tristan offered to take me home but I refused. I told him I still have to do some stuff before I went home.
I have the car with me so I was comfortable going home late at night. But what bothered and shook my world was when I saw a note on my windshield.
Curious, I took it and went inside my car. I made sure to lock my doors immediately and opened the aircon when I got in.
Sandejas,
Enjoy your life now. Soon, you'll be regretting it.
My heart raced when I read it. I quickly started my car engine and exhaled.
Hindi ako pwedeng magpadalos-dalos. I cannot just drive now.
Kailangan kong kumalma. Kung 'di mababangga ako at magkatotoo pa ang sinabi ng nagbabanta sa buhay ko.
I heaved a sigh and called for him.
Thank God, he just live close by.
I smiled when I saw him sitting comfortably on the driver's seat.
"Hey, B." He gestured a little wave and I approached his car.
"Thanks for coming, Cotton." I said.
"So, what happened?" He asked and maneuvered out of the parking lot as we leave my car behind. "What about your car?"
