"Best day ever"
I waited at the school billboard out front. I checked my cracked phone. 5:54...I leaned up against the billboard with a heavy sigh. Did he just juke me? Is Joseph going to tell everyone at school? That douche! I groan. I start to leave school property, until Joseph calls out. "Hey! Kit-Kat! Wait up!" Joseph shouted, jogging up to me. When he caught up to me, I scolded him. "What the hell? I know detention doesn't last the long!" Joseph laughs," Sorry for making you wait so long! The Super Intendant wanted to speak with me with.... Things..." I roll my eyes, not convinced. I decided not to pester him about it. I ask, irritated," Where are we going?" Joseph grins." Only the best of places!"Joseph said, walking across the street. I jog to catch up," That doesn't give me an answer, dimwit." Joseph just laughs it off.
"We're here!" Joseph shouts. I was so startled that I almost dropped my phone. I didn't bother to interact with Joseph, because I was pledging to avoid Joseph at all costs after today. Even if he did save me, I don't need him doing it again.
I give Joseph another glare, but he didn't notice. He was too busy staring in awe at the sign welcoming visitors to the building. One look at the sign you groan. "A nursing home?! No way I'm hanging out with a bunch of old people after school."I snapped. "Hey, their not that bad, one guy was a veteran, He's pretty cool."Joseph argued. I crossed my arms, giving him a look that I wasn't interested. Joseph sighed," Please! I promise you won't regret it! Please! They are awesome when you get to know them!" I rolled my eyes and debated whether I should or not. What if people at school saw me? Wait how could they see me if they weren't here too? I didn't have much time to choose, because Joseph had already grabbed my wrist and yanked me inside the door.
"Joseph! Honey! Good to see you! Roger has been nagging me about your next visit! Oh!," The African-American woman stopped giving Joseph a hug and looked at me," And who's this?" I questionably looked at Joseph, wondering how she knew him that much to embrace him. Joseph noticed and smiled at the woman," Oh Marie, this is Catherine. Catherine, meet Marie." Oh thank god.. He didn't tell that poor soul my horrible nick-name. I tried to smile at Marie, but it didn't work out so well. She probably didn't think highly of me from the first look at me anyway. Well who could blame her? My one lone purple streak through my brown long hair and my dark smokey eye isn't very promising.. Joseph nudged me with his elbow and a gave him a warning look. He raised his hands playfully in surrender, and chuckled. Marie smiled, but I could tell she was getting bad vibes from me.
Marie led us into the main lounge where they mostly "hung out". I trudged the whole way there. Joseph walked happily, and just laughed at my boredom. Laugh at me one more time Joseph, and it will be the last thing you do..
"Joseph!" An old man said, jumping up from his worn grey sofa chair, reaching out for a hug. Joseph joyfully accepted his affection. "Roger!" Joseph laughed. I stood there, dumbfounded as usual. Roger smiled as he looked at me," Oh! And you've brought a girl!" He winks at Joseph. Joseph blushes, but laughs it off. I roll my eyes, but was blushing just a smidge. Roger sat down and waved us over towards the two empty seats on the couch across from him. The elderly seemed excited yet pleased to have some young visitors. They seemed to not care about my appearance. An old skinny lady next to me smiled brightly, even though she didn't have real teeth. I smiled back. After situating, Joseph spoke," Roger, tell Catherine about your journeys on the field." Roger nodded.
"So how was it?" Joseph asked, leaning in towards me. I rolled my eyes again, but smiled. Having his satisfaction Joseph grinned," Told ya."
I kicked a rock, mad that I was wrong about his idea. I actually had a great time, with Roger's breathtaking adventures, watching and competing a woman's skills at some Chess and all the nice nurses with one exception,( ahem* Marie ahem*) but, there was still one thing...
"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone, if you promise not to mention I visit there twice a month." Joseph admitted. I stifle a laugh. "Woah! You laughed! I must've hit my head playing limbo.."Joseph said, surprised. I elbow him, and he cringed. "Remind me never to mess with you." Joseph muttered. I roll my eyes," That's not what I was going to ask." Joseph looked curious, so I continued. "Well it seemed like the nurses and residents knew you. How come?" Joseph looked away, slightly embarrassed to say what was coming out. He took a deep sigh," Well I was homeschooled for a while, and sometimes after "school " I would visit." I raise an eyebrow. "Seriously? Homeschooled?" I ask. Joseph laughs, "yeah.." I chuckle a little.
Suddenly, I remembered I had to be home at 8:00. If I got in trouble by my mother, there would be hell to pay, literally. "Hey! What time is it?!?"I shouted, unnecessarily. Joseph, alarmed from listening to music through earbuds, frantically checked his phone for the clock. "7:57." Shit! I started running. I didn't look back at Joseph. I didn't want to get in trouble. And, it's not like he'll never see me again. I don't know if Joseph was calling me or not, because all I heard for three minutes was my panting and me worn tennis shoes hitting the ground.
