Chapter 1
"Oh, come on, it's been like eleven days sense she was born. Isn't that past the day kits are supposed to?" said Featherheart.
"Be quiet, Featherheart," replied Waterwing, "She'll open them when she wants to."
"But, Lightningkit opened his eyes this morning and mine opened theirs from the day they joined the clan, Mudkit and Blackkit are already natural warriors." said Featherheart.
"Ha-ha, oh Featherheart, we all know that no kit can compete with your two," said Dawnflower.
"Mousekit, come on, I want to go outside but Waterwing said that I can't until you open your eyes."
"Shhh." Waterwing told her son.
'Lightningkit' Mousekit thought.
"She'll open her eyes when she's ready."
Waking, Mousekit could feel the weight of her brother laying on top of her, Waterwing's belly rose and fell in a pattern beside them, Featherheart was snoring, and Dawnflower wheezed a tiny bit as she breathed. Mousekit heard Mudkit and Blackkit playing outside, "Okay, you be the vole and I will be the warrior." Mudkit yowled.
"Hey," mewed Blackkit, "I was the vole last time we played."
"No you weren't."
"I was too." Mousekit could hear them tumbling outside.
"Oomph," they both said at the same time as they rammed into a warrior.
"Hey! Watch where you're rolling!" he said.
"Oops, we're sorry," Blackkit replied.
"Okay, fine you can be the warrior, but you won't be able to catch me!" Mudkit said after they left the warrior.
'Warrior' Mousekit thought 'I'm going to be a warrior.'
Slowly, she opened her eyes, letting them adjust to the sunlight, "Lightningkit!" she whispered.
"Uhh, what?" he said as he climbed over Waterwing. He gasped, "What is it?" Mousekit said.
"Your eyes, they're open, and there blue, like the sky, while mine are plain, old brown." He said with a sad tone.
"Well, you're golden with brown eyes." replied Mousekit
"And you are the splitting image of your father," came a new voice. Mousekit turned around and seen that their mother was watching them. Waterwing's eyes got big and said "except you have blue eyes."
"Can Lightningkit and I go outside?" Mousekit asked.
Waterwing replied, "Why?"
"Mudkit and Blackkit are outside," replied Lightningkit.
"Mudkit and Blackkit are 4 moons old and they are much bigger than you, so they are allowed to go outside." Waterwing said.
"Why not?" Lightningkit asked.
"Umm, I don't know,"
"so we can go then."
"I guess you will have to leave the nursery sometime, off you two go." Mousekit and Lightningkit jumped through the bramble wall.
'Wow,' Mousekit thought. She looked around and saw prey stacked on top of each other.
"That's the fresh-kill pile," said Lightningkit. Mousekit walked over to it and found a juicy mouse. She opened her mouth to pick it up.
"Watch out!" Lightningkit warned her. But he was too late a squirrel fell on her head. Mousekit fell to the ground under the squirrel's weight. She heard two cats start to laugh.
"Oh my gosh, have you ever seen a Fresh-kill attack a cat before?" one said.
"Be careful that squirrel might try to choke you!" said the other.
"It didn't attack me, it fell on me!" Mousekit yowled.
"Hey!" came a new voice. Lightningkit and Mousekit turned around to see two cats close to their size stood in front of them. "What are you two doing out here?" said the bigger one.
"Waterwing told us we could go outside," said Mousekit.
"We could never go outside at your age, right Blackkit," said the smaller cat. Blackkit looked at her brother.
"Your right Mudkit. We never got to go outside of the nursery the day we opened our eyes, you two are lucky." Blackkit said.
"Maybe Featherheart was just too protective of us," replied Mudkit, "Hey, while you guys are out here, we can show you around."
"That is a great idea!" Lightningkit almost yowled.
"Okay, let's go." Blackkit, Mudkit, and Lightningkit walked towards a den that was made of leaves and twigs, Mousekit hurried after them.
"This is the Warriors Den; you would sleep here after you're an apprentice,"Mudkit said.
"Can we go in?" asked Mousekit.
"You can if you want to, but you'll get in trouble," said Blackkit as she walked away with her brother. Mousekit looked at Lightningkit and then they both jumped into the bracken.
"Hi Ravenpaw!" said Blackkit.
"Hi Blackkit, hi Mudkit, what are you doing?" replied Ravenpaw.
"We are showing Lightningkit and Mousekit around the camp." said Mudkit.
Ravenpaw looked around for the two kits. "Where are they?" said she said. Blackkit and Mudkit spun around and seen that Mousekit and Lightningkit were not behind them.
"Where did they go?" asked Blackkit.
"The Warriors Den!" yowled Mudkit.
"What do you mean the Warriors Den?" Ravenpaw asked.
"They asked if they could go in and check it out."
"What did you say to them?" asked Ravenpaw.
"We said 'you can, if you want to get in trouble!'"
"You can't say that to almost newborn kits! All they would have heard would be 'yes, you can'!" yowled Ravenpaw as she raced to the other side of camp.
Mousekit and Lightningkit went around the den. 'How do all the warriors fit in here?' Mousekit thought. They looked through the leaves and seen the entire camp. "Wow, the camp is huge," Lightningkit whispered.
"What are you doing in here?" came a new voice. Lightningkit and Mousekit spun around to see a warrior with a bright red pelt with black ears and paws.
"I said what are you doing here?"
"W...we were exploring," Lightningkit stuttered. The warrior looked thoughtfully at them.
"Are you Waterwing's kits?"
"Yes, we are, I'm Mousekit and this is my brother, Lightningkit."
"Are you looking for Iceheart?"
"No, we weren't," Lightningkit replied.
"I'm Foxpelt, just so you know."
Blackkitand Mudkit ran after Ravenpaw as she ran to the Warriors Den. When they gotthere, they seen Mousekit and Lightningkit being pushed out of the Warriors Denby Foxpelt. "Thank goodness you two are okay. We're so sorry Foxpelt; we shouldhave paid more attention to if they were following us," said Blackkit quickly.
"It's fine, I was going to get up and eat anyway," Foxpelt said and walkedaway.
"We told you, that you were going to get in trouble!"
"We're sorry," saidMousekit.
"It's okay. Oh...this is Ravenpaw, she's an apprentice. She sleeps inthe Apprentice Den, all the way over there. We will sleep there in about 2 moons."Blackkit said.
"Won't Featherheart miss you?" Lightningkit asked.
"Of courseshe will, but all kits have to become apprentices someday," Mudkit said.
