chapter sixteen
—𝐀𝐧𝐲𝐚 splits off from the group, heading off into the thick of the market. She scans the crowds, looking for their target. Granted she got lost in the pretty trinkets, she mostly kept her eyes out. Anya pocketed a few of the cute necklaces, one of them was a daisy. She thought it would go well with the yellow daisies she had placed in her hair. Anya headed back to the Tavern, deciding she needed a drink after her little search. Kaz noticed the necklaces adorning her neck and sticking out of her pockets, but didn't say a word, knowing she likes shiny things. Anya shot down her drink like nothing, enjoying the burn that came with it.
Inej snuck into the tavern and sat at the table where Anya was sitting next to Kaz with his arm around her chair. "No horses missing at the stables, so..."
"So?"
"What?"
"Are you going to tell me how the target got away?" Kaz asks Inej.
Inej takes a deep breath, "I let her go."
"Oh Inej." Anya whispers.
"You were hired to do a job."
"Yes, the job was to pick up a fake for an easy million kruge. We found a living Saint who can summon the sun."
"She is not a saint, just powerful." Anya interjects.
Kaz takes out a coin. "A good magician is a good con artist. The trick..." Kaz pulls his hands together and the coin disappears. "Is to make it look real."
"How in the bay?" Anya whispers to herself.
"This is different." Inej says. "You saw her summon with your own eyes."
"The best illusions are the most convincing. That's the game." Kaz leans back on the chair, hands placed on his cane.
"You can hide behind your cynicism, but I believe she's the real thing."
"I don't see you falling to your knees to worship every Heartrender or Squaller we meet."
"I'll get on my knees for you." Anya snarks under her breath. Kaz sends her a look.
"This is different. Her power is a miracle. I won't betray my faith."
"Pious as that may be, we cannot work effectively as a crew if you're making decisions based on religious zeal." Anya raises her eyebrows, staying out of whatever the hell is going on in front of her eyes.
"Is that a threat to return me to Heleen?"
"Either we get the target of Heleen gets the Crow Club and Pekka get's whatever's left."
"Wait. Why would Heleen get the Crow Club?" Kaz looks down, before getting up. "Kaz." Inej doesn't get an answer, so she looks towards Anya.
"Nope." Anya gets up and walks after Kaz, hoping to calm him down. Anya follows him to their room, his brooding getting in the way of her talking to him. "Kaz. She was going to find out at some point." Kaz sends her a look. "Honestly, we should have just stopped. Inej was never going to give up her religion. We all knew that and proceeded to ignore it. I don't get why—" Anya's cut off by Kaz kissing her.
Slightly shocked, she takes a moment to kiss back. Once she does, it turns heated. Clothes are dumped onto the ground, bodies bumping into the furniture, small laughs leaving their lips every time. The two fall back onto the bed, removing each other of the single pieces of clothes that separate their bodies. Molding together like clay, the two of them move in ways in which they can see the stars, almost reaching out and touching them. Sweat dripping down their skin, the other not caring, too enamored in the way their bodies move and cling to each other. Panting when they separate, only falling onto the bed for the moment before they take a bath.
Anya's legs tremble when she walks, leaning on Kaz for support. The two exchange sweet kisses as they wait for the bath to finish running. The smell of lavender infiltrating their sense of smell, calming them. Small inside jokes being exchanged, small laughs being enticed, the two were in perfect harmony. Their souls bled for each other, fighting against everything to be together. Sinking into the warm water, Anya pressed her back against Kaz's chest. His arms winding around her stomach, pulling her closer to him. He places kisses on each of the marks he had left littered on her skin, finally resting his head in the crook of her neck. Anya runs her fingers through his hair, combing through the small tangles.
An evil grin stretches across her face. Anya reaches down into the water and flicks it up into Kaz's face. He sputters, sending her a look, before dunking her down under the water. Anya comes up with her hair clinging to her face. She sends Kaz a look - one that scares him - and fills up the pitcher on the side with water. He holds his hands up in surrender, but she pays no attention, pouring the water over his head. Kaz grabs her by her hips, pulling her into him, tickling her sides. Anya sequels with laughter, her lungs running out of air. She leans down and kisses him, effectively getting him to stop tickling her. He kisses back, making the first move in intertwining their bodies yet again.

Hours had passed by, and the two had moved from their room to the main part of the tavern. The once bustling crowd has diminished, leaving people scattered amongst the tavern, the noise had been left to almost nothing. Anya enjoyed the quiet, it allowed her to drift off into sleep. Kaz had to nudge her every few moments, keeping her awake. Around Anya's body, Kaz looked at his watch. Jesper placed his bag on the table, Kaz and Anya looked up.
"The alarm trigger is set." Kaz puts away his watch, checking in Anya once again. "Horses are ready and I've stashed the rest of our gear."
"If we don't move soon, the Black General will be on top of us."
"He's no good." Anya mumbles.
"What's up with her?" Jesper questions.
"She's tired. Keeps falling asleep." Kaz says. He shakes Anya once again.
"Stop it." She smacks his hand away. "I'm up."
"We can't waste anymore time looking for the girl."
Inej sits down at the table, "I just settled our tab with the last of our coin."
"We're really gonna leave empty-handed, then?"
"Apparently." Anya says. An explosion goes off. The group turns their head towards the sound for a moment before looking at each other.
"Our alarm." Jesper informs.
"Split up, much easier to take a Grisha one-on-one than a whole squad of them." They stand up, throwing on their coats. "Rendezvous at the fountain." The walk out of the tavern, Anya places Kaz's hat on her head. They go to walk down the path, only to spot Grisha coming towards them. One of the Inferni takes a look at Anya's knives, noticing the design.
"No!" Polina, the Inferni shouts.
"Move!" Kaz orders. Anya turns to Kaz, pressing a kiss to his lips. "Stay safe."
"Always do, Bastard." Anya replies, heading off. Polina throws fire at her body, causing her to sprint, jumping through a hole in a stonewall. Anya springs into the first building she sees, noticing it has lots of pipes, she curses. She hides behind one of the larger ones, hearing the footsteps of the Inferni. She moves from her spot, using her stealth as an advantage. Anya charges towards the Inferni, swiping her knife. The Inferni manages to block all of her blows, stopping Anya from placing the blade in her skull.
"You robbed me of my brother, now I'll rob you of your life."
"Yeah, well, he tried to kill my man. I'd say he deserved what he got." Anya doesn't leave any chance at a reply, she twists her body, forcing her back into the Inferni's chest. She removes herself from her hold, turning around and throwing her knife at the Inferni. The knife bounces off, "Ketterdam Bay! Screw Keftas!" She twists, just barely missing the fire being thrown at her. The fire hits a pipe, causing it to blow, sending Anya into the pipes behind her. Anya looks down, seeing blood seep through her clothes. "Oh that's nice." Smoke gathers around the room, allowing Anya to move away silently. She watches as the Inferni lights a fire in her hands, the Inferni turns around, right where Anya is crouched. Taking the advantage, she lodges her knife into the Inferni's heart. "I'd wait until a Healer is close by before you pull this out. Or... you'll bleed out in 30 seconds."
The Inferni gasps, "Ketterdam trash. I will track you down, and kill everyone you love, and then... you."
"In that case... I'll take my knife back." Anya has a wicked glint in her eye as she pulls the knife out the Inferni's chest, watching as she falls at her feet. When she hits the ground Anya gasps in pain, grabbing her wound to stop the blood. She limps out of the room, trying to get the fountain before she passes out. She spots the trio waiting for her, so she jumps down, letting out a pained grunt as she does.
"Anya." Kaz is by her side immediately.
"Hey." Jesper whispers, gathered on her other side.
"The Inferni, she's dead." Kaz nods, placing a kiss on her forehead. "Shouldn't have tried to threaten me."
"Well, you can't manage a horse. Not even riding double."
"Really Jesper, I had no idea."
"Okay! Calm down! We'll have to come up with another plan."
"Saints." Inej says, taking out a cloth, placing it on the wound.
"That's a pretty nice ride." Kaz looks towards the General's carriage.
"Yes, indeed it is." Kaz hands Anya off to Inej, allowing him to sneak around the other side. Jesper, Inej, and Anya walk slowly towards the carriage. Anya and Inej watch as Jesper opens the doors. "Oh. Hello." The man in the purple kefta throws his book at Jesper. Anya chuckles only to wince in pain. She watches through the door as Kaz whacks the man on the head with his cane. "He threw a book at me."
"It was funny." Jesper throws Anya a look. Kaz hops in the carriage with Anya, while Jesper and Inej hop on top, directing the horses. Kaz holds the fabric to her wound. "You whacking him with that cane is about the most useful thing it does."
"It helps me walk."
"I know." Kaz flicks her temple, Anya screws up her face in response.
"You're going to be fine. Trust me."
"I always do Kaz Brekker."
