Chapter 7 - Loss
Matt pulled up to Freddy's, looking into the backseat. "You kids ready?" He asked them. They all cheered.
"Now, are you sure you'll be able to stay?" Asked Stephanie.
"I'm off work today. I promise." He said. He opened up the car door, holding it open for Stephanie as if he were a limo driver. The kids, meanwhile, were practically climbing over each other, all except Jake, who stayed huddled in the back.
"Hey buddy." Said Matt. "You don't want to go to your own party?" Jake shook hi head no.
"Come on, sweetie, it'll be fine." Stephanie took his hand, as Jake reluctantly got out of the car. "I think he's afraid of the animitronics." She whispered to Matt.
"Oh, in that case..." Matt squatted down to meet Jake's eyes. "You know what Mr. Smith told me?" Asked Matt. Jake shook his head. "Don't be afraid, they just want to say hi." Jake paused, but then nodded slowly and cautiously walked in.
"You got that from Nate?" Asked Stephanie as they walked in.
"Yeah, he told me when we took Luke, Libby, and Peyton." Matt said.
"That Nate is a miracle worker, then." But then she paused randomly. "Matt, do you think there's something going on with Libby and the animitronics? She always seems so... entranced by them. Like they're hypnotizing her. She can't stay away from them."
"Maybe she just likes them a lot." Matt brushed it off, and so did Stephanie.
Later...
"Nate!" Matt waved over to him. Nate was watching the younger kids, although it was honestly overkill so Nate looked over to them. Steph and Nate went over to him to talk.
"Thanks for inviting Luke. I mean, he'll forget to say it, so I might as well say it for him." But as the parents casually chatted away, the kids were up to something far worse.
"Please let me out!" Jake was crying.
"Come on, don't you love the robots?!" Luke was laughing at him, while he and his four friends, including Peyton, held the door closed. Libby had gone to play with another girl that she met at the party, one of the older kids little sister.
"I'm not scared!" Jake tried to yell out. But the boys just kept laughing.
Meanwhile, Nate was talking to Matt and Steph. "Did you hear that my boss died?" He asked.
"What? No, what happened?" Asked Matt.
"Oh, turns out that he's actually had cancer for a long time. But anyway, word has gone down the wire that he left Freddy's to a friend of his. Apparently, he left his will to the last second, and left Freddy's to a guy from work." Nate explained. But Nate already had his suspicions. His boss had to have left the place to Phone Guy. He knew everything about the place, plus on the phone he talked like a caring father, so he had to be good with kids. And Matt was afraid of that too. "One of the guys told me that it's getting released at noon exactly. Something about the lawyers."
Matt checked with watch. 11:58. Oh no. He thought. "Stephanie, we have to talk." He grabbed her hand and practically dragged her away.
One of the boys holding the door finally fell, and Jake ran through the open door of the storage room, falling onto his face. Jake looked up in fear. All the boys were wearing masks. Peyton had a foxy mask, Luke had a Freddy mask, and the other boys were wearing Chica, Bonnie, and most disturbingly, a homemade mask that resembled the creepy puppet.
"Wow, your brother is kind of a baby, isn't he?" Asked one of the boys jokingly, while Jake sat crying.
"It's hilarious!" Laughed Luke.
"Jake just LOVES the robots, right?" Peyton poked him.
"Why don't we help him get a closer look? He will love it!" Luke laughed. *Side Note: Scott, this dialogue. No kid, teen, or toddler ever says "He will." I'll give it a pass this once, but seriously.*
"No! Please!" Jake cried.
"Come on, you big baby!" Teased one of the other boys.
"Don't be afraid, they just want to say hi! That's what Dad had to tell you, right?" Peyton teased him, too.
"I'm not afraid!" Jake cried, even though even he knew it wasn't true.
"Hear that? He's not afraid! He's a little man now!" One of the boys gave him a little push.
"Come on, guys, let's give this little man a lift. He wants to get up close and personal!" Luke, despite his age, was not only much taller than the other boys, but also much stronger, and was able to lift up Jake's legs, while Peyton held Jake's arms. Jake's middle section was dragging on the ground, but combined, all the boys were able to lift him up.
Matt kept staring at his watch. 11:59. "Matthew, what's wrong?" She asked. Matt took her into the back hallway, away from the kids.
"There's something I didn't tell you." He started. "I broke my promise."
"Matt, what are you talking about? Which promise?" Then it hit her. "No." Her jaw dropped slightly. "You work here?" She asked.
"I'm sorry! I was worried, and I wanted to take care of you all, and-" Matt rambled on, but Stephanie stopped him.
"So this is what you do all night? You used to spend time with the kids at night, but now you're disapearing. I get it. If you really wanted to take care of us, of them, then you would have finally spent time with them!" She yelled.
"I'm sorry that I'm trying to make a living!" He yelled back.
"You have enough money to make a living! This is just extra!" As they fought, Jake was lead closer to the stage area, where a springlock Golden Freddy suit was performing, but it was in animitronic mode.
"No!" He cried. "I don't want to go!"
"You heard the little man! He wants to get even closer!" Luke was laughing wildly at Jake's horror. The boys brought Jake all the way over to the stage, right in front of the Golden Freddy.
"Matt, I asked you, almost begged you, to just let me take care of things. Just this once. Could you not trust me or something?" She asked, arms folded.
"I do trust you, I was just trying to help." Matt tried his best to protest. "I'm sorry."
From across the room, Nate could see the boys holding Jake. Jake was crying, right next to a springtrap suit. Phone Guy had told him what happens when a springlock suit gets wet. Jake could die if he, for some reason, got caught in the crossfire.
"Matt!" He yelled sharply. But their fighting distracted them from seeing to their son. "Matt!"
"Hey guys, I think the little man said that he wants to give Freadbear a big kiss!" Luke told everyone in the group. Jake was crying loudly, but all the parents were distracted by their own crying children.
Nate connected the dots. Jake crying, going near the animitronic's mouth, Jake would die. Nate ran forward, dodging the children.
"So will you get the resturant?" Stephanie asked, armed folded angrily.
"I don't know..." Matt trailed off. Then his phone beeped. Matt looked down. His data was on, and he had gotten an e-mail. Matt checked the time. 12:00.
"On three!" Luke started, getting the other boys wound up.
Matt opened up the e-mail. "He left Freddy's to me." Matt looked up at Stephanie, a shocked look plastered across her face.
"One..." Luke and the boys prepared to lift Jake up.
"Jake!" Nate was only halfway through the dining room. There wouldn't be enough time.
"Two..."
"Three!" The boys lifted Jake up to the animitronic's mouth, but Jake's head got stuck. He wouldn't stop crying. At first, the boys laughed. Until the tears made the springlocks fail. The mouth snapped shut onto Jake, crushing his head, and killing him.
The noise echoed across the dining hall. Everyone was in shock, at first, until the children started to cry. "Get everyone out, now!" Nate yelled to another employee. They employees got all the children and parents out, while Nate ran forward, practically shoving his own son out of the way.
Nate pried open the jaws and pulled out Jake's body. The boy's head was crushed, a bloody, mangled mess. Matt and Stephanie ran out of the hallway.
Nate was on the ground, holding the body of their son. Bits of blood and flesh were stuck in the animitronic's teeth.
"I'm so sorry." He said. To Stephanie's surprise, Matt walked out of the shock and forward first. He knelt down in front of Nate. Nate gently gave Jake's body to Matt, who started to cry.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." Matt said over and over again, eyes welling up with tears. But then, somewhere deep inside, he snapped. It was a small snap, but it was there. "You're broken." He cried, then he quietly whispered to his son, "I will put you back together."
