Chapter 4 - Test Run
Matt had decided not to work from home, as to not alert Stephanie that he broke his promise. Instead, he found a room beside the office, that no one had gotten to yet. He asked his boss, named David, why it was there. David had said that he had no clue why, but the animitronics couldn't find it, and it couldn't be found on the cameras.
David had told him that one of the night guards had been alerted that Matt was having his tryout with him. Matt was ready, watching the office through a small hole in the wall. But he was utterly horrified when Nate was the one who walked in.
That's right, Nate's only been working here for four days. He still has a few things to learn. But if he hears my voice, he'll recognize me. Which means he'll tell Stephanie. And if I tell Nate that I broke a promise, then it'll have to make it's way around to Stephanie. What the heck am I supposed to do?
That was when Matt saw a Freddy head. It had a voice changer on the inside, to make the actor sound more like what Freddy would. But even if he used that, his voice would be obviously faked. That would have to freak Nate out. So Matt had another idea. He took a pen on the desk, and jammed it into the voice changer. He tested it out. The voice was a little strange, but it would work. If all else failed, he could play it off as the weirdest cold ever.
Matt called up the phone. "Hello? Hello, Hello? Um... so, hi, I'm uh.... Phone Guy." Matt face palmed.
"Um... really? That's your name?" Nate almost giggled, but held it back.
"Well, uh, yeah. So I've been told to train you. At least until the end of the week." Matt explained.
"So... today and tomorrow?" Asked Nate.
"Y-Yeah, pretty much. But I've been told you already know your stuff."
"Well, not everything yet. I have never seen this mechanic before." Said Nate.
"Which mechanic?"
"This music box. What am I supposed to do?" Asked Nate.
"Oh that thing. It keeps The Puppet sleeping." Matt explained nonchalantly.
"The Puppet?" Asked Nate.
"Over in the prize corner. In the box. The music box keeps it asleep. Some moron forgot to wind it up at my daughter's third birthday party, scared everyone. I'll be honest, I never liked that Puppet thing. It's always... thinking, and it can go anywhere."
"Comforting..." Nate trailed off.
"I think it just wants to protect the other animitronics. I think it hates me, specifically." Matt flashed back to Libby's party. The Puppet actually attacked him. Nate was silent. "You probably won't have to worry about it, though."
The night went on as planned, until an alarm started ringing. "Oh no." Matt started.
"What?" Then Nate saw. "Oh." He had forgotten to wind the music box. "What's going to happen?" Asked Nate, a little panicked. Right at that moment, the limp, motionless puppet fell from the ceiling, it's arms and legs folded under it's body. It wasn't moving. Nate slowly made his way over to it.
Then it sprung up. Nate jumped back, screaming. "Calm down!" Matt yelled. But honestly, he was afraid too. Even if the animitronics were all docile, this one had attacked him in the past.
Nate crawled underneath the desk, screaming. The Puppet was getting closer to him. It reached out it's strange, almost claw-like hands out to Nate. The "fingers" touched Nate's face, but Nate backed himself further into the corner, completely panicked. Matt was lost. He had no clue what to do. This could go too many ways for him to predict. The Puppet could kill Nate or it could do nothing and both of them would look like idiots. Then Matt remembered the one thing he didn't know.
Matt took a deep breath and calmed himself down before addressing Nate. "Don't be afraid, they just want to say hi." He told him. Right then, Nate remembered his own words as he straightened up and sat back down. The Puppet creepily stared at Nate while he worked, which made Nate a little nervous, but with Matt's help, he was able to hold on.
Eventually, Bonnie, Chica, and Freddy all showed up in the office. "Hi, new guy!" Said Chica. The Puppet inched closer to Nate. He gulped. "Hello, you guys." He said.
Freddy looked over. "You met our friend! This is the Puppet! Puppet, this is our new friend! He's the night guard!"
The Puppet made its way over to Nate. Nate wanted to back away in fear again, but he remembered his own words this time. The Puppet reached out it's long arm to Nate, as if it was offering its hand. Nate shook it cautiously, then smiled.
"By the way..." Nate addressed all of the animitronics, not just the Puppet. "My name is Nate. It's nice to finally know you all."
