[Chapter 10] 2 Months of Peace

Rhea walked through the hut to the outside courtyard, where she had gathered the scorpions again today. This time, she was actually excited to see them. Sitting down on the makeshift throne, she glanced at the crowd around her. They were all confused as to why they were called.

"Good morning. Today we will be getting quite a few things sorted. If you can't stand, please feel free to sit; this might take a while. First things first, anyone who can read or write, please step forward."

Three scorpion beast men stepped out, followed by Korrin. The crowd murmured in surprise, their eyes fixed on the four figures.

"Now," Rhea continued, "I want everyone to vote for who they want as their leader."

The scorpions exchanged puzzled glances. Korrin stepped forward, looking directly at Rhea. "What do you mean, Rhea? You are our Queen."

Rhea smiled. "I will remain your queen, but someone needs to be the official ruler, someone who can relate to you all. I will still be here as Queen, but this person will be the Scorpion King independently. They will become my mate publicly too. Now, anyone who thinks they deserve this position should step up to the podium."

A ripple of surprise ran through the crowd. Nik stepped up this time, joining Korrin and the others. Rhea remained unphased as she observed the candidates.

The voting process began with the scorpions murmuring among themselves. The candidates each spoke briefly, sharing their vision for the tribe and their commitment to its prosperity. The scorpions cast their votes, they were instructed to draw lines, with the number of lines corresponding to the beastman they were voting for. The votes were collected and tallied.

As the results were read aloud, it became clear that there was a tie between Nik and Korrin. The crowd buzzed with excitement and curiosity. If not them who? The most powerful and the former King, Rhea made a mental note of the other educated beastmen silently.

Rhea called Nik and Korrin aside for a private conversation. "If you become kings, you will not be able to have a mate, and I may never mate with you. If you are not okay with that and want a chance at love, you should give up being King." They would be her mate in the public eye, but they will not mark her; that way, they could step down if they found someone they liked, but to become king, they cannot mate with other females.

Both men remained standing, their expressions resolute. Rhea looked at them, searching their faces for any hint of doubt.

Korrin spoke first. "When I was King, I never took a female because I was dedicated to providing for everyone. I can continue to do that."

Nik nodded. "I have no need for love. My priority is the tribe."

Rhea studied them for a moment before smiling. "You can always change your mind and step down if you find someone you like. But for now, you will both be joint Kings."

The announcement was met with murmurs of approval from the crowd. The scorpions seemed pleased with the decision, recognising the strength of both leaders.

"Next," Rhea said, raising her voice to be heard over the crowd, "the Black Wind tribe will become a point-based system tribe. Points will be earned by contribution, and resources will be distributed accordingly."

The scorpions listened intently.

"All two-marked beasts and above, please step forward," Rhea continued.

A group of scorpions moved forward, standing proudly. It was a minority but it was a start.

"You have no need to train further. You can choose a craft, to hunt, or to work in agriculture," Rhea explained.

The scorpions discussed among themselves before making their choices. Some chose crafts, others chose hunting, wanting to provide food and resources for the tribe. The rest chose agriculture, interested in growing and maintaining crops.

"Those who choose to hunt for the tribe will have the first pick at food provided and will be paid more points as it is a dangerous job." She made sure they all understood and were satisfied with their decisions.

Rhea then turned to the one-marked beasts. "You will remain in training until you become two-marked, and then you can choose your vocation."

The one-marked beasts nodded in understanding, a tribe with lots of high marked beasts would surely thrive.

"Those who chose crafts can choose to join our new healer association and become apprentices of Harvey," Rhea announced. "The others will be under the wing of Korrin, who will also oversee the agricultural division. Korrin will ensure the infrastructure in the village is maintained and updated. We will make things to sell and begin breeding colossals. Korrin will also be in charge of trade with other villages and improving our reputation."

Breeding Colossals? Everyone looked at Korrin but he remained unphased and so they all felt confident, if Korrin thought it could be done, then it could be done.

Rhea then turned to Nik. "Since you are a four-marked beast, you will be in charge of hunting, training the one-marked, and the protection of the village."

Nik accepted the responsibility.

Rhea finished her announcements with a firm voice. "My job as Queen is to make sure no one can look down on the Black Wind tribe. Together, we will make this tribe strong and respected and so in the future, when a female does relocate here, she will be proud to call this place her home."

The beastmen cheered, their voices echoing through the courtyard. If she explained it in terms of reputation and females they would understand.

"Today marks a new beginning for us all," Rhea said, her voice carrying over the crowd.

The scorpions straightened, their attention fully on Rhea.

"First, let's start with those who can read and write," Rhea announced. "You three will be the backbone of our administration. Your duty will be to keep records, manage resources, teach the others and ensure communication within and outside the tribe is clear and effective."

The three scorpions, nodded solemnly.

"I want each of you to focus on a specific area," Rhea continued. "One of you will manage internal affairs, another will oversee resource management, and the third will handle education. Decide among yourselves who will take on each role."

The three scorpions huddled together, discussing in low voices. It took a few minutes, but soon they had assigned themselves to the different roles, each nodding in agreement.

"Good," Rhea said, acknowledging their decision. "Now, let's address the point system."

She pulled out a large board that Harvey had crafted, displaying various tasks and their corresponding point values. The scorpions leaned in, curious to see the system that would govern their new lives.

"Every contribution you make to the tribe will earn you points," Rhea explained. "These points can be exchanged for resources, privileges, and even opportunities to learn new skills or crafts. The more you contribute, the more you earn."

"To give you an idea," Rhea continued, pointing to the board, "hunting a colossal will earn you a significant amount of points. Teaching a skill, completing a building project, or harvesting crops also earn points. Every task has value, and every effort is recognised."

Nik raised a question. "And what about those who slack off or don't contribute as much?"

Rhea met his gaze steadily. "There will be consequences for not contributing, but we will also offer support to help everyone find their role. No one will be left behind. If someone struggles, we will find a way to help them improve."

Nik nodded.

Rhea continued, "Now, let's talk about our two-marked beasts and above. You've chosen your fields, and you will lead by example. Show the one-marked what it means to contribute and earn their place."

The two-marked beasts puffed up with pride, eager to take on their new roles.

"Thank you all," Rhea said, her voice steady and full of conviction. "Let's begin this new chapter together."

As the scorpions began to disperse, Rhea stepped down from her makeshift throne, feeling relief. She had mulled over the system of governance this tribe should have. Ultimately they were not big enough to constitute a town, and so this was the best for now. Hopefully they will adopt voting their King in for the next few generations. Curtis and Harvey approached her, their faces beaming with pride.

"You did great," Curtis said, wrapping his tail around her.

Harvey nodded. "They're ready to follow you, Rhea. We're all ready."

Rhea smiled, feeling fuzzy from all the support. "This is just the beginning. We have a lot of work to do." In two months, she promised Muir to celebrate Christmas together, so in 2 months, she would try her best to set up the beastmen for hibernation.

A/N: I'm turn on writing some slice of life stuff for the next few chapters or move on with the plot at beast city, what would you prefer?
