Runaways (Madly)
Preston didn't talk to me the entire way home. He didn't even question the suitcase I had or the fact that we were in the parking lot of his condo complex. When we got out of the car, he just stood there, watching the driver drive away. As soon as the car had turned the corner, he sprinted. He ran off. And I was not expecting that.
"PRESTON WAIT!" I shouted after him. I began to run after him. I didn't think I was going to be able to catch him until he turned to look back at me. When he did though, he ran in to a maybe teenaged girl, and they both fell, Preston landing on top of her. Kind of. He had held himself up with his arms before he fell on the ground, but the girl was knocked over non the less.
"Preston!" I ran up to him and saw him sit up, helping the girl up. I focused my attention on him, assuming the kid's parent would come to them or something. I gave Preston a hug and felt my shirt get wet from his tears for the second time that day. "I won't hurt you, I promise. You don't need to run, and its just dangerous if you do. Marisol can take you back and-"
"A-are you Prestonplayz?" I heard the girl ask from behind me, my back facing her. I felt him nod and wipe his cheeks. "My sister and I used to watch you together all the time. She called herself TBNRFraggess when she was younger because she was lowkey obsessed with you, haha." She spoke as if she didn't see the tears on his fa- wait.
I felt myself stiffen and take in a short breath at the name. Oh my god. I think Preston felt my body language change because he let go of me and let me face the girl. My hands flew over my mouth as I looked over her. Her tight brown curls sticking out in different directions from her head in an afro. Her beautiful tan skin shining in the sun. Her miraculously bright flame blue eyes staring directly back into my miraculously bright flame blue eyes. My mini me.
My little sister.
"Kylie,"I whispered. I felt tears run down my cheeks as the girl in front of me gasped and began to cry too.
"Oh my god, Madly!" She lunged on to me, and we engulfed each other in suffocating hugs.
"Kylie! Honey are you ok? I was helping your sister tie her shoes and I turn around to see you on the floor!" A lady, about middle aged with brown straight hair and light makeup, ran up to us and knelt next to my sister, rubbing her back. She began to turn her head towards me while saying, "Is she hurt?" As soon as she saw me though, she seemed almost confused. She continued looking between Kylie and I when I think her mind finally clicked. "Is this the older sister you kept telling me about?"
"I hope so! I'm Madly, Kylie's older sister. Are you her adoptive mom?" I shook her hand, then reached out and took Preston's hand. I looked her up and down and noticed a small child clinging to the back of her legs.
"I am! My name is Holly, and the little monkey down here is Jenna. She was attached to Kylie when I went to the orphanage and I fell in love with both of them." I looked at the little girl and smiled. She smiled a bit too, but stayed hidden. The blonde, pale girl was no older than three, and she had stunning green eyes. I smiled at Kylie.
"You always did want a little sister," I said, ruffling her already frizzy hair.
"Well, us ladies better be heading off. Madly, here is my phone number in case you ever want to contact Kylie. I'm working on getting her a phone still." She handed me a piece of paper and picked up the child. They all walked off and Kylie turned and waved at me. I blew her a kiss and looked to Preston.
"Sweet," he mumbled under his breath and looked down. Still having his hand in mine, I brought him closer and looked into his eyes. They were truly broken and lost, but I just barely saw the smallest glimmer of hope. Tearing his hand and gaze away from mine, we walked back to the condos in silence. "Why are we coming here. To show me my home for the last time before taking me away?" he asked, his voice laced with poison.
"No. I um, I kind of live in here too, and, um, so, we're going to my, uh, house." I wanted to say more, but I couldn't find the words to say.
"Convinient," he muttered. We made our way up to my room, and he saddened when we passed his room. I opened my door and saw Lachlan sprawled out across my couch, laughing hysterically at something on TV. I chucked slightly under my breath and looked to Preston, who wasn't stiff in rage anymore. Lachlan looked over at us and instantly ran over to Preston and engulfed him in a hug. They stood there for a while like that, and they were both crying.
"Preston, she's kind and just wants the best for us. Please trust that whatever she does is for our benefit." Lachlan went on about how I just wanted the best for them, and Preston slowly relaxed in his hold, listening to his words. After a few minutes, all three of us were in tears and hugging each other. Kind of awkward, but we were all very emotional.
"This may be a bad time, but happy birthday Preston," I whispered when we were all wiping our faces. He hugged me one last time.
"Thank you," he whispered back.
