Fifteen

The days went by like they usually did. Nothing much happened. You spent the time preparing food, cleaning and riding the horses.

Sometimes, you went to Morvran's chambers and gave him a book. Or whenever he felt like it, he wanted to hear story from you. Stories about you.

His guest had arrived, one very noisy woman and a man that seemed to have the personality of a hollow tree.

They had occupied the guest chambers. The noble woman, whatever her name was, seemed to have a particular interest in Morvran. She was sitting beside his bed at any time. Whenever you delivered him food, she was next to him.

Whenever he asked you to bring him a new book, she was there. And whenever you wanted to tell him something about the mere, she was there too. She listened, but always seemed to be bothered by your presence.

"Forgive my interruption, sir.", you knocked on the open door.

As Morvran saw you, he put his book down. A smile appeared on his face.

"Ah, (Y/N). Come on in. What do want?", his voice was a lot more friendly than you had expected it to be.

Ever since the lady was around him, he had fallen back into his old distanced self and almost never smiled. He avoided talking to the servants more than necessary. Only Herman was still treated the same.

But even with you, he had changed his way of talking.
So it confused you, that his mood was this delightful all of a sudden again.

"I came to bring dinner. The table has been prepared for the lady and her soldier. Food will be served in a moment.", you hoped that she would just get up and leave.

But instead of fulfilling your wish, she just smiled coldly and looked at Morvran. She really had a thing for him. Her hands were always over him, touching his hand, stroking his face of fixing his long hair.

You had noticed that her being so close to him bothered you. Not that you would ever admit that publicly but still. It bothered you that she was touching him all the time. It made him visibly uncomfortable. But as a noble man he assumed to have no choice but to stay polite and let her take care of him.

"I will have dinner with the general.", she said in her usual tone, fake polite and sweet.

"The general can't walk. He will have to dine in bed.", you said, hoping she would swallow that pill.

But she didn't. Of course not.

"Then I will dine here too. Is that too hard to understand?"

"There is no space here."

"Then make space! Bring a small table or something."

A little aggressive, you glared at her.

How could a woman be this persistent?

Gods, she was annoying. You would have liked to hit her right across the face. Maybe that would have made her shut up.

"We have no tables. No one can bring it up here. You need to dine downstairs.", you insisted.

You wanted her to leave. Now.

For a long moment, you two just stared at each other. She was visibly bothered by your presence. It would have only taken a moment longer and you would have tried to kill her right on the spot.

But Morvran came to your aid. Calm, he pat the lady's hand and smiled politely.

"Please, Lady Debauteair. Don't worry about me. I will be able to dine on my own.", he smiled again and waited for her to get up.

But she hesitated.

"I don't think this is a good idea. I'm a highly skilled mage. If you're in pain, I can treat it right away.", she insisted.

Now, even Morvran seemed to be a little bothered.

"You're not a healer as far as I recall. How do you want to help me then? Will you tried to burn my foot with your magical flames?"

That sarcastic question made her go red.

"N-no, of course not.", she stuttered. "I just-"

"Don't. Please just go and eat dinner. I will be fine by myself.", expectantly, he stared at her until she finally got up, pulled the hem of her dress up and walked out.

On her way through the door, she threw a deadly glance at you. She really seemed pissed that he had sided with you instead of her. Maybe she now knew that he was not as fond of her as she had hoped.

A short moment, silence spread. Only when the sound of steps walking down the stairs sounded, Morvran asked you to come closer. You closed the door behind you, before stepping to his side and you placed the tabled filled with a plate and two bowls before him before sitting in the chair that the Lady had sat in.

With a deep breath, Morvran took in the scent of the fresh food.

"It smells amazing. Like always.", he took a spoon full of the stew you had prepared for the last two days. "And it tastes even better. You're an amazing cook, I must admit. I think I've never told you before."

With a smile, you took the compliment. But a heavy feeling was filling your chest.

Morvran noticed, put the spoon aside and eyed you up and down.

"Are you alright? You look worried.", carefully, he grabbed your hand and squeezed it.

For a short moment, you remained frozen. Lost in thoughts, you just stared at his hand. His touch was warm and soft. He had strange hands for a general, large and strong but not marked by battles.

Without thinking, you reached with your other hand for it and began to draw circles on the back.

"Are you alright? (Y/N)?", he asked again, tearing you from the world of dreams.

With a heavy hearted smile, you looked at him.

"Do you remember the letter, that you wanted me to send the emperor?", you asked.

"Yes, of course. You were supposed to tell him that I need to recover. He was supposed to know that I won't be able to return any time soon."

You nodded.

"He send a letter back.", with shaking hands, you pulled it out of your pocked.

The seal was already broken. You had read it beforehand. Maybe it had been a bad idea to do so.
