Chapter 1
3rd Person P.O.V
In a world of bone and dust, three beings could be seen watching the human realm. The first was an imposing figure dressed completely in black, with his pitch black hair styled in spikes. His black hair, makeup and outfit was a stark contrast to his extremely pale skin. The second being was an equally pale-skinned woman with white hair and dressed all in white, though she also wore dark blue lipstick, and her eyeshadow was a combination of dark blue, white, and silver. The third being was just as pale-skinned as her two companions, but she had very light blonde hair and wore pale blue, though still dressed in an identical manner to her two companions, and also wore pale blue eyeshadow and pale blue lipstick. Though the third being was laying down with her head resting on the second being's lap. These three were Ryuk, Rem and Nora. They were shinigamis, otherwise known as death gods. But their lives were not as interesting as one would expect for immortal beings. A life of a shinigami consisted of playing with bones, gambling, and writing down the names of humans in their Death Notes, an action which would lead to the death of that unfortunate human.
"Bleh, humans. Just scurrying about their lives with the same old routine, day in and day out. So boring." Ryuk complained.
"You had your fun with the Kira situation, Ryuk. Even though that went too far when Light Yagami proposed his scenario to kill his nemesis. Both L and Light were destined to die that day. So writing their names in my Death Note made that whole scenario play out, though Light believed it was his scenario playing out. He took it too far when he tried to manipulate Rem by using Misa Amane against her, even though he knew what that would do to her. The only reason I didn't suffer the penalty is because I did not interfere with the situation prior to that moment, so I was not doing it for a human's favour. I did it to save Rem." Nora remarked, sounding bitter at having to mention Light's name. Rem flinched a little at the reminder of how close she'd come to her demise, but then gave a smile when Nora took her hand.
"Fair point." Ryuk muttered, knowing Nora still hadn't entirely forgiven him for that situation.
"And yet you still want to visit the human realm yourself? Even though we've seen what some humans can be capable of?" Rem questioned, earning a frown from Nora, who then sat up and turned to face Rem.
"This decision was a difficult decision to make, because I don't want to leave you, my beloved Rem. But I believe that not all humans are as bad as he was. There's got to be some good ones as well. And I would not be visible to them, and I certainly will not be dropping my Death Note for one of them to find. And living among them for a little while will certainly never make me forget about you." Nora said, leaning forward and kissing Rem, who returned the affection, though Ryuk averted his gaze in a joking manner. While Rem may have viewed love between mortals as foolish, something she revealed as much to Misa, what she had with Nora was different. Their relationship had been built on a life-long friendship, as well as trust and honesty.
"Alright, get a room." Ryuk joked, still averting his gaze. Nora and Rem did pull apart at this, if only to playfully glare at their fellow shinigami. Nora then rose to her feet.
"Admit it, you're going to miss me while I'm gone." Nora teased Ryuk, who seemed to want to deny it but knew he couldn't.
"I suppose you're right." Ryuk said, allowing Nora to hug him. Admittedly, he did view both Nora and Rem as his sisters, as the three of them had spent almost all of their eternal lives together, hence why he essentially took the role of the annoying brother. Nora released him, before turning back to Rem, who had also risen to her feet.
"I shall try not to be gone too long." Nora said.
"You'd better not be, or I will track you down and bring you back here myself." Rem teased, although Nora could tell she was also being serious at the same time.
"Received and understood." Nora said. She gave Rem one last kiss, before vanishing in a flash of light. While Ryuk was often prone to comment on things, even he knew now was not the time for snarky remarks. He knew why Rem had been so reluctant to let Nora go, especially after the Kira situation. The shinigami allowed his mind to wander back to the particular day in question, when Nora had saved Rem from dying due to Light Yagami's manipulations.
****Flashback****
It had been almost five years since Light Yagami had first found the Death Note that Ryuk had dropped out of boredom, and began using it, thus becoming the mysterious Kira. However, at that point, even Ryuk could tell Light was about to go too far when he spoke about Rem having to die in order to save Misa from L.
"So, you were aware of that?" Rem questioned, referring to the price Light wanted her to pay.
"The penalty for a shinigami saving the life of another human is death. You know too much. It's going to get more difficult with you still alive. It's killing two birds with one stone if you die alone with L." Light spoke.
"I've never heard of a human trying to kill a shinigami." Ryuk remarked, although he knew a certain shinigami that was going to be very pissed off if she caught wind of what Light was planning
"I've written a well-thought out scenario. All Rem has to do is copy it into her Death Note and add L's name." Light said. Rem was reluctant to go along with this, even though it meant she could save Misa from L.
"And who do you think you are to dictate the actions of a shinigami, Light Yagami?!" A disembodied female voice spoke angrily. Light was so startled, he missed the look of relief that appeared on Rem's face.
"Oh dear, she sounds beyond mad. Someone's in trouble." Ryuk sing-songed the second part of his sentence. There was a flash of light, and Nora appeared between Rem and Ryuk, and she was well past angry at what was going on, having been observing the entire Kira case from the shinigami realm.
"W-who are you?" Light questioned, and for the first time since he became Kira, he was frightened by this strange woman who had just appeared in his room.
"I am Nora. I am also a shinigami. Whereas you, Light Yagami, are just a mortal playing at being a god. You have no right to tell Rem that she must die in order to defeat your nemesis. Misa Amane can be saved by relinquishing her ownership of the Death Note. That way, her memories will be erased, and she can no longer reveal Kira's true identity. There is no need for Rem to sacrifice her own life because of your delusions that you are the god of this new world you aim to create. L Lawliet's time is approaching, as is your own." Nora answered, uncaring that she was revealing L's true name, for she had written down her own scenario that included L's name. She was not doing this to save a human, and thus she would not receive the penalty. She'd had enough of the Kira situation, and ending L's life would merely add to her own lifespan, the way it did for every shinigami when they wrote a human's name in the Death Note. She knew Ryuk would write Light's name into the Death Note when it was his time.
"L Lawliet? Finally I learn his real name." Light said, more focused on the fact he could finally defeat his nemesis as he wrote the name into his scenario, not knowing that Nora's scenario would trump his own, no matter how well thought out his scenario was. This was because Nora's scenario had been completed before his had, so hers would be the one to take effect.
"Rem, you must get Misa Amane to relinquish her ownership of the Death Note. You do not need to do anything more after that." Nora said.
"Thank you, Nora. I'm glad you arrived when you did." Rem said.
"Anything for you, my love." Nora said. Light looked up in time to see Nora and Rem share a kiss, and had to hide his annoyance at the realisation that Misa had never been Rem's weakness. Instead, it was this third shinigami that had just thrown a wrench into his well-constructed plan, and there was nothing he could do about it. Ryuk, on the other hand, was highly entertained by the situation. Rem pulled away from Nora, before vanishing in a flash of light to retrieve the Death Note from Misa.
"You never told me there was a third shinigami involved in this." Light said, looking at Ryuk.
"You never asked. And Nora was never involved. She's been in the shinigami realm up until now. But had your little plot succeeded in killing Rem, well, you'd be the prime target of a highly-vengeful shinigami. And boy, that would not end well for you." Ryuk said.
"Though you are lucky I would not be able to kill you myself had that happened, as you are in possession of a Death Note. But I could easily arrange an incident that would affect you. Rem means everything to me, and I would do whatever it took to avenge her." Nora said, a dark look in her eyes as she looked at Light, giving a very clear indicator that she wasn't joking. Shortly after that, Rem reappeared in the room with her Death Note in her hands.
"Misa Amane has relinquished ownership of the Death Note, and her memories have been erased. The Shinigami Eyes have also been taken from her. She will remember nothing about Kira's identity or that she was ever in possession of a Death Note." Rem said.
"You should prepare, Light Yagami. Your encounter with L Lawliet approaches. Ryuk, you know what must be done. And have this, since you appear to have an odd fascination with these things." Nora said, holding out an apple, which Ryuk happily took and began munching on. With that, both Nora and Rem vanished, returning to the shinigami realm. Unknown to Light, his time was also rapidly approaching, and it wasn't long until Ryuk would write his name into the Death Note, which would be the end of him.
****End of flashback****
Shaking his head to bring himself back to the present, Ryuk looked at the spot where Nora had previously stood. He knew that even though Nora and Rem's love was strong, if Nora spent too long in the human realm, it could start planting seeds of doubt into Rem's mind. Rem had always viewed love between mortals as foolish, and the last thing Ryuk wanted to happen was for Rem to start believing she had been a fool for falling in love with Nora. Little did he know that Nora was going to be gone longer than any of them had anticipated, and that was exactly what was going to happen, especially when both he and Rem realised they could no longer track Nora in the human world.
