Backstory: Kai was born in Luoyang, China to a poor single mother (Hong Lan), his biological father had died before he was born. His future was beginning to look grim as soon as he arrived into the world. His mother was not so fortunate as she was mysteriously killed by Shang Tsung, he was then taken by the sorcerer who impersonated his mother for years, hiding any information on her. When he turned 16, he found out what happened to his mother, enraged, he ran away, attempting to severe any links he had to the evil sorcerer only to fail. Six years later, he fights in the tournament as a second attempt to severe any links he had, to finally avenge his mother, to free her soul. He was only successful five years later when he bested the sorcerer, tho he could not get his mother's soul back, he got something much better in exchange, revenge, freedom.

Backstory: Not much is known about Kay's past, she was adopted by Keiji at the age of 2, she was brought over to Japan and raised alongside her adoptive brother. Everything seemed normal up until she went to university in Canada. While she was studying there, she recevied news that her father had suddenly died, that her brother had joined the Black Dragon. She was asked to return to Japan to pick up any stuff she had remaining there. She ended up taking her father's gauntlets and nothing else. After she finished her first year, she decided to fight in the tournament, treating it as a revenge mission against Kano. Despite getting numerous apologies from her brother, she has not forgiven him as she felt he had betrayed her and the family.
