*Chapter Ten* {Heart of Darkness}
"I have three soulmates," I blurt the second I enter the kitchen and my mom gives me her 'I'm-about-to-chew-your-ass' look. "It's their fault I didn't come home last night," I tell her not feeling an ounce of guilt for throwing them under the bus as long as it got me out of trouble. "Well, two of them, the other one was out of town until this morning" I correct myself.
"You have... what?" My mom frowns her eyebrows. Slowly, I roll up my sleeve and show her the tattoo. She steps forward and examines the tattoo instantly noticing that it's not a normal one seeing as it has this lifelike feature to it.
It's hard to explain but it's easy to tell that the tattoo isn't a tattoo someone else would put on your body. There's a small sway to it as if there's a light breeze. You could also see the magic running up the bark into the branches and leaves.
I then notice subtle differences in the mark compared to when I last looked at it. The tree looks strong and sturdy. The leaves didn't seem completely bloomed yet but they were started to bud. I couldn't help but to smile as I thought about how the tree seemed to be growing with our relationship, strengthening as our bond strengthens.
"When did this happen?" She asks quietly.
"Last Friday," I answer hesitantly.
"Good... Congrats," She says before walking out of the kitchen and towards her room. I stand there for a few minutes feeling dumbfounded.
"Ok then," I mutter quietly. "Eh, at least she didn't yell at me" I mumble going towards my room.
I pull out my school books and get my homework done around the time Erica comes home. My sister graduated last year but hasn't decided if she wants college or not. She works down at the grocery store during the day before coming home at night.
"How'd it go?" She asks almost instantly that mom was pissed about me being MIA for the night.
"I told her about my soulmates," I said. Erica raises an eyebrow at me while undressing. "She was... weird about it"
"Weird?" Erica asks and I nod.
"At first I don't think she believed me. Then when I proved it she was like 'Congrats' and went into her room," I said sounding disheartened. I couldn't help it, I was hoping my mom would be more excited about me having soulmates than she was.
"That is weird, I though she would be excited" Erica agrees with me.
"Right!" I throw my hands up. "I don't even know, maybe she's stressed with work and it hasn't really sunk in yet" I shrug.
"Maybe," She mutters. "So, what the fuck? What happened last night?" Erica asks raising an eyebrow at me. "I thought I was meeting Elijah and then you were just gone."
"I'm sorry something just... came up" I shrug slightly. Erica stares at me and I stumble over my thoughts. I knew I couldn't tell her the whole truth but I always had trouble lying to her.
"Well," Erica continues after a few awkward moments. "When can I actually meet them?" She asks pulling on some more comfortable clothes.
"Umm..." I sigh running a hand through my hair. "Oh! Are you and Tommy going to the decades dance this Friday?" I ask. Despite the fact that they're not in high school they still like the go to the dances. It's a small town, not much to do.
"We might make an appearance" She grins teasingly.
"Well, if you do, then you'll get to meet them" I tell her. "They'll be there... At least they should because I'll be there. At least one will be there but I hope they all go" I ramble slightly as I realize none of them actually said that they were going. I just assumed they would go seeing that I was going.
"Well, hopefully I get to meet them then" Erica says falling on her bed.
"You will," I promise her. "I think you'll like them. They're handsome and charming and they can be gentlemen when they wanna be" I smile thinking about them. "They're so similar but they're also so different. It's definitely interesting being with them. I just hope that I'm enough for all of them and that I'll be able to keep up. I don't want to be the one to hold them back."
"I haven't met them but I can promise you that you are enough for them, you're perfect" Erica promises making me smile a bit. "And if you can't keep up then they should slow down and help you along. I also don't think you'll hold them back. You're very supporting and you do a lot for people"
"What do I do?" I ask tilting my head. "I barely get out of bed,"
"Well, you've always been there for me when I need something. You support my decision to not go off to college and you try to help me figure out plans for my future." Erica shrugs. "I don't think you're the type to hold someone back, I don't think you should worry about it"
"I worry about a lot of things" I mutter laying back on my pillows. "Like, what if someone can hear me watching to Netflix through my headphones and are secretly judging me on how much I replay scenes with Spencer Reid"
"Anybody who knows you judges you on how obsessed you are with a fictional character" Erica comments. My eyes widened and I sit straight up.
"At least I didn't plan a whole wedding with Derek Morgan" I shot at her.
"I'm not even going to deny that," Erica says shamelessly. "I love Tommy but I'd trade him in a heartbeat" I laugh and lay back down on my bed. "You're telling me that you wouldn't trade one of your mates for Spencer Reid?" Erica asks me and I think about it.
"I don't think I'd trade for Spence, but I do think I'd add him to the mix" I grin.
"I'm sure Klaus, Kol and Elijah would love that," Erica says sarcastically.
"Please," I scoff. "I don't think Spencer would last an hour" I shake my head. Then I frown my eyebrows. "What's his real name?" I wonder.
"You've obsessed over Spencer Reid since Freshmen year and you don't know the name of the actor?" Erica asks before laughing.
"I'm in love with Spencer not the actor!" I say defensively. "In my head they're two completely different people. Like Spencer is one twin and what's-his-face is the other"
"His name is Matthew," Erica informs me. "Matthew Grey Gubler"
"Gubler?" I mumble. "I like Reid better" I whisper shrugging. "Do you ever think about dad?" I ask hesitantly.
"Why would I think of that asshole?" Erica grumbles. I shrug slightly. "Why are you thinking about him?"
"I miss him," I tell her hesitantly. "I wish he was still here,"
"Well, it was his decision to leave not ours" Erica tells me obviously annoyed. "Don't waste your thoughts on that asshole, he doesn't deserve an ounce of your attention" I don't respond to Erica. I just roll on my side still deep in thought.
The next day Kol picked me up from the house. Unfortunately, Erica was already gone for work so she didn't get to meet him. I really hope Erica meets them on Friday or I swear I'll never hear the end of it.
"So, I'm sure by now you've noticed that there's a dance on Friday at the school," I mention as Kol drives the car.
"It's all Rebekah talks about," Kol rolls his eyes. "Apparently she's helping set it up or whatever," He shrugs.
"Really?" I ask with a small smile. "Caroline's not going to like that," I grin a bit more. Kol sends a smirk my way obviously enjoying the fact that I take pleasure from Caroline's displeasure. "Anyways, I wasn't sure if you wanted to go" I mumble nervously.
"Are you asking me on a date?" Kol asks grinning widely. I instantly get mixed emotions. I didn't know it was possible to feel both confident yet not confident either.
"Umm... Yeah," I nod pushing through the anxiety. I glance over at him. Seeing the face splitting grin on his face instantly makes me feel better. "I wanna go with the hottest dates there,"
"Oh, without a doubt" Kol nods turning his head towards me. "I'd love to go with you," He says grabbing my hand. I turn my palm upwards and instantly begin playing with his fingers.
I don't know what it is about their hands but I love them. They give me this sense of comfort. They're so smooth and gentle. I also know how strong they are. If any of them wished to harm me they could without breaking a sweat yet I trusted them not too. There's something so sensual about holding something with the power to kill you yet it's the gentlest thing you've ever touched.
"As long as I get the first dance," Kol bargains.
"I think I can meet your terms," I say grinning at him.
"Then you have yourself a date, Kitkat" He winks at me. I didn't both to hide the blush on my cheeks. Being around them, the blush was hardly away from my cheek area.
"Great, now I only have to ask two others," I mutter suddenly feeling anxious again.
"All you have to do is ask, they'll go" Kol assures me.
I watch as he pulls into the parking lot. He gets out and jogs over to my side. I grin widely as he opens the door for me. I step out and sling my bag over my shoulder. Kol instantly reaches for my hand as we walk inside.
"Where's you sister?" I ask. Kol looks at me curiously.
"Why would you want to talk to her?" He asks.
"I just wanna get to know her," I shrug slightly. "We didn't exactly get off on the right foot, I wanna try again"
"Don't take it too personally, love" Kol says directing me down a different hallway. "My sister is insufferable and she does everything in her power to make others as miserable as she is"
"Well, maybe she needs something happy in life" I suggest. "Maybe something she can look forward too,"
"Like this stupid dance," Kol mutters leading me into the cafeteria.
"Maybe we can do both decades?" I hear Mat suggesting. Almost instantly both blondes, Caroline and Rebekah, glare at him.
"No" They both snap.
"Go on, Matt, don't be a coward. You know you loved my 20's idea when I presented it to the group" Rebekah snarks crossing her arms.
"Traitor" Caroline growls glaring at Matt.
"Bell bottoms and disco? I don't know, this just seemed cooler" Matt shrugs slightly.
"See?" Rebekah smirks smugly. "It's just cooler"
"Whatever. Have fun at your stupid dance," Caroline grumbles marching away. Matt I quick to run after her.
"Well, that has to be the only interesting thing that's happened at this boring school" Kol comments rolling his eyes.
"What are you doing here, Kol?" Rebekah asks annoyed. "Don't you see I have work to do?"
"I'm not the one who wants to talk to you," Kol shrugs.
"Thanks," I grumble nudging his side. He grins and kisses the top of my head. Rebekah rests her hand on her hip and gives me a look.
"Well?" Rebekah snapped.
"Watch your tone," Kol growls losing his playful nature. Rebekah, not intimidated in the slightest, rolls her eyes.
"If you're not going to say anything then get going, I have a lot to do" Rebekah says looking down at her clipboard muttering something under her breath. Whatever she said obviously triggered a reaction from Kol. His grip around my hand tightens and he growls even more at his sister.
"I was just wondering if there's anything I can do to help," I quickly speak up. "You seem to have a lot on your plate, maybe I could take something off your shoulders"
"Why don't you just keep my brothers out of my way and let me do what I have to," She says giving me a fake smile before walking away.
"What did I ever do to her?" I sigh as my shoulders drop.
"She's just being a brat, Angel" Kol says turning me to face him. He cups both sides of my face. "Don't worry about her," He pleads quietly.
"I guess if we're meant to be friends it'll happen" I say shrugging. "It's fine, I just thought it'd be easier to be in your family if we were friends."
"I can talk to her if you want me too," Kol offers. "It'll be my pleasure" Kol smirks. I smile but I shake my head.
"No, I don't want her to be forced into it. Come on, let's get to class" I say kissing his cheek before pulling him out of the cafeteria.
