*Chapter Seven* {The Murder of One}

"I'm going to get some more pizza, want some?" Erica asks peeling away from the computer screen and climbing off the bed.

"No," I mutter not daring to look away as Spencer Reid enters the shot. Erica hesitates to leave, her eyes glued on Derek Morgan as the two best friends share a scene.

"It should be illegal to look so delicious" Erica whispers. I could only nod in agreement but for once my mind doesn't go to Spencer Reid as she says the statement. Instead Elijah, Klaus and Kol fill my mind.

Slowly, Erica leaves the room to go get her pizza. I try to refocus on the show but found it harder than normal. All I could think about was my three mates. I miss them, it's been almost two days since I've seen any of them. I figured they were busy trying to find their brother to unlink themselves. I knew they were busy but that didn't stop me from wanting to see them. Although, I didn't want to bother them.

"What are you watching?" I nearly jump out of my skin as I hear Kol's voice from behind me. "Who are they? They're not that good looking" He grumbles.

"What are you doing here?" I ask turning towards him.

"I wanted to see you," Kol shrugs taking a seat beside me. I notice him giving my computer an annoyed look.

"How long have you been here?" I ask him.

"Long enough," He huffs. I slowly smile at him. Hesitantly, I reach for his hand. His eyes snap towards me as I pull his hand into my lap.

"I missed you," I whisper not looking into his eyes. He turns his hand around, palm up, and links out fingers together. I smile and slowly look up.

"Do you wanna go somewhere with me?" Kol asks curiously.

"Go where?"

"I have to be in Denver for a few days, come with me" Kol suggests shuffling closer to me.

"Denver? What's in Denver?" I ask. Kol looks hesitant to answer me. "What's going on?"

"We're close to getting Finn," He explains to me. "Once we have his blood we'll have everything we need to unlink ourselves. Only thing is that the witch we're going to use to unlink us won't do it without some... motivation"

"Motivation?" I asks slowly. "I don't like the sound of that," I mutter. He gives me a small smile.

"Because you're a nice person, me and my siblings on the other hand..." Kol smirks with a small shrug. I couldn't help but to smile a bit. "Nothing bad will happen as long as the witch does what we want. Come with me,"

"I can't go to Denver, Kol" I whisper shaking my head. "My mom would never let me-"

"You're 18" Kol reminds me.

"I just turned 18, just because I'm an adult doesn't mean I'm not going to go to my mom" I tell him. "Besides, I still have school. I can't just leave, I'm sorry" I whisper. Kol sighs but nods. "Will you come back?" I ask quietly.

"As long as you're here to come back to," Kol flirts. I blush all too easily. "Come here," He whispers pulling on my hand. I climb into his lap and comfortably curl into his chest. "I won't be gone long," He promises.

"Be careful," I whisper to him. He presses his lips against the top of my head. I grip his shirt cuddling closer to him. I didn't want him to leave, I wanted him to stay here with me.

"You should go see Elijah or Klaus, darling" Kol whispers to me.

"I don't want to bother them," Kol lifts my head to look at him.

"You're not a bother, don't ever think that," Kol says with a gentle firmness. "If we had our way you'd be living with us, never out of our eyesight" I didn't know how to respond but I felt better with his reassurance. "Go visit them, I promise that they miss you more than you miss them"

"Why didn't any of you come to me?" I asks curiously.

"Just because you can't see us doesn't mean we're not there," He mutters. I raise an eyebrow at him.

"Are you stalking me?" I ask smirking slightly.

"Stalking is a strong word, Precious" Kol grins. I roll my eyes and shake my head. "Elijah has convinced us to give you some time to come to terms with the bond, he doesn't want us overwhelming you" Kol rolls his eyes.

"I was beginning to think you guys were forgetting about me," I tease lightly. Kol didn't seem to find the humor and gently grips my chin.

"You're our life, Angel" Kol whispers. His hand moves to the side of my cheek and cups it gently. "You'd never bother us and we'd never forget you. We don't want anyone else, just you. For all of eternity."

"That's a long time," I whisper.

"I've been alive for a long time," Kol whispers pressing his forehead against mine. "I've never looked forward to the future more than I am with you in it,"

"Are all of you so smooth?" I ask quietly. Kol smirks nudging my nose with his.

"My brothers could only with they were as smooth as I am," Kol whispers causing me to smile widely. "Your sister's been eavesdropping," Kol whispers into her ear.

"Of course she is," I roll my eyes.

"I'll leave you two to it," Kol reluctantly pulls away from me. I pout slightly. His expression softens. He leans down and kisses my forehead. "I won't be gone for long," He promises.

"I'll be waiting," I tell him. Kol smiles before disappearing.

"I am so jealous," Erica says slowly entering the room.

"You have Tommy," I remind her. Erica smiles a bit and sits beside me.

"Tommy's wonderful and I love him but we'll never have what you'll have with them. He's not my soulmate" Erica says laying on the bed. "I wish he was,"

I wanted to reassure her that she'd find her soulmate but I didn't want to give her false hope. While soulmates are wildly known, they're extremely rare. Elijah, Kol and Klaus have been alive for almost a thousand years yet they're just now finding me.

I don't know anybody else who has met their soulmate. No one in our family nor our friends have found their soulmates. Erica has a better chance settling down with Tommy than ever finding a soulmate. It's not the best thought but it's reality.

"Just because you're not soulmate doesn't mean that you two can't be happy together," I tell her gently. Erica smiles slightly no doubt envisioning a future with Tommy.

"Wanna watch another episode of Criminal Minds?" Erica suggests. I grin and instantly nod. Reaching forward I confirm that my sister and I are still watching Criminal Minds on Netflix.

The next day I took Kol's advice and decided to visit Klaus and Elijah. I, surprisingly, woke up before Erica and took the car before she could claim it. I drove to the mansion and hoped I wouldn't be intruding.

"Kat," Elijah greeted with a pleasant smile. He had opened the door before I even walked up three steps. I smiled coming to a stop. "Please, come in" Elijah opens the door wider and I snap out of my gaze.

I quickly jog up the rest of the steps and try to make it seem as if it were easy. I give him a smile while trying to control my breathing. I knew I needed to get in shape but pizza and Netflix always seems like such a better option.

"I'm glad you decided to stop by," Elijah says closing the door after me.

"Kol visited me last night," I tell him. "He said you guys were missing me" I grin teasingly at him.

"Every second that we're apart," Elijah tells me truthfully. I feel my teasing grin turn into a more genuine smile.

"Where's Klaus?" I wonder looking around the home.

"He's out of town at the moment," I glance at him and hope he doesn't notice my disappointment. I couldn't help but to think 'At least Kol had the decency to visit me before leaving'. "Don't worry, he should be returning soon"

"Good," I smile swaying on my feet awkwardly. Elijah smiles and offers his arm.

"Care to join me for a walk?" Blushing slightly I nod and link my arm with his. He leads me out back and through the garden.

"So, is Klaus out of town because of Finn?" I ask glancing up at Elijah.

"Yes," Elijah nods. "Klaus and Rebekah have gone to... bring him back for a few moments"

"I'm curious," I suddenly declare changing the subject. Elijah motions for me to continue. "Who's all... different in town?" I ask him. "Who are the vampires? Werewolves? Witches?"

"Well, you have Bonnie Bennet who is a witch," Elijah explains. I nod remembering one of them mention this earlier. "The Salvatore's are vampires,"

"Really?" I ask him. "Oh, well I guess that makes sense" I mutter as I think about it. Elijah smiles fondly before continuing.

"Caroline is a vampire," I couldn't help but to roll my eyes at her name. "Elena Gilbert is a doppelganger"

"A doppelganger?" I ask. "Like a double of someone else?"

"More like a descendent of a woman from when I was human," He explains. "She belongs to a line of Petrova's."

"What can they do?" I wonder.

"It's not what they can do but what purpose they serve," Elijah gently corrects. I look at him wanting more of a explanation. "Tatia is the original doppelganger. She was alive when me and my siblings were human. It was her blood we drank to become vampires and it was hers that was used to curse Niklaus"

"Curse Nik?" I asks him.

"For a millennium, Niklaus's werewolf side was bound. Only through a ritual with the moonstone, a werewolf, a vampire, and the doppelganger would his wolf side be unleashed. Only a few months ago did he break the curse," Elijah explains to me.

"I couldn't imagine living a thousand years with a part of myself locked away," I whisper.

"It was not easy," Turning away from Elijah I smile seeing Klaus stroll down the path towards us. "Hogging our mate all to yourself, brother?"

"Well, you were occupied at the moment so I took it upon myself to entertain her for the time being" Elijah smiles giving my hand a gentle squeeze.

"Did you find him?" I instantly ask. I hated the idea of them being linked together, of them being vulnerable.

"We did," Klaus nods. "We have his blood and the witch, we'll be unlinked by the end of the day."

"When it's done will Kol be able to come back?" I ask.

"Soon," Klaus promises. "A lot is going to be happening today, if you're staying then please stay with Elijah" Klaus lightly orders.

"Anything I should be worried about?" I ask and Klaus gives me a small smile.

"No, of course not" He says softly. He moves closer to me and caresses my cheek lightly. "You're safe here, with us. You'll always be safe with us." He mutters quietly.

"I trust you," I reassure him. He bends down and kisses the top of my head.

"I won't be able to stay with you today," He mutters to me. "I'll make it up to you."

"Don't worry about it, I get it" I shrug slightly. "You have to get unlinked"

"Tomorrow I'll take you out for dinner," He promises. I grin and nod happy at the idea of spending time with him. He places another kiss on my forehead before returning back to the house.

"I guess I should go," I say turning back to Elijah. He frowns his eyebrows slightly. "You guys are obviously busy, I don't want to be in the way"

"You're not in the way," Elijah reassures me.

"Still, I should get back. Erica's been trapped at the house all day, she'll want the car for tonight" Pressing his lips together, Elijah slowly nods.

"Very well," Elijah stands up. He walks with me back to my car. As we walk through the house we pass a very tall man with short brown hair and a slightly shorter redhead. They seemed too engrossed with each other to even notice us walking past them.

"Was that Finn?" I ask quietly as we go towards the car.

"Yes," Elijah nods. "The woman with him is Sage, his mate"

"They look cute together," I mutter with a small smile. Elijah smiles pulling me close to his side. I lean against him as we approach the car.

"Stay," Elijah asks pushing my back against the car. "Stay with me, we can do anything you want" I smile placing my hands on his chest. His hands cover mine and lift them to his lips. He kisses both palms while keeping his eyes on me.

"I think you should stay here in case Nik needs help breaking the spell that's on your guys," I tell him. "And I need to go make sure my sister isn't tearing down the house. Besides, you can always come over tonight when everything's said and done,"

"I'll be there" Elijah promises. I smile wrapping my arms around his neck pulling him into a hug. Elijah nuzzles his head into my neck. I smile hugging him tighter.

"I'll see you tonight," I whispers pulling away from him. He nods kissing my cheek before opening the car door. I smile at him again before slipping inside. I glance at him in the rearview mirror as I drive back him.

"Don't even bother getting out of the car!" Erica shouts practically racing out of the house. "We're going to the Grill"

"Erica" I whine.

"Go! Before mom tries to stop us" Erica says quickly. I roll my eyes but back out of the driveway. "So, where did you run off too?"

"I went to see Elijah" I tell her.

"Oh? Anything juicy?" Erica wiggles her eyebrows. I smile but roll my eyes.

"No, Erica, I didn't get laid... We just talked" Erica pouts.

"I heard sex with your soulmate is astronomical" Erica grins winking at me. "I expect a full report when it finally happens" She says dramatically. I sigh slightly annoyed with her but I don't comment on her pushiness.

"Where do you hear all of this stuff on soulmates?" I ask glancing at her.

"Google" She answers obviously.

"Ah," I mutter nodding. "Why are we going to the Grill?"

"To see Tommy," She tells me.

"That's why you're going to the Grill, why am I going?" I specify.

"Well, I was hoping for some juicy romance stories on the way to the Grill but I forgot how slow you move," Erica rolls her eyes. I frown my eyebrows.

"Well, sorry I don't spread my legs on the first date" I snip.

"What's that supposed to me?" Erica growls. "Are you calling me a whore?" I sigh loudly thinking 'This is escalating quickly'.

"No, of course not, Ms. Virgin" I say sarcastically unable to help myself.

"At least I don't play with feelings," Erica said defensively. My jaw drops. "You show interest in your soulmates one second and then ignore them for days,"

"I do not ignore them" Erica scoffs turning her head to look out the window. "I'm sorry I was taking a few days to figure out what is going on. This isn't exactly a normal situation"

"No it's not," Erica agrees with me. "It should be simpler than a normal situation. You're soulmates, you're meant to be together. What's holding you back?"

"Nothing about this is simple," I laugh shaking my head. "You don't have all the facts Erica, back off" I demand.

"No," Erica shakes her head. "I want to know what's going on"

"Well, tough" I tell her. "I don't have to tell you shit. What is going on is between me and them, not you" I say sternly. "We're moving at a pace that is comfortable for all of us"

"I'd give them something if I were you," Erica advises. "Those guys are unnaturally hot, they're not just going to stick around forever if you don't put up"

"Erica!" I gasped. "What the fuck?!"

"I just don't want you to get hurt because they left you," Erica defends herself. "Don't bore them"

"Why are you being such a fucking bitch?" I ask parking the car.

"I'm not trying to be a bitch-"

"Well you are" I snap climbing out of the car.

"Fine, I'm a bitch that's just trying to look out for you" Erica rolls her eyes.

"No, you're a bitch that's trying to hurt me"

"Well, you know what? I'm a little hurt that you're keeping things from me. We're sisters, we used to tell me everything and now you're saying that you're keeping things from me?" Erica asks me.

"You don't have to know everything, Erica. Fucking chill," I roll my eyes walking ahead of her towards the Grill. Suddenly I come to a stop and Erica runs into me.

"What are you doing?"

"Oh my God, you're jealous" I say spinning on my heals towards her.

"What?" Erica raises an eyebrow at me.

"You're. Jealous. Of. Me." I say slowly. "That's why you flipped a switch and turned into a bitch" I said mentally applauding myself for the mini rhyme. "I never thought the day would come when perfect Erica is jealous of me!"

"Fine, I'm jealous" Erica grumbles crossing her arms. "You have something I've dreamed about. Something I may never have."

"Erica, you don't need a soulmate to be happy" I try to comfort. "You and I both know if I didn't find my soulmates, I would have ended up alone" Erica glances up at me. "You know it's true. You're the one with the outgoing personality, you're the one with the undeniable beauty, you're the catch and I'm not" I say shrugging. "You can have anyone you want, you have options."

"Kat," Erica sighs. "It may have taken longer but I don't think you would have ended up alone" She tells me. "And I am happy for you, really" She insists.

"You just wish it would have happened to you instead" I summarized.

"I'm a horrible person," Erica says.

"There's room for improvement" I tease lightly. Erica smiles and laughs a bit.

"I'm sorry for being a bitch. They're not going to leave you, they adore you. Anyone with eyes and ears can tell." Erica reassures me.

"Really?" I ask doubtfully. Erica smiles and pulls me into a tight hug.

"I hope they make you realize just how much of a catch you are," She whispers to me. I smile but don't respond. "Are we ok?"

"We're fine," I reassure her. It's not the first time I've experienced whiplash from her mood swings. I could only assume that Aunt Flow is visiting her.

"Come on, I think we need a drink" Erica says pulling me into the Grill.

"And how are we going to get a drink?" I ask her. "You're 19"

"But Tommy's older brother, David is 23" Erica winks at me. I roll my eyes following at her. Once Erica sees Tommy she darts towards him.

"Kat, right?" David asks walking up to me.

"Yeah, hey David" I smile at him.

"How're holding up with those two?" He asks nodding towards the suffocating cute couple.

"They're a handful" I admitted. David smiles nodding in agreement.

"David! Hey, how are you?" Erica asks overly nice.

"What do you want?" David asks knowingly. Erica smiles at him sweetly. She gave him the drink orders with a pleading smile. David nods walking towards the bar.

"I love your brother" Erica says to Tommy who rolls his eyes. Soon, David comes back with the drinks before we start a pool competition.

I didn't mind playing pool but it certainly is more fun with Kol. I couldn't help but to miss Kol even more as I played with Erica, Tommy and David. Although, as it got closer to our time to go home, I couldn't help but to get excited at the thought of spending time with Elijah. Then I thought about tomorrow and how I would spend it with Nik. It helped the loneliness I felt from Kol's absence.

"I'm going to use the bathroom," I tell Erica who simply nods. I weave through the crowd and smile slightly when I notice Finn and Sage sitting in a booth enjoying themselves. After hearing all about how depressing and annoying Finn can be, it honestly felt nice to see him so happy.

However, I only took about five steps past them when I heard Finn cough violently. I didn't think anything of it, it probably wasn't even Finn. Then I heard him growl 'vervain' which I had learned to be a type of poison for vampires.

Spinning on my heals I notice Finn and Sage looking towards the door. I see Stefan practically baiting them outside. Both Finn and Sage get up to follow him outside. Turning my head I notice Elena and Matt looking suspicious.

I didn't like the feeling that was settling in my stomach. Something bad was going to happen, I just knew it. Unable to help myself, I hurry after Elena and Matt. I knew I couldn't do anything against Stefan but Elena and Matt are human, I might be able to distract them or something.

I follow them towards the back and away from everyone else. I catch a glimpse of a white stake. My mind instantly goes towards White Oak but that didn't make sense, there isn't supposed to be White Oak left. However, it doesn't matter if it were possible or not, it just matters that it's very real.

It didn't take a genius to catch onto their plan. An Original vampire being baited behind the Grill where others are waiting with a White Oak stake. I felt a surge of protectiveness course through me.

Multiple thoughts were racing through my head. I didn't know it the Originals are unlinked or not. This meant if Finn died, my mates would die as well. I couldn't allow that to happen.

I also didn't want Finn to die. I may not know him but he is technically family. Whether my mates liked him or not, he is their brother. He also just reunited with his soulmate and he deserves more time with her, more time to be happy.

Matt and Elena suddenly move through the door. Their movement breaks me from my thoughts and I jump into action. I wasn't able to prevent Elena from shooting him in the stomach but I was able to knock Matt out of the way, preventing him from killing Finn.

My sudden appearance distracts Matt, Elena and Stefan. Finn uses the distraction to his advantage. He pulls the stake out of his body and snatches the White Oak one. Once the White Oak stake is in his possession he disappears with Sage hot on his heels.

"Do you know what you just did?!" Elena snapped. "What are you even doing here?"

"Wait, this isn't the bathroom" I say tapping my chin. "I should go,"

"Wait!" Elena snapped going to grab my arm. I rip it away from her and quickly race back to the main area of the Grill before anybody could stop me. I gravitate back to my sister.

Nervously, I look around. I see Elena, Matt and Stefan watching me. Not knowing what was going through their minds, I quickly grab my phone. I did just foil their plan, I didn't want to stick around if they were going to retaliate against me.

"Kat, are you home?" Elijah instantly answers wondering if he could come over to see her.

"No, not yet" I say through the phone while keeping an eye on Elena, Matt, and Stefan.

"What's wrong?" Elijah asks noticing that my voice was slightly off.

"So, apparently Stefan, Elena, and Matt want you all dead" I tell him.

"We suspected as much," Elijah nods. "Where are you going with this?"

"Well, I don't think they know that you're unlinked" I whisper hoping Stefan couldn't hear me. "You are unlinked right?" I ask quickly.

"Ms. Bennett just finished the spell, we're unlinked" Elijah assures me. "Kat, what is going on?" He asks knowing I haven't gotten to the point yet.

"Well, I think that they think you're still linked because they just tried to kill Finn" I tell him.

"What do you mean they tried to kill Finn?"

"I mean that they have White Oak steaks, which you need to explain to me on how that's even possible, and I just foiled their plan to kill your brother" I explain to him. "They're not exactly happy with me,"

"Where are you?" Elijah asks quickly.

"The Grill,"

"Stay there, I'm coming to you" Elijah says before hanging up. I sigh in relief although I know I'm not out of the clear yet. From Stefan's face, he heard the entire conversation. I just hoped they wouldn't come at me before Elijah arrives.
