*Chapter Eight* [Indebted]
It's been exactly one minute and forty five seconds since I got off the phone with Elijah. My eyes constantly bounced from my phone clock, to the front door of the Grill, and to Stefan. I sat on one of the stools by the pool table. Erica, Tommy and David hardly paid a lick of attention to me, none of them noticing how tense and nervous I look.
I feel like I'm about five seconds from emptying my stomach all over the floor. My heart is hammering in my rib cage. I don't regret saving Finn but I do regret not having a solid escape plan. Now I have to pray nothing will happen before Elijah gets to me.
Stefan, Elena and Matt are standing by each other at the other end of the bar and grill. I can feel their eyes burning in my skin. Stefan looks overly annoyed and seconds away from marching over to me. Elena looks annoyed as well but more curious than anything. Matt simply looks tired and frustrated.
"Oh my God," Erica breathes suddenly taking the seat next to me. I practically leap out of my skin and look at her. "Is it just me or is it hot in here?" She asks fanning herself. It's obvious that she's completely oblivious to the fact that I'm completely freaking out.
I know Stefan is a vampire but I don't know if he's going to retaliate against me in a deadly manner. I don't know what's going through his head, I don't know his thoughts. He could be planning on hurting me, he could be planning on wiping me off the face of the Earth. It doesn't matter what he's planning, he's a vampire and I'm a human. I won't be able to stop him even if I wanted too.
"Are you thirsty? I'm thirsty," Erica mutters standing up. Before I can help myself I spring up and latch onto my sister. "Are you alright? What's wrong?" She asks finally noticing something's off with me.
"Umm..." My eyes glance back towards Stefan. I swallow thickly. "Elijah's coming to pick me up, I'm just a little nervous" I slightly lie with a nervous laugh. Erica instantly brightens.
"Oh, that's great!" She grins. "I can't wait to meet him... I can meet him right?" Erica asks hesitantly.
"Of course you can" I instantly agree. Erica grins.
"Awesome! He's on his way now?" I nod. "Cool, I'm going to get a drink real quick, do you want anything?"
"No... I'm good" I say reluctantly letting her go. Erica nods before going up to the bar. I sit back down and begin to nibble at my finger nails. I go to look at Stefan only to see he's not there. I feel as if my heart has completely stopped in anticipation.
"Kat, right?" I release a shaky breath before turning my head. Stefan stands not even two feet away from me. He has a smile but it's obviously forced and his eyes are very angry.
"Heh, hi" I say awkwardly. "What're you doing here? Hanging out with friends?"
I could die from the awkwardness.
Stefan is obviously unamused by my nervous talk.
"Can we talk?" He asks tilting his head slightly.
"Sure" I say a little too quickly. "What do you wanna talk about?" I fidget in my seat. Stefan raises an eyebrow at me. I give him a smile.
"Can we talk outside?" He asks nodding towards the door.
"I don't think that's a good idea," I laugh a bit while searching around me again hoping to see Elijah. My shoulders drop slightly when I still don't see him.
"Well, I think it is," Stefan says grabbing my arm forcing me to stand up.
"Oh, ok then," I mutter wincing slightly at his tight grip. Stefan drags me around the tables and towards the exit. I look for my sister but can't spot her before Stefan pulls me outside. "Ok, ok, I know you're probably like super angry but umm... please don't kill me"
"He's not going to kill you," My head snaps towards Elena. She's standing by the lamppost. "We just wanna talk," She says.
"Oh," I mutter. "I'm losing feeling in my arm," I say looking at Stefan. He instantly lets go and even mutters a small apology but I don't think he actually meant it. "So... Weather's pretty nice," I say looking up at the night sky.
"Um, yeah" Elena nods slowly. "The weather isn't want we wanna talk about," I wipe my sweaty palms on my shirt while looking towards him. "Do you know what you stopped tonight?"
"I stopped you from killing someone," I snapped wondering where the fuck this confidence is coming from. "You know murder is illegal" I point out.
"And do you know how many people the man you saved has murdered?" Elena asks.
"Well, seeing as he's been in a box the last couple centuries, I'd say not a lot" I shrug. Elena instantly shares a look with Stefan. "Or maybe you're trying to hit towards the others"
"Who are you?" Stefan asks crossing his arms.
"Kat" I shrug feeling the confidence disappearing. "But you know with a 'K' not a 'C'." I run a nervous hand through my hair. "You know, funny story about my name-" I laugh as I feel myself grow closer to an embarrassing ramble.
"What do you know about the Mikaelson's?" Stefan asks cutting me off. I have a brief moment of relief before the anxiety comes back.
"Umm... What do you know?" I ask slowly trying to buy some time. Stefan's expression hardens and he takes a step towards me. I wince expecting the worst when a body appears between the two of us.
"If you value your life, step back" Slowly, I open my eyes and look forward. "You almost succeeded in killing me once, I promise it won't happen again"
"Finn?" I ask slightly walking to the side of him when a gentle hand grabs my wrist and pulls me back. I turn and noticed Sage giving me a small wink.
"Walk away, Salvatore" Finn advises. "My brothers won't be so forgiving, especially when they see the bruise forming on her arm" I glance down wondering how he would know that I'm getting a bruise when I'm wearing long sleeves. I touch my arm lightly and wince knowing that a bruise is indeed forming under the thin long sleeved shirt.
"Stefan, he's right, we should go" Elena says having lost her nerve from earlier. Stefan presses his lips together staring at Finn before looking around him towards me. I instantly shuffle towards Sage. I stare back at Stefan when he suddenly looks behind me. I turn and follow his gaze.
"Elijah," I whisper. Sage lets go of my wrist allowing me to go towards him. I only take a few steps before he suddenly appears in front of me.
"Are you alright?" He asks cupping both sides of my face. I feel all the tension and anxiety instantly leave my body. I don't answer him still feeling the after affect of being so afraid and tense.
I slip my arms into his open suit jacket and wrap them around his waist. His jacket long with his body heat instantly warm my cool arms. I sigh softly as I nuzzle into his chest seeking more comfort.
"It's alright," Elijah whispers holding me close to him. "I'm here now," I feel him kiss the top of my head.
"You should keep a closer eye on her," Sage says from behind me. "I haven't been in town for a while but pissing off two vampires doesn't normally end well," I tense and hug Elijah even tighter.
"It won't end well for them," Elijah growls. "I won't let them touch you" He promises me. "Thank you for watching after her,"
"Well, she saved my life," Finn speaks up. "I'm indebted to her,"
"Don't worry about it" I say reluctantly letting Elijah go so I could turn and face them. Elijah refuses to let me go completely and continues to hug me against him. My back leans against his chest and I hug his arms. "I'm Kat by the way" I introduce myself.
"Sage" The redhead introduces herself. "This is Finn," She wraps her arm around his. "Now, if you'll excuse us, we'll be going" With a blink of an eye they're gone. Elijah turns me back around to face him.
"That has to be the scariest thing I've ever done," I whisper rubbing my face. Elijah's eyes soften and he gently kisses my forehead. "Thank you for coming,"
"I'll always come when you need me," Elijah whispers to me. "Did he hurt you?"
"No, I'm ok," I shake my head not wanting to cause more drama. I hoped that Elijah wouldn't notice the bruise on my arm, I didn't want to create more problems. Although, any problems that would arise would hardly be my fault.
"Thank you for saving my brother," Elijah whispers. I instantly smile at him and sheepishly shrug.
"I thought you all were still linked together and besides, Finn deserves more time with Sage than what he's gotten," I tell him. "It didn't seem fair,"
"No, it wasn't" Elijah shakes his head. "I would feel better if you stayed with me tonight," Elijah says.
"At the mansion?" I ask and Elijah nods.
"Niklaus will soon find out what happened and unless you want the both of us in your room with Erica, then I suggest you spend the night with us"
My eyes instantly widen at the thought of having them over for the night at my place. I could only imagine all the questions and stories Erica would blurt out. Then I paled slightly at the thought of my mother catching them in my room.
"Your place it is," I nod instantly. Elijah smiles pulling me back into his chest. I sigh quietly and cuddle close to him. My arms weave around his waist again. "Is he going to come back for me?" I whisper thinking about Stefan.
"Not if he values the lives of his loved ones," Elijah whispers. I begin to dread the thought of what Elijah, and his brothers, would do if Stefan came after me again. "Don't worry about it. Why don't we get going? You should get some rest"
"Let me text my sister," I say pulling my phone out. After the little confrontation with Stefan I didn't necessarily want to stick around and introduce Elijah to Erica. Instead, I send her a message saying I left with Elijah while promising to introduce him later.
"Would you like to walk or would you like for me to carry you?" Elijah asks.
"Carry me" I say instantly lifting my arms like a child.
"Of course, Princess" Elijah says scooping me up. I laugh a bit and burry my head into his neck. "Hold onto me," He mutter while tightening his grip around me. Once he was satisfied with how I was holding him, he took off. I squealed and held onto him even tighter.
It didn't take long before we arrived at the mansion. Elijah gently set me down on my feet. I stumbled slightly trying to regain my bearings. Elijah holds onto my hand while my brain tries to catch up with my body.
"Holy shit, that's fast" I whisper shaking my head. Elijah smiles slightly. "That has got to be so convenient" I laugh a bit feeling a spike in my adrenaline. "Uh, Elijah?" I ask and he tilts his head towards me. "What exactly are we going to tell Nik?" I ask him.
"I haven't told him why I left so quickly but he will find out eventually," Elijah warns me. "If you want to be the one to tell him, I can be with you"
"Ok," I whisper feeling anxious again.
"He just wants you to be safe," Elijah says grabbing my hand. "Your safety and happiness are all that matters to us. If somebody threatens either of those, we become protective. The only way we can protect you is if you be honest with us,"
"Well, that does make sense" I mutter but still feel anxious about the conversation. Elijah pulls me to his side while walking me up to the house.
"Kat," Klaus smiles instantly coming towards me. "I didn't think you would be coming tonight" He comes to a stop about a foot in front of me. "What happened?" He asks instantly sensing something's wrong.
"Do you have like a sixth sense I should know about?" I ask wondering if I would be able to get away with anything.
"When it comes to you, yes" Klaus nods slightly amused before turning serious. "What is it?"
"Well, I'm assuming that you and your family have been having problems with the Salvatore's and their friends" I say knowing that they wouldn't have tried to kill Finn if the two sides didn't have beef between them. Almost instantly, Klaus's eyes darken.
"What did they do?" He growls clenching his fist. Instinctively, I walk away from Elijah and towards him, despite Elijah's nervousness about me being around an angry Klaus.
Once I was out of Elijah's arms, Klaus pulls me to his chest. I can see there's still concern in his eyes and a lingering hint of anger but he seems more relaxed. I put my hands on his chest and watch as he relaxes even further. I briefly wonder if I truly have this power over his emotions and then further wonder the extent between this power and him, along with his brothers.
"Stefan, Elena and Matt tried to kill Finn while you were all still liked together," I say not even hesitating to add Elena and Matt to the mix. I didn't care for either of them anymore, not that I really did in the first place. They tried to kill my mates and that wasn't ok. "I stopped them,"
"How did you stop them?" Klaus asks slowly. "How could they kill Finn?"
"They have white oak stakes, I don't know how many but they have some and tried to use them on Finn but he managed to get away with one of the stakes. They were angry with me because I stopped them," I further explained.
"I'm going to need more details, love" Klaus says tightening his grip around me. "They're angry with you, did they act on that anger?"
"Well..." My hesitation causes Klaus to tense. "Stefan dragged me out of the Grill to try and talk to me. I didn't tell him anything, I promise" I add quickly. "But me not telling him anything made him annoyed but before he could do anything Finn and Sage stopped him and protected me. Then Elijah got there and they ran"
Klaus takes a moment to process what I told him. I knew I had given him a lot of information within a few seconds. Apparently he hadn't known that Stefan would try to kill them, he hadn't known that they have white oak wood, and he hadn't known about Stefan coming for me.
"Where's Finn and Sage?" Klaus asks.
"Most likely in another state by now," Elijah tells him. Klaus nods not truly caring about his brothers whereabouts.
"Are you alright?" Klaus asks looking at me up and down.
"I'm fine" I promise. "I'm just mentally exhausted, everything was pretty intense and scary" Klaus's face softens.
"I'm sorry you were put in that position, sweetheart" Klaus whispers hugging me. I wince slightly as his arm brushes with mine. Klaus didn't notice it but Elijah did.
"How roughly did Stefan grab your arm?" Elijah wonders. I pull away from Klaus.
"It was more of a gentle tug" I completely lie and they see right through it. "I'm fine, really. He just grabbed my arm and took me outside. That's it. He couldn't have done anything if he tried, Finn and Sage were there quickly-"
"You ramble when you're nervous," Klaus points out. "And when you try to hide something"
"It really is nothing" I assure him.
"Then perhaps you wouldn't mind me rolling up your sleeve to look at your arm," Elijah reaches for my hand but I move away. He gives me a look which I return with a smile.
"Sweetheart, don't fight us" Klaus says sternly. I cave faster than a deck of cards under his stare. I surrender my hand to Elijah. Gently, he rolls my sleeve all the way up. Once he got near the bruise I hiss painfully.
"I'm sorry," Elijah mutters. He gently caresses the inside of my forearm in an attempt to comfort me. I give him a small smile. Another second later and the bruise is revealed.
"Damn, I didn't think it'd be that dark already" I whisper while both Elijah and Klaus growl like animals. I felt slightly awkward by the fact that it completely turned me on.
"You're lucky he didn't break your bloody arm," Klaus snapped and I couldn't help but to agree with him.
"Yeah, it definitely hurts more than it did earlier" I admitted.
"The adrenaline is wearing off" Elijah explains. I glance towards him and meet his gaze. "Would you like some of my blood?" My face instantly screws at the thought of drinking blood.
"Humans and drinking blood don't mix," I shake my head. "Have any pain killers?" I ask.
"I'll get some for you," Elijah says kissing my forehead. "Stay here with Niklaus" He says before leaving.
"Did he do anything other than grab your arm?" Klaus asks and I shake my head. I went to continue to try and calm him down when something catches my attention in the other room. I go to look but Klaus steps in my way. "Trust me, love, you don't wanna know,"
"Ok" I whisper after a moment. I push my curiosity to the side not wanting to further annoy him. "Can I take a shower?" I ask wanting to do something other than just sit and wait for Elijah to come back.
"Sure, follow me" Klaus presses a gentle hand on my back and leads me up the steps.
