Chapter Six: Midnight Talks & Nursery Mishaps
It was past midnight, and the house was quiet—except for the soft hum of music playing from Vinnie's phone. He lay on the nursery floor, arms folded behind his head, staring at the glow-in-the-dark stars Coraline had stuck onto the ceiling.
"Okay," he started, breaking the silence, "but what if he doesn't like me?"
Coraline, who was sitting cross-legged next to him, folding a pile of tiny baby clothes, snorted. "Vinnie, he's literally going to be obsessed with you."
He turned his head to look at her. "You say that, but what if I'm, like... a boring dad?"
She rolled her eyes, placing a folded onesie on the dresser. "You are literally incapable of being boring."
Vinnie huffed. "I don't know, babe. What if I suck at this?"
Coraline paused, her expression softening. "Vinnie." She crawled over to where he lay and propped herself up on her elbow. "You won't."
He looked up at her, a slight frown on his lips. "How do you know?"
She reached out, brushing a stray piece of hair from his forehead. "Because I see how much you already love him. You're the one who talks to my belly every night like he can actually hear you."
"He can hear me," Vinnie muttered.
Coraline smirked. "I know. And you're also the one who panicked when we ran out of the 'right' brand of lotion and drove to three different stores to find it."
Vinnie groaned. "Don't remind me."
"And," she continued, poking his chest, "you're the one who spent three hours assembling the crib only to realize you put the pieces on backward."
Vinnie covered his face with his hands. "That was a low point."
Coraline giggled, gently pulling his hands away. "My point is—you already care so much. That's what makes a great dad, Vinnie. Not whether you get everything right on the first try."
He exhaled slowly, letting her words sink in. "You really think so?"
She smiled, leaning down to kiss his forehead. "I know so."
Vinnie gazed up at her, his heart swelling. "I love you, you know that?"
"I do," she whispered. "And I love you too."
For a moment, they just lay there, the nursery filled with warmth, quiet music, and the occasional tiny kick from baby Milo.
Then—
CRASH.
Both of them jumped. Vinnie shot up instantly. "What was that?!"
Coraline blinked toward the closet. The newly built bookshelf—the one Vinnie had sworn was secure—was now leaning dangerously to one side, books scattered across the floor.
She turned to him slowly, raising an eyebrow. "Vinnie."
Vinnie held up his hands. "Okay, before you say anything—I definitely used the screws this time."
She crossed her arms. "Uh-huh."
"...Most of them."
Coraline groaned, dropping her head into her hands while Vinnie grabbed his phone. "I'm calling Jett."
"It's almost 1 AM."
"He deserves this."
And as Coraline laughed beside him, Vinnie knew—mistakes, chaos, and all—they were going to be just fine.
