Chapter 15
━━━━━━━━━
"Bree. Bree is the one who has been helping the competition. She's the one we needed to watch out for. And I missed it. I was blinded, when she could obviously see clearly this whole time. She never loved me. She just wanted the information." Chase said as he let he tears fall. He closed his eyes until his father's hand rested on his shoulder.
"Chase. I know for a fact that you and Bree had something. She is probably working for Greenberg Enterprises, but that doesn't mean that she never loved you. I can tell by the way she looks at you. The way that she came back. She was gone for three months, Chase. And she still can back. How does she treat you? Like a CEO, or like a regular person?" Donald asked. Chase thought back over his time with her. She had always treated him like a person, not like the future CEO of a major company.
"Like a regular person." Chase said simply. Donald nodded.
"Someone couldn't keep up an act like that, Chase." Donald said. Chase shook his head.
"Even if she does feel that way about me, she was still helping him out. She was basically giving them every project that we have ever come up with. I don't know if I can forgive her." Chase mumbled the last part as he looked to his father. Donald nodded knowingly.
"I know. But I think you need to give her a chance to explain." Donald finished before he walked unit the living room with his things.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Chase." Donald called as he got into the elevator. Chase waved half heartedly as the doors slid closed. Chase breathed. He couldn't handle this. His phone rang only to reveal Adam was calling. Chase rolled his eyes and answered.
"What do you want?" Chase hissed as he began to pick up his things. Adam sighed.
"Chase, can you come down here? I need to talk with you." Adam asked hopefully. Chase sighed and answered.
"Actually, you can just come up here. My dad just left so we can hang out on the top floor." Chase suggested as he wiped the tears off his face. Chase entered the code and sent the elevator down to the 8th floor.
"Thanks. I'll be up there in a sec." Adam said before he hung up. Chase breathed and move to sit on the couch. He waited as Adam exited the elevator and came to sit by him after he set his things down.
"What's up?" Chase asked sarcastically. If Adam had been here, he must have seen Bree. He must have figured t out. Chase felt numb. He couldn't even register what emotions he was feeling.
"Chase, this will be hard to tell you but I saw-"
"You saw Bree? Yeah, I figured that out. She's working for Greenberg and is giving them all of our corporate secrets." Chase bit out. Adan's eyes grew wide.
"Wow. How did you figure that out?" Adam asked quizzically. He was genuinely wondering how Chase was able to come up with everything so fast. Well, there was the fact that he and his father were complete genius', but who's counting.
"Bree had this pen. She has it with her everywhere she goes. And she used it to prop open the door when she snuck up here. I found it." Chase said as he threw the pen to Adam. He caught it without hesitation before he examined the pen.
"Yep, this was the one she used to fill out the application." Adam said simply as he threw the pen back to Chase. Chase let the pen fall to his side as he ran his fingers through his hair. Adam sighed.
"Let's get you home. You can figure this whole thing out, right here and now. It's extremely late and you're tired, which makes it worse. Come on." Adam said as he lifted Chase off the couch and stood him up in front of him. Chase laughed slightly at his best friend.
"Thanks, Adam. I'll see you tomorrow." Chase said as he began to pick up his things. Adam shook his head.
"Oh, you're not done with me yet. I'm walking you to your car. No questions asked." Adam stated as he took Chase's arm and drug him over to the elevator. Chase leaned against the wall as Adam hit the ground floor button. This was horrible. Within a 2 minute span, Chase had to find all of this out for himself. Bree didn't even offer to tell him. That's how he knew she didn't love him. She would have told him by now if she did. Chase felt the elevator stop as Adam pushed him out into the dimly lit hallway. They walked calmly out the alley way door and over to the parking lot. Adam stopped by Chase's car as he waited for him to open the door.
"Adam, you don't have to babysit me. I'm fine." Chase said bluntly. Adam simply rolled his eyes and patted Chase on the back. He knew the only reason he was lashing out was because of Bree.
"Okay, Chase. I'll see you tomorrow." Adam said before walking across the parking lot to his car. Chase sighed as Adam pulled away, leaving him and his car alone in the lot. Chase glanced up at the sky to see it was about to rain. He shook his head and got into his car with only one thought on his mind.
Perfect timing.
****************************************************************
"God no." Chase mumbled as his alarm went off that next day. He hadn't gotten to bed until 2 am this morning. Now, it was 7. And he was still exhausted. He considered calling in sick but he knew, everyone would see right through him. And to make it worse, Bree would probably call to make sure he was okay... Or even stop by. Chase shuttered at the thought of her. But he had made up his mind. He had to keep this "relationship" going until one of the companies released the bionic chip. Whoever did first, won. And after that, nothing else would matter. Chase knew at that moment, it would be perfect to tell Bree he knew everything. If this plan had to come earlier, that was just too bad.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Ugh." Bree groaned as her alarm went off. She had decided to go to bed the second she got home. Bt she hadn't gotten any rest. All she could think about was Chase.
Chase
She was hurting him. She liked Marcus. And she couldn't, because that would only hurt him more. She was already giving Marcus, his enemy, their plans, and now, she may be falling for the competition. Bree shook her head and got dressed. She was ready in 20 minutes and was driving down to Greenberg Enterprises. Bree parked out front of the large building. She slipped the flash drive out of her pocket, contemplating on whether or not to keep it, or give it up. She had a choice, and that choice, would change everything. She could chose to give this to him, and ruin Chase. Or, she could trash it, and lose Chase. The first way, she may be able to put him back together. But the second, hurt both her and him. She loved him too much to have him find out that way. Bree sighed and got out of the car and walked into the building. Bree walked the practically empty halls until she reached Marcus' door. She looked at the window to see a single lamp was on. Bree closed her eyes as she knocked on the door. Instantly, she heard shuffling from the other side. Soon enough, Marcus stood in front of her with bags under his eyes. Bree smiled slightly as he motioned for her to enter the office. She turned as she reached his desk to see him closing the door.
"What's up?" He asked simply. He watched as Bree looked around the office and pulled the flash drive out of her pocket. Marcus' eyes grew wide as he saw it. He didn't believe for a second that she was actually doing this. She was supposedly in love with Chase, and yet, she was willing to do this. Give it to him. The competition. Marcus breathed out in disbelief as he walked forward and held his hand out. He waited patiently as he saw the internal battle Bree was having. Her eyes began to water and she dropped the flash drive into Marcus' hand. He frowned in sadness as Bree looked down at her feet and raced out of his office.
"Bree wait!" He called. Bree stopped at the end of the hall and waked as Marcus ran over to her. He placed his hand on her arm and turned her around to face him.
"Bree, you don't have to do this." Marcus said as he held the flash drive out to her. Bree shook her head quickly.
"I have to. Otherwise Chase will find out about this and I can't handle that-"
"Bree, stop! I won't tell Chase if you don't give this too me. If I hadn't have gotten this a week ago, I would have told him. But now, things have changed. You've changed. I don't want to be the one keeping you and Chase apart. My only reservation is you've got to tell him anyway. But I want you to tell, when you're ready. I'm sorry I did this to you." Marcus apologized. Bree stood back in disbelief. How could he do this? He was supposed to take the flash drive and delete her from his life. He wasn't supposed to give it back, and be nice about it. He was suppose to yell at her for not getting it three months ago.
"Marcus. What are you doing?" Bree asked as she tried her hardest to stop crying. Marcus sighed.
"I'm doing what's right. I wanted revenge on Chase for all those years in high school, and I brought you into it. I shouldn't have. So now, I want you to have the say in what happens next. Not me. Not my dad, not Chase's dad, just you and Chase." Marcus said simply. Bree smiled as she moved over to kiss him on the check. He smiled as she pulled away.
"Thank you." She whispered. Marcus turned to face her, only to leave their faces barely an inch from each other. Bree's heart began to beat quicker as she felt Marcus lean in. Bree moved up to him as he connected their lips. He kissed her lightly and pulled away before Bree could even realize what happened. The kiss left her speechless. Bree smiled and leaned in again. This time, taking matters into her own hands. She wrapped her arms around Marcus' neck as he did the same around her waist. He pulled her closer as she kissed him. They pulled away at the same time only to smile at each other.
"I like you, Bree. A lot." Marcus breathed as he pulled away a bit farther.
"I like you too. A lot." Bree said mocking Marcus' tone. Bree smiled. Only for the seconds she was with Marcus, forgetting completely about her betrayed boyfriend, who was waiting patiently for her back at Davenport Industries.
********************************************************************
"I'll miss you." Marcus said with a smile as he pecked Bree on the lips. She laughed into the kiss and began to walk down the hall.
"I'll probably be back later." She said happily. Marcus smiled down at her.
"But even a minute away from you feels like forever." Marcus whispered with a smile as he turned and walked back to his office. Bree smiled happily as she exited the building and made her way to her car. She glanced down at her phone to see it was 8:50. She would be right on time for work, just like Chase liked it.
Chase!
What was she thinking? She was off making out with Marcus while Chase was completely clueless as to what she was doing. Bree reached into her pocket and felt around for the flash drive only to remember she had left it in Marcus' office. She sighed and sat down in the car as before texting him.
Hey, I left the flash drive up there. Can I pick it up later?
Bree sat back as she waited for his reply.
Yeah sure. See u later ;)
Bree sighed in relief. She had thought Marcus would have done something with it. Now all she had to do was face Chase after all of this. She rested her head against the wheel as she thought. She felt horrible. She didn't even like Marcus as much as she liked Chase. In fact, she loved Chase. Why was she so willing to kiss him? And why was she able to completely forget about Chase while she was with Marcus?
Bree started the car and began to drive over to Davenport Industries. Within five minutes Bree had parked and was making her way up the stairs to the fourth floor. As Bree opened the door and walked over to her desk. She saw Adam waiting expectantly for her at her desk.
"Hey Adam." Bree said simply as he stood up. He sighed as she set her things down and turned to face him.
"Can I talk to your for a second?" Adam asked. Bree frowned in confusion but nodded. He smiled and led her down the hall to the empty conference room. Adam shut the door and turned to face her.
"Bree... I know everything." Adam said simply. Bree felt her eyes grow wide.
"What?" She asked. Adam moved to sit on the table as Bree stood off in the corner.
"I mean. I know about Marcus." He said. Bree could feel the tears coming up into her eyes.
"Look, he kissed me first and then things just-"
"Wow, wait. You two kissed!" Bree stopped abruptly. She had thought he meant this morning.
"Yes and no. This morning I... Well I went..." Bree left off, not wanting to reveal why she was actually working here.
"You went over there to give him the flash drive. Yeah, I saw you last night. Which is actually why I wanted to talk with you." Adam said. Bree leaned against the wall and let the tears slid down her face. She had been beating herself up about this for the last three months, and now, she was cracking. She had done everything wrong. And she hated herself for it.
"Look, I want you to know that it started out that way. I was just here to get information. But Chase was different, he still is. I fell hard for him. And now everything's even more screwed up because Marcus kissed me and I really have no idea if I like him, and now I'm rambling." Bree finished as she turned to face Adam who was smiling.
"It's okay. I like to hear how crazy about my best friend you are. Here he is thinking you never liked him and here you are confessing your undying love for him in front if his best friend. Are you okay?" Adam asked as he made his way over to Bree. She stopped him and walked over instead. She took a seat in one of the 20 chairs around the large conference table.
"What do you mean by Chase thinks I never liked him?" Bree asked barely above a whisper. Adam sighed.
"He found out it was you. You left the pen upstairs when you left last night. He thinks that you just dated him to get extra information." Adam explained. Bree looked down at her feet as she thought about her next words.
"But I love him. I'm in love with him." Bree said in complete seriousness. She looked up to see Adam smiling happily. Then, his smile slowly faded.
"This sucks." Adam said simply as he began to walk around the room. Bree frowned.
"I know it does." Bree said. Adam shook his head.
"We'll yeah, this whole thing sucks. But Chase is the most stubborn person anyone could see get involved with. He's not going to believe that you were getting information and falling in love with him at the same time. Especially after your whole Marcus adventure. When was that?" Adam asked as he crossed his arms and leaned against the far wall.
"This morning." Bree mumbled just loud enough for Adam to hear. Adam's mouth fell open.
"Oh, now he's never gonna believe you." Adam said as he walked around to sit next to Bree. Bree sighed and threw he head into her hands.
"Why does this have to be so complicated?" Bree asked. Adam shrugged.
"I don't know. But I think you should probably talk with him. I know for a fact that he's planning some kind of evil revenge on you and Marcus." Adam said. Bree's face fell as she heard those words. He hated her. He hated her so much that he was going to he revenge. Bree shook her head and instantly decided to deal with this now.
"Okay. Can I talk to you later? I think I need to talk with him." Bree asked as she rose from her chair. Adam nodded and handed his phone to her with the contacts pulled up. Bree smiled as she put her number in.
"I'll see you later, Bree." Adam said before he walked out of the conference room. Bree walked over to her desk as Adam made his way to the stairwell. Bree sighed and knocked on Chase's door.
"Come in." He replied bluntly before Bree warily opened the door. She walked in to see Chase signing papers right and left.
"Make it quick, Bree. I've got a lot to do." Chase bit out. Bree could feel her heart cracking at every word Chase said.
"It will take more than a quick talk Chase." Bree started. Chase looked up to see the tears already falling down her face. Chase looked worriedly up at her.
"What's wrong?" He asked as he came over. Bree shook her head and motioned for him to sit back down.
"You hate me. You think that I only dated you for Marcus. And to top it all off... We kissed this morning." Bree whispered. Chase backed up and fell against his desk as he heard those words.
"You kissed him?" Chase hissed as he let his mind wander to his Bree... and Marcus.
"Technically, he kissed me. I was so upset about you though, I know that isn't an excuse, but I kissed him back because it made me forget about how I was hurting you. I love you so much, Chase. I'm in love with you, And I've been dying inside all night and morning because of how I've treated you. I got myself into this though, and if you never want to see me again... I'll leave and both you and Marcus. You two will never see me again." Bree finished. She began sobbing about halfway through her speech. Chase sighed as he looked up to her. He couldn't bear to lose her, to never see her again. But he also felt like he couldn't trust her again.
"Look, Bree. I love you so much. But after all of this... I don't think I will ever be able to trust you again. I think it would be for the best if we just..." Bree nodded as Chase left off. It was only ten in the morning and she had been crying for three hours straight. Bree tried to calm herself down as Chase nodded and went back to work. How could he feel nothing?
"Chase?" Bree whispered. Chase looked up with sadness in his eyes.
"What?" He stated with bitterness evident in his voice. He got up and walked around his desk to face Bree head on.
"I'll miss you and... I'll never forget about you." Bree said just above a whisper. Chase smiled as she began to walk out of the office.
"I won't forget about you, either." He whispered as she shut the door. Bree sucked in a much needed breath as she let Chase's words replay in her mind.
I'll never forget about you
She packed up her desk for the second time in four months. She got out her phone to see Adam had told her to meet him in the parking lot when she got done. She sighed and walked out of Davenport Industries for the last time. She walked out into the parking lot to find Adam standing just by her car. She smiled slightly as he stood up straight and took the box out of her hands.
"What happened?" Adam asked quietly as Bree took the box back from him and placed it in the car. Bree shut the door and leaned against it.
"We're done. He pretty much fired me. And I'm going to have to be okay with it." Bree said simply. Adam sighed and motioned for Bree to come closer. She wrapped her arms around Adam as he wrapped his arms around her back. Bree could feel her eyes watering again.
"It will be okay, Bree." Adam whispered before Bree pulled away. She looked up out of the corner of her eye and saw Chase looking down at them through the window.
"Chase is going to kill you." Bree whispered as she slightly nodded her head towards Chase's window. Adam smirked as he realized what she meant.
"I don't care. I can probably take him anyway." Adam said as he brushed off the subject.
"Thank you, Adam." Bree said as she began to open the door. Adam placed his hand over Bree's to stop her from opening the door.
"I'll see what I can do about Chase. And in the meantime, call me if you need anything. Especially if it has to do with the bozo upstairs or the idiot down the street."
