Alpha William
A black sedan pulled up to the packhouse, I could just about make out a large male in the driver's seat, it was William, I stood straighter. Osckar was at my side, he also stood tall with his feet slightly apart, he left a small gap between us making me frown.
William got out of his car and he straightened out his jacket before closing the door. Two other men stepped out from the passenger sides and I sensed that one was his beta and the other must have just been a regular wolf with no ranking.
"William," Osckar said in greeting with a slight nod.
In a few strides, William reached us, his arm outstretched in greeting Osckar not bothering to look my way. I watched as they grasped each other's forearms in the traditional meeting of alphas. It was to show respect and to acknowledge the position the other was taking.
"It's good to see you Osckar, in better circumstances, I wouldn't be seeing you at all." He said, his voice was gruff but his tone was friendly.
"Likewise, hopefully, I don't have to see you for another few years after this."
I was baffled at their conversation, they were both serious and I guess their dislike for each other was mutually acknowledged in other circumstances. The saying of keeping your enemies closer was ringing true here today.
Osckar turned in my direction, "This is my Luna, Calla."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Calla." He said and grasped my forearm, in the same manner, he did with Osckar.
"You too," I said forcing a smile on my face, if Osckar can be cordial then so could I.
"This is my beta Jayce and this is Ben." He said, gesturing behind him.
Jayce was slender in build, he wasn't as big as his alpha but I'd learned not to judge a person's fighting abilities based on their looks. Ben was much younger than the other two, he was probably my age or even younger, I assumed he was here for training purposes.
We walked to Osckar's office, which I was glad to say was much cleaner than his study. It was modernised, with a black glass desk in the back but right in the forefront was a small seating area. One two-seater leather chair facing two single armchairs and a coffee table keep the space in the middle. Roman was waiting there standing at the side of the room, he inclined his head as both alphas walked in and shot me a look as if to say I should be on my best behaviour.
I pulled my tongue at him, his eyebrows shot up in shock but he schooled his features back into an impassive expression just as quickly.
"You know there wasn't a real need for you to be here," Osckar said leaning on his desk. He wasn't about to sit down in front of another alpha, not unless they both did it at the same time. It was an ego thing more than our true nature but it wasn't shocking that they both saw it as an act of submission.
"Oh, I know you're perfectly capable of taking care of this mess yourself." William said, folding his arms across his chest, "It just so happens that this was emailed to me the other day." He said, pulling out a piece of paper from the inside of his jacket and unfolded it.
It was the wanted picture of me, the picture Alpha Darius had sent out to all the packs. I shifted ever so slightly, it was just another reminder that my parents were dead. I swallowed deeply but I wasn't about to cry with everyone in this room.
Osckar didn't say or do anything and neither did Roman, their silence obviously made William slightly uncomfortable.
"Should I even ask if you're going to turn her in?"
"That's none of your damn business William, I suggest you walk away now and go back to your pack." His voice was calm but there was a promise of pain if William didn't listen.
"It is my business when she was in my territory not so long ago for trespassing and especially if I know where she's currently staying. I could just inform Alpha Darius of her whereabouts."
Please tell him you already called to arrange for me to get my parents things. I mind linked to Osckar.
I hadn't gotten around to it yet. He replied.
I balled my hands into a fist. He could organise an initiation but not my arrangements to go to my parents funeral or to gather their things. I kept my mouth shut, this was not the time or place.
"She's in my hands now and I can guarantee you that she will get to speak with Alpha Darius soon enough."
"What makes you think I won't call Darius as soon as I leave this place?" William asks.
Osckar clenched his jaw. "Because you know I would kill you before you could."
William had the audacity to laugh "You wouldn't kill me, you know it will start a war for you, I have allies Osckar, you have no other packs that will stand by your side."
Osckar smirked and darkness shadowed his eyes, "I don't need allies William."
"Don't be such an arrogant fool! You'd never win against four packs."
Osckar sighed in boredom now, "Are you done trying to intimidate me? Let's talk about that rogue problem we have or you can scurry on home."
William grinned then looked at me, his grin morphed into a sadistic smile, his dark eyes told me exactly what he was thinking. Not backing down I held his stare, I wasn't about to be bullied by a power-hungry alpha.
Osckar's growl pulsated through the room, "Get out."
William laughed and exited the room, his head even tilted back as he walked through the threshold. Roman followed closely and disappeared down the hall, presumably to make sure William left the property. I was still staring at the door when Osckar slammed it shut, the force of it closing vibrated across the hardwood floors. He cursed under his breath, pacing a little before he walked back to his desk picking up the phone.
"Alpha Darius." He said, "It's Osckar, I need to arrange a meeting with you as soon as possible." It was silent on this end of the line while Darius spoke. "It's about the girl who you claimed to have killed your beta." There was a beat of silence. "Great see you then."
"What was that?" I asked in a panic.
"I arranged a meeting with your former alpha." He said as if he was talking to a child.
"Don't play dumb, I know what the call was about. Why hadn't you organised this before?" I shook my head at him, "Do you realise that I could have already missed my parent's funeral?"
He stepped towards me.
"Don't," I said, holding back the tears that had been threatening to spill over at the thought, "You had time to prepare for my initiation but you couldn't do that one thing for me."
His jaw clenched, "It wasn't like that, Darius was out when I called, and I couldn't get in touch with him."
I laughed harshly, that shouldn't have stopped him from trying.
"Look," he said his voice was controlled but I didn't like his tone, "We're going to see him tomorrow, we can talk about it then."
I nodded my head but not in agreement.
"And you're not afraid of making more enemies." I said taking a step closer, "Do you want to risk the pack?"
"If you hadn't noticed, the pack is in a perfectly safe location, we're on high ground, our vantage point is better than most. We'll see anyone coming before they get here, I have safety procedures in place for the young and old, and my men are well trained, better than most actually."
His arrogance was beginning to annoy me but I couldn't fault him for having a safety net if war did come knocking on his doorstep.
"Calla, why don't you go find Bay or something, I need to take care of the rogues now while they're unaware."
"What if there aren't any rogues?" I said my mind was spinning, "William might have been just using it as a pretence, he clearly didn't come to talk strategy."
It was possible he'd set up a trap to finally wipe out his nemesis, he'd made it clear that while they were on speaking terms, he'd not be doing Osckar any favours.
"I sent out scouts a few days ago, they confirmed there were rogues."
"I just wish there wasn't so much drama," I said, rolling my head back in frustration. Was there ever going to be a moment when I could finally have peace>
"It's nearly an everyday occurrence for me, I don't see this as drama."
"Okay, fine. Go sort out the rogue problem. I'll just get myself acquainted with the pack."
Osckar smiled, "That's the spirit."
