The Flare
It was almost completely silent, except for the heavy breathing of the boys around me.
Suddenly, behind me there was light. We all turned around and faced the door.
I pushed it open and stepped outside.
The boys followed me out. Thomas was the last out, looking down either side of the corridor. Apart from the light above us, there was no other source of light as far as we could see.
I heard a loud click from behind me and I turned around. In the distance, I could see lights turning on one by one. Each making a loud clicking noise when it turned on.
We followed Thomas, who had taken the lead and started walking down the same way the lights had gone.
We walked for what seemed like hours but probably wasn't very long at all. We finally found a door. Around the handle, there was rust. The doors colour was faded and when Thomas pushed the handle down, you could tell it needed oil. Above the door there was a sign.
Exit.
"Seriously?" Frypan asked the question that everyone was thinking. No-one had said anything yet and his voice carried down the path.
I heard the sirens on the other side of the door and I could see the lights flickering even before Thomas pushed the door open on its squeaky hinges.
There were bodies littering the floor and on the right side there was a glass window that revealed two bodies on top of operating tables with a white cloth on top of them.
I gripped Newt's hand and he turned to look at me.
I saw Thomas kick a gun out of a doctors hand. I don't know how I knew what it was but something told me that if you gave me one I could disassemble it, reassemble it and tell you what each part did.
At the end of the hallway, there was a set of glass doors. Thomas pushed them open and we all filed inside.
I could see a large black table in the middle of the room and it had steps to walk on top of it and computers on either side of it. On the other side of the room there was a light that was showering sparks every few seconds and I made a mental note not to get too close.
Newt dragged me to an outer table that had images of a brain on it.
"So they were watching us." He said angrily.
I saw Thomas push a button and on my right, a screen came on. Ava Page was sitting at a desk.
"Hello, my name is Doctor Ava Page and I am director of operations at the World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department or W.I.C.K.E.D for short." She paused.
"If you're watching this that means you have successfully completed the Maze Trials. I wish I could be there to congratulate you in person but circumstances seem to have . . . prevented it." Doctors were rushing about behind her.
"I feel right now that you all must be feeling confused, angry, frightened. I can only assure you that everything that has happened to you. Everything we have done to you, is for a reason." She paused again.
"You won't remember but the sun has scorched our world. Billions of lives lost to fire, famine." The screen flicked from images of fire and burnt vehicles.
"Suffering on a global scale. The fallout was unimaginable." The screen flashed with more images of burnt cities and burnt people. Dead people.
"What came after was worse." She continued.
"We call it the Flare. A deadly virus that attacks the brain. " the screen showed us a disease attacking brain cells. It then flicked to someone showing us a brain that was covered in blue and black patches.
"It is violent, unpredictable and incurable." The screen showed us a man strapped to an operation table. He was covered in blue and black veins. His skin was an unusual pinkish colour and there was a trail of black blood oozing out of his mouth. His eyes were demonic and his teeth were rotted. It was disgusting.
"Or so we thought. In time, a new generation was born that could survive the virus. Suddenly, there was a reason to hope for a cure, but finding it would not be easy. The young would have to be tested, even sacrificed in harsh environments where their brain activity could be monitored." The doctors were almost all gone now.
"All in an effort to see what makes them different. What makes you different." She explained.
"You may not realise it but your very important. Unfortunately, your trials have only just begun. As you'll no doubt discover, not everyone agrees with our methods. Progress is slow, people are scared."
"It may be too late for us, for me but not for you." She said.
It was then that I noticed the men in black that were breaking into the room and gunning down doctors. I managed to catch a glimpse of a logo on their uniform. It was a tree.
"The outside world awaits."
She started to pull out a gun from her pocket.
"Remember." She placed it against the side of her head.
"W.I.C.K.E.D is good."
Bang!
The gun went off and Thomas looked away.
I looked to see what he was looking at and I saw a body of a woman in white.
We all looked at the body. It wasn't her. It couldn't be, could it?
Next to the office, a door opened. We turned to face it.
"Is it over?" Chuck asked
"She said we're important. What do we do now?" Newt asked.
"I don't know but let's get out of here." Thomas said. He started to walk towards the doors when we heard an unmistakable voice.
"No."
Gally.
Thomas made to go to him but I stuck my hand out to stop him.
"He's been stung." I told him. There were blue veins on his neck and there were tears sliding down his face.
Gally was holding the gun that Thomas had kicked before in his right hand.
"We can't leave." He said.
"We're already out. We're free." I told him. The gun was shaking in his hand.
"Free? You think we're free out there?" he waved a hand at the door.
"No. No there's no escape from this place." He raised the gun at me and Thomas instinctively raised his hands. I saw Chuck move slightly toward me.
"Just put the gun down, Gally." Thomas asked. My heart was beating quickly and it was pulsing through my ears.
"Gally, you're not thinking straight. You're not." I told him.
"Yeah, we can help you." Thomas added.
"Just put down the gun."
"I belong in the Maze. We all do." Gally said sadly before a spear was suddenly embedded in his chest and a gunshot was fired.
I expected to feel pain but I didn't. That when I noticed Chuck.
"Thomas." He said before collapsing.
"Chuck?" Thomas asked concernedly. Blood was seeping through his clothes.
We couldn't do much but watch as our youngest Glader died in Thomas's arms.
Chuck held out his hand and Thomas took it. He revealed it to see a small clay doll in his hand.
"Take it." He wheezed.
"No. You're going to give it to them yourself remember, I told you that." Thomas pleaded.
"Thank you." He said.
"Thank you."
Chuck took his last breath and I felt something sweep over me.
Thomas was screaming and I was falling onto the floor. There were voices and people and men in black with guns wrestling Thomas and I up. Thomas managed to get free and he crumpled beside Chuck's body. I snapped out of it and shook the mans hands off me.
I ran with the others, never looking back, not knowing if Thomas was following.
We were led onto a helicopter and the door closed when Thomas slid in behind me.
I turned to the man who was taking to us.
"-ou guys okay? You're safe now."
The helicopter took off and we rose around the walls of the Maze. It would have been beautiful if I didn't know what had happened there. Who had been lost there. I noticed a sign painted on the side of a wall.

I turned back to Newt. He was watching me and before I could say anything, his lips were on mine.
And it felt so wrong given the fact that we'd just lost Chuck but so right because I realised that I had wanted this for a long time. I had wanted this since I first saw that head pop over the edge of the box. I had wanted this since I first saw those brown eyes and his beautiful smile that lit up his whole face and seemed to make him look somehow younger. I had wanted him.
He pulled apart from me and his beautiful brown eyes peered into mine.
"We're free."

And we're done.
I'm just going to say that I felt very one-sided writing this. There was no commenting going on. Lol.
I'm thinking about writing the Scorch Trials into a book but I don't know. There will be an epilogue in a sec.
I love you guys,
Xx.
