Grief Serum
As soon as we made it back, we went to talk with Newt. Gally was there as well.
"She found this." Thomas said.
"It was inside a Griever. Last night I pulled it out of the body but I dropped it when I heard another one nearby." I said.
"It's the same logo that's on our supplies." Newt observed.
"Yeah, that proves that whoever put us here obviously made the Grievers." Thomas said.
"Isn't this the first thing you've found in years, Minho?" I asked. He nodded.
"We have to go back out there. Who knows where this might lead us." Thomas said.
Newt was silent as he held the cylinder and looked over at Gally for his opinion.
"You see what he's trying to do, right?" He started. Here we go.
"First he breaks our rules and now he wants us to abandon them completely. The rules are the only thing that's ever held us together! Why now are we questioning that?" He argued.
"If Alby was here, you know he'd agree with me." He said.
I found out off Minho on the way back that Alby had been stung when they went out into the Maze.
"These shanks, need to be punished." He said, pointing at Thomas and I. He was slowly starting to convince Newt. I could see it.
"Your right. They broke the rules. One night in the pit and no food." Newt decided.
"Oh, come on Newt. You really think that's going to stop her from going into the Maze?" Gally argued.
"No, and we can't just have non-Runners going into the Maze whenever they feel like it. So let's make it official. Starting from tomorrow, you're a Runner." Newt said.
"Wow." Gally said before leaving the room. Minho nodded and left as well.
"Thank you." I said. He nodded.
I hesitated slightly before leaning over and embracing Newt in a hug. He stiffened and leant away slightly. As I pulled back, I gave him a small kiss on the cheek. I could see his cheeks redden.
"Thank you." I said again.
Minho, Thomas and I left the Homestead and walked towards the Deadheads.
"What was that?" Thomas asked. I shoved his shoulder and walked past him.
"Where are we going?" I asked Minho.
"You'll see. Thomas hasn't seen this either yet." He answered cryptically.
We walked for about another ten minutes or so. I could see a shack just ahead.
When we went inside there was a large cloth on top of a round table like object in the middle of the room.
Minho walked up to it and ripped the cloth off. It was a table, I was right but there were hundreds of little sticks that were set up in the middle. They were in a pattern and I could see that the square in the middle was the glade.
"It's the Maze, isn't it?" I asked. Minho nodded.
"All of it."
"All of it? I thought you guys were still mapping it?" Thomas questioned.
"There's nothing left to map. I've run every inch of it myself." He paused.
"Every cycle. Every pattern. If there was a way out, I would have found it by now." He said sullenly.
"Why haven't you told anyone?" Thomas asked.
"Let me guess. It was Alby's choice." I said. Minho sighed.
"He said it was better if people thought there was a chance we could actually get out but maybe now, we have a real chance."
He pulled out the cylinder and placed it on the table.
"See this?" he asked, pointing to an area on the map.
"About a year ago, we started exploring these outer sections and we found these numbers printed on the walls." He pointed to the rock in front of him. It had a one on it.
"Sections one through to eight. See the way it works is, every night, the Maze changes. It opens up a new section. So today, section six was open and tomorrow it'll be four, than eight, than three and so on. The pattern always stays the same." Minho explained.
"So what's so special about sevon?" I asked.
"I don't know but last night when you killed that Griever, section sevon was open. I think it must be where it comes from and tomorrow, the three of us are going to take a closer look." He said.
Thomas nodded and I stayed silent. Processing the new information.
Before any of us could say anything, I saw Newt heading towards the small shack, holding a knife.
"Mind if I borrow you?" Newt asked. I shrugged.
"See you guys later?" I asked. They nodded.
I followed Newt back to the Glade.
"What's up?" I asked him.
He stopped.
"It looks peaceful, doesn't it." He said. He was looking at the Glade.
"Yeah, it does." I responded, still curious about what it is he wants.
"It never used to be this way." He told me.
"That's why Gally is so protective to the rules. They establish order."
He started walking again, this time towards the doors. Once we were close, he turned and moved towards the wall on the right.
"You're one of us now and you need to know what that means." He told me while placing the knife in my hands.
The wall had names cut into it all over. Some of them were crossed out.
"The ones that are crossed out. They're dead aren't they?" I asked. Newt nodded.
"There's a lot of crossed names on this wall." I muttered.
Newt lightly pushed me in the direction of the wall.
"Put yours up." He told me softly.
I gripped the knife tighter and walked forward. I saw Newt's name and I smiled. There was a space next to his and I chose that.
The knife sunk into the wall like butter and it wasn't long before my name was embedded in the wall with the others.
When I turned around, Newt was watching me with a small smile.
"What?" I asked. He shook his head.
"Nothing."
He reached inside his pocket and pulled out two vials with blue liquid in them.
"These were in a box with your name on it the day you got here. Don't ask me why I was going through your stuff but I found those. I took them. I don't even know why but I did."
He passed them to me.
"Thanks. I think." I said. He smiled.
My head randomly started bursting with pain and I fell onto my knees.
"What's wrong?" Newt asked in a panic.
I screamed.
"Good news, Dr Page. The Grief Serum works and can now be sent into the Trials." A girl in a lab coat said. I had been talking to the Dr first but that was fine if the Grief Serum worked. I could settle with being interrupted for that.
"Good. Show me." Ava replied.
The girl produced two vials of blue liquid. The vials were protected by an aluminium casing that had the shorter version of W.I.C.K.E.D on it. the button at the end of the casing must inject the serum into the blood stream or wherever it was supposed to go.
"Very nice. We'll send them up soon but not yet." Ava said.
"Ravyn?" Newt was asking me hurriedly.
I was on the grass and Newt was hovering over me with a worried expression on his face.
"I know what they are. it's called Grief Serum and it cures you if you get stung." I rushed out while I tried to stand up.
"Wait, what?"
"Never mind but we have to get it to Alby." I told him.
I picked up the dropped vials and began to run to the Homestead where I knew Alby was being kept.
