Blades
Alby looked bad. He was being restrained with cloth around his arms that were tied to his chest had a few nasty veins sticking out as a very noticeable blue. His wound was getting worse.
"How do you even know what this stuff is?" Newt asked me.
"Long story." I replied.
"Alright well the rest of us don't know what this stuff is or who sent it or why it came up with you. I mean, for all I know, this stuff might kill him." Newt reasoned.
"He's already dying. Look at him. How could this possibly make this any worse?" I reasoned back.
"Alright." Newt finally caved.
He passed the vial back to me and I stepped forward. I glanced back at Newt one more time and positioned the vial on his chest.
I was just about to click the button when Alby opened his eyes. In the low light they looked demonic as he started trying to attack me.
Jeff and Newt were trying to hold him down and I managed to get free.
"You shouldn't be here!" He growled at me.
I stepped around Jeff and plunged the vial down and clicked the button. Immediately, he calmed down.
"Well that worked?" Jeff said questioningly.
"Alright, from now on, somebody stays here and watches him around the clock." Newt ordered.
We stayed in silence for a minute and I noticed Gally in the shadows.
"Hey. Sundown you guys. Time to go." He told Thomas and I.
Gally was holding a torch and leading us to the Slammer.
"Why do you hate us so much?" I asked him.
"Everything started going wrong the minute you two showed up." He answered.
"First Ben, then that kid and then Alby."
Thomas and I stayed silent.
We watched as Gally opened two of the cells and Thomas jumped into the first. The second one was opened and I climbed in.
"Gally." I started. He looked at me before starting to lock up my cell.
"You know we can't stay here forever, right?" I asked. He looked at me but didn't say anything. A few seconds later he left, taking the light with him.
I sat in silence for a while, listening to the night sounds.
I could hear a small set of footsteps making their way towards me and I called out,
"Who's there?"
Chuck came into view and I sighed.
"Sorry Chuck. I didn't see you."
He passed me down some food and I smiled.
"Thanks."
"Welcome. I was asked to tell you that Newt moved your stuff to the sleeping quarters but you'll be in the same area as him." He told me. I nodded.
He walked over to Thomas's cell. I could hear small snippets of their conversation but I didn't pay any attention to them.
I lay down on the cold, hard dirt and closed my eyes. I may as well get some sleep while I can.
"Good work, Ravyn. Come with me." Ava said. I was working on Alby's vitals.
I stood up and followed her out of the room. She led me down white hallways and corridors, without saying a word.
My vision flashed and I was with Thomas. We were walking down a metal path. On either side of us there were tubes of water.
They had people in them.
The people were thrashing and screaming in their tubes. They probably felt like they were drowning.
"Why are we doing this, Ravyn? It's not right." Thomas asked me.
"We're being forced to." I replied.
We stopped in front of a chemical filled tube with a boy inside it. He had long blonde hair and beautiful brown eyes. The sign on the tank read,
Subject A5
The Glue
The boy was thrashing. I turned around to Thomas and buried my face in his chest.
"Promise me, Thomas. Promise me you'll find a way back." I pleaded.
"I promise." He replied.
I was startled awake by Minho unlocking my cell and reaching a hand inside.
"Need a hand?" He asked.
I chuckled and accepted his offer. He pulled me out and helped me stand.
He handed me a Runner's pack and I slipped it over my head.
"Let's go." I said.
<**#**>
We ran for about an hour. Minho was taking us to section seven like he promised yesterday.
When we reached it, we were surprised to find out it was open.
"This isn't supposed to be open for another week." Minho said uneasily.
We walked inside the section and continued forward until we reached a large open area with metal things sticking up from in the ground.
"What is this place?" I asked in awe.
"We call it Blades." Minho answered.
We walked through row after row of the blades until we found a once white singlet, stained red from blood.
"It's Ben's, isn't it?" Thomas asked.
"Yeah." Minho said sadly.
"Wait what happened to Ben?" I interrupted.
"He was banished with that other kid because they were stung. A Griever must have pulled them down here." Minho explained. I sighed.
"You were sleeping or something. I don't know." Thomas answered my question before I even asked it.
We all stood up and I heard a sound like something was being turned on. Thomas must have heard it too because he looked at Minho's bag and violently turned him around.
"What? Hey!" Minho protested.
Thomas pulled out the cylinder and looked at it. It was making a clicking sound. I snatched it off him and peered at it.
I turned it in a circle and listened to it.
When I had it pointed a certain way, it clicked louder.
I walked forward a little and listened as it got more frequent and louder.
"I think it's showing us the way." I said.
We followed it for the next half an hour. Stopping a lot and changing direction when we got it wrong.
Eventually it led us to a large room. There was a walkway in the middle and either side of it, the floor was gone.
"Minho, you ever been here before?" I asked. He shook his head.
"No."
The beeping thing got so fast it almost sounded like a continuous line. At the end of the walkway, there was just a stone wall.
"It's just another dead end." Minho groaned.
The cylinder beeped loudly and flashed green. I jumped when the so-called wall started moving. There were three sets of walls and a circular tunnel at the end.
We walked forward and peered into the tunnel.
A red light scanned us and I jumped back.
"What the hell was that?" I asked.
"We've got to get out of here. Come on!" Thomas yelled.
We ran out of the room and onto the pathway. The doors closed behind us and we rushed to get out.
The Blades were moving, which shouldn't surprise me. Everything moved in this damn Maze.
They were cutting us off.
We ran as fast as we could. Trying to get through the lines of closing metal rows as fast as we could. Minho got through the next one but Thomas and I had to stop otherwise it would have cut us in half.
We ran along the closing row until we found one we could get passed.
We only just made it through. After we got out of Blades there was yet another set of obstacles. The cement ground was being ripped open from beneath our feet.
Slabs of the ground rose up and out of the way for a huge, rusted metal beam to fall in their wake. Thomas grabbed my hand and forced me to run with him. There were slabs cracking and rising beneath our feet and I struggled I keep up.
When we got to the entry to the Blades, the floor was rising to the ceiling and Minho wasted no time in jumping up and crawling his way to the other side, we followed quickly.
We only just made it in time. The floor sealed up the entry to section seven. We laughed tiredly and lay on the Maze floor, catching our breath.
