Valentine's Snow Day (Dick and the Redheads)
-Sorry My Valentine's day part is a week late! BTW, White Spot is a semi-formal Canadian restaurant, think A&W but fancy.-
-Also, this should go without saying, Dick and Barbara ARE NOT siblings here-
Ages:
Babs - 16
Wally - 16
Dick - 15
Dick heard the doorbell ring and started dressing double time. He slicked his hair and pulled on some socks and jeans. He wanted Wally making as little contact with the family as possible.
"How's school been?"
"I'm here! sorry!" Dick interrupted his pseudo dad. "Sorry, I gotta get my shoes on. Hi Wally."
"Hi." The redhead was in the doorway, he was also wearing jeans, so they could both regret it later, and a winter coat with a faux-fur-rimmed hood. "School's fine, by the way. It's a long weekend, so..." He pumped his first awkwardly.
Dick pulled on his fleece and the coolest looking winter coat he had (Bar in on the floor). He started stomping on his boots. "Dick, gloves?" His father asked.
"Uh, sure."
"Scarf? Hat."
"I'm good." Dick said, trying to nip this in the bud before Bruce convinced himself that Dick needed an Inuit parka. He would be warm enough, he knew it.
"Take the hat, your jacket's hood isn't lined."
He did, to appease his dad, and skipped over to Wally in the doorway. It really was a little blizzard outside. If you told Dick this was Mr. Freeze's doing, he'd probably believe you.
"Is Barbara coming?"
"Yeah, she just called, she'd on her way, but the busses are shut down."
"Okay, you got the sleds?"
"Yeah, of course, C'mon." Dick started out the door.
"Are you sure you'll by warm enough in jeans?" Bruce asked. Dick assured him he was fine. "Is your phone charged? House keys?"
"Yes and Yes. I have My phone, keys, hand sanitizer, allowance money, a loose hair tie and a portal to the eighth dimension, can we go?" Dick asked eagerly.
Bruce relented. "Alright, have fun today. Call me if you need anything."
"Will do!" Dick took the redhead's hand, leading him around the side of the manor, through the deep snow. "I put them in here last night." He flipped out his keys and found a small one, unlocking the shed.
"You get shed keys?"
"Alfred offers keys to locked off areas if one of us does something for him." Dick explained. "Me and Jay did chores and tied for this one, but Alfred thought I'd be more responsible with it." Dick crawled into the dark shed, and soon reemerged with one newer-looking sled (Probably 90s-2000s), and a huge toboggan that was at lest forty-to-fifty-years-old and built to survive a nucellar attack.
"WHOA, that one's awesome!" Wally pulled it out. "What is this, 1933?"
"I dunno, the family already had it when Bruce was born." Dick shrugged, shutting the shed door.
They headed towards the front gates of the manor to wait for Barbara. There, they set down their sleds, and started throwing snowballs at the fence. This quickly escalated to throwing snowballs at each other.
"Apparently Jason is too old for playing in the snow now." Dick complained. "Like, 'oh, I'm seventeen. I'm too old for fun'."
"Lame." Wally got nailed in the back with a snowball whilst trying to dodge it, and ducked to fire one back.
"I know right! He seems to think that 'having fun is for kids' and 'I'm graduating this year'! As if he isn't childish already." Dick caught Wally's snowball and chucked it back, watching it fall apart mid-air.
"HEY!" The fence rattled. They turned to see Barbara, face pressed between the cold iron bars. "Happy Valantine's day."
"Happy Valentine's-" Wally stumbled and spluttered, shaking snow off his cheek.
Barbara grinned. Perfect shot. "I've got a sled. Let's head to Kingsgate park, it's got a wicked hill."
"Yeah!" Dick grabbed a sled and swung open the gate, joining her.
"Whoa, wicked toboggan."
"I know, right? We've had it to ages." He shielded himself from the clump of snow hurtling at him.
"Come on, Wally, let's git'!" the other redhead called.
"Coming!"
Soon all three were dragging their sleds down the half-iced road, wincing as it dragged on exposed pavement. "Who's the genius who brought snow pants?" Dick asked.
Barbara rolled her eyes. "Dad said I should. Practically dug up all the winter wear we own when he found out I was going out!"
"Bruce too! He saw me getting ready and was like 'Gloves? Hat? Space heater? '." He joked. The two quickly moved on in conversation, knowing this wasn't a very relatable topic to their third party. "I bet they'll be a TON of kids up at Kingsgate."
"Oh totally!"
"We'll be the only teens there!" Wally laughed.
"Children! Prepare to be intimidated!" Barbara jested, putting on a villainous voice to make the other's laugh.
They were correct. There were a lot of children. They felt a little out of place, and had a few good laughs about it.
Wally tugged his sled to the ledge. "Let's race first!"
"Wait, are we gonna go here and risk hitting the fence, or are we gonna- hit children?" Dick asked
"We're going to hit children regardless." Barbara pointed out, laughing at them. "Come on! Let's race."
They lined up their sleds. "Go?" Wally asked.
"There's a child!"
"They'll move." Barbara kicked off and the boys scrambled t follow her.
The hill had already been worn flat with sledding and they raced down the slides in the snow at a speed that probably didn't justify their excited reactions. At least it felt fast.
They slammed into each other at the bottom.
"Who won?"
"I don't know! My eyes were closed!" Barbara admitted.
"Did you see my spinning? I swear I was spinning!" Wally exclaimed.
Dick started racing back up the hill, dodging children. "Let's race again! Just me and Wally!"
"I'll film!"
They went several more times: Dick v. Wally, Dick v Barbara, Wally v Barbara. Who ever wasn't racing took photos and videos of their partners, cheering them on as they slipped down the hill.
"Let's all go together!"
"Racing?"
"No!" Dick grabbed his massive toboggan. "On the same sled!"
"YES!" Barbara exclaimed. "Wait, who goes where?"
Wally sat on the edge of the sled. "I'm tall, I'll go in the back."
"Should I- I don't mind, honestly." Dick admitted.
"Neither do I."
"Okay, Dick go in the front, Babs in the middle!" Wally said. "Like a... girl sandwhich."
Barbara paused, slipping into place. "girl sandwhich?"
"I dunno." Wally laughed, blushing, though it was hard to tell since the cold already had him bright red.
"I'm scared." Dick pulled his feet in. "We're going to hit someone!"
"It's fine!" Wally dug his feet into the snow. "Three, two One!"
The three squealed as they pushed off, together they were about 350 lbs, so they moved FAST. Dick stuck out his legs, cushioning the landing as they hit the fence.
All three of them lay there in a heap. During theirs trip down, Dick had leaned very far back into Barbara's lap and Wally had wrapped them both in his lanky limbs, getting snow up his jean legs in the process.
They were all soaking wet, cold and laughing.
"We should get our sleds." Barbara said.
"Yeah, lets get some lunch."
The three leapt up, scrambling up the hill and grabbing both Barbara's bag, and the other two sleds.
"Let's go down together on our way to the road."
"Like, racing?" Awally asked
"Just... together."
"Wait- let's hold hands!" Dick said. "Let's go down holding hands."
"Terrible idea, let's do it." Barbara grinned, lining up their sleds.
Dick held one of her hands, Wally the other, and they started kicking off. Wally shot ahead, yanking Barbara sideways, and making Dick's slide hit her.
They kept sliding, shouting, and falling over each other, even getting bumped by other sliding children, until they all collided at the bottom. Dick and Wally, who's jeans were bother thoroughly soaked through by now, shot up, hurrying to the road with Barbara on their heels.
They tried a café, but it was closed, so after a long-ish walk, they stopped for a late (3:15 pm) lunch at white spot.
Ditching their sleds around back, and kicking the snow off their boots, they requested a table for three. They got a corner booth and started shedding their soaking gloves and hats. Boy were they hungry.
Barbara and Dick talked politics the whole time they awaited their food, which Wally found boring.
Then their food arrived (Fettuccini Alfaro for Barbara, Poutine for Dick, and a club sandwich for Wally), he brought up the topic of Family history, so they discussed that for a while.
Dick, after calling Bruce to assure him he was alive, ordered everyone dessert.
"Open." Barbara ordered. Reluctantly, Wally opened his mouth. She gave him a forkful of Salted Caramel brownie. "Good, right?"
Wally nodded. "That is actually really good... Dickie."
Dick opened his mouth and took a taste of Wally's Cherry pie. "Damn good. Babs?" He gave her some raspberry cheesecake. Then they reversed, Babs fed Dick, Dick fed Wally, Wally fed Babs.
That's a strong trio. They have to be if they're sharing forks.
"Ooh. Sexy." Wally observed as the lights lowered, and music started up over the PA.
"It's getting late. We outta go." Barbara sighed. "They're putting on their dinner mood."
"I'll pay." Dick said, which was only met with objections.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"This is where I separate to go home." Barbara told the boys. "Mwah! See you at school." She kissed the tip of the smaller boy's frozen nose. "Wally-" She crushed him in a hug. "See you soon. We'll make plans to hang out?"
"Duh!" He hugged her back. "Bye Babs! Thanks for letting me use your gloves!"
"Bye!" Dick shouted. Barbara just turned and blew them a kiss, turning at the end of the block.
Wally hooked his arm under Dick's. "Lets get you back to your place."
"You don't have to." Dick admitted. "You're soaked through."
Wally kissed his partner's nose as well, he could smell Barbara's watermelon Chapstick on it. "C'mon. We're back almost at the manor"
-Sorry so much of this has been friend-focussed and not family/sibling focussed lately, I haven't seen my brother in like 6 months because of Covid, and have a weird Dynamic with my other close relatives, so it's been tough to write-
