Coming out to Wally
-Requested by the wonderful WallyandDick !!!-
-Me when I started on Wattpad: this is embarrassing, I'll sneak on here occasionally for guilty pleasure reading.
Me now: I drown my problems and identity crisis in writing shitty fanfic. I spend more time on here then I spend sleeping.-
"Hey! Robin!"
"Hey Wally." Dick swallowed hard. At least Robin wouldn't have to come out as trans too, the way the Robin mythos worked, people had to believe there had only ever been one robin. Now, this obviously didn't fool anyone, because Jason could dye his hair, but how did they explain Robin constantly changing ethnicities? Either way, Bruce had designed Dick' suit in the beginning to make him look like a young boy, so that was something.
"Sit." Wally settled at the edge of the building's roof, looking out over the city.
"I'm good, actually-"
"C'mon! It'll be romantic!"
Dick walked over uncomfortably. Wally had a huge crush on Robin, female Robin (Because all the heroes knew the newest Robin was a girl. How was Dick supposed to tell him that he wasn't a girl?
Even then, Wally might think he had found a fellow girl-thirsty guy friend. Would he want a gay Trans guy as his friend? He'd stop wanting Robin to date him if Robin was a gay dude, instead of a straight girl...
"So, uh, what's up with you."
"Not much, not much." Wally lied. "What about you, babe?"
"No." Dick replied impulsively. He shrunk back a little, not knowing what to say.
"Well, I was thinking that we could go to this café down the road while Flash and Bats are working. It has cheesecake, and it's SO good..." The redhead told him, not noticing that Robin had gone quiet. "We could talk, maybe you could... tell my your name? Number? email?"
"I can't, remember? I'm not allowed to." Dick muttered.
"C'MON? Not even your number? You can make an anonymous email?"
Dick shook his head. "We can get cheesecake though."
"Fine. Okay." Wally relented. "Not even your first name?"
"No." Dick replied.
The redhead groaned. "COME ON! you're such a tease."
Dick bit his lips. What do you say to that? "How's physics? Last time we talked, you got passed into the district science fair."
"Oh yeah! I got into semifinals!"
"DUDE! Congratulations!" Dick grinned, flicking his shoulder playfully.
"Yeah!" Wally beamed proudly. "How are the others?"
"Fine. Hood had a falling out with some friends though he's... it a bad mood."
"Aw, that sucks." Wally observed. "So, uh, if we aren't needed, let's get some cheesecake."
Dick nodded a little, emptily. "Let's go."
"Gimme a lift down?" Wally asked.
Dick nodded and attached his grappling hook to belay down the building. "Grab on." Wally wrapped his arms around him, hands uncomfortably close to his breasts and curves. Dick was uncomfortable. He kicked down the wall in silence, until Wally let do of him at the bottom.
"Whoo, you're a girl of many talents, rob."
"I'm not a girl." He said stiffly, befor he could stop himself.
"Whah?" Wally double-taked, thinking he may have heard Robin wrong.
Dick swallowed hard. Time to destroy his friendship. "I'm a guy." Wally stared at him in confusion. "I'm Trans."
"Oh."
"Yeah."
Wally frowned, looking away for a second as he thought. "Why?"
"I dunno, I just am."
"Does Batman know you're Trans?" The redhead asked.
"Yes." He replied.
"So you're he/him?"
"Yes?"
"And you're still Robin?"
"Yes."
"Chill, let's get cheesecake! To celebrate!" Wally grabbed his hand, pulling him down the road.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wally chomped into his strawberry cheesecake. Dick bit into his cherry cake apprehensively. Wally wasn't talking a lot, what if Wally just ghosted him after this? He might not think he's transphobic, but it's probably internalized. Dick had internalized homophobia and transphobia himself.
"You got a little..." Wally slicked the sauce off Dick's chin. "There! Gorgeous."
"Thanks." Dick felt concern spike. why was Wally still flirting with him? He didn't think Dick was a real guy. He still though of him as a girl, and that's why he was still flirting with him.
"So, do you like girls?" Wally asked, apropos of LITERALLY nothing.
"I guess." Dick replied. OH GOD. WALLY WAS FETISHIZING HIM AS A LESBIAN. "I-" He cleared his throat against the high pitch. "I think I might like boys."
Wally turned a little pink. "Oh, uh-"
"I don't have a crush on you!" Dick said quickly. "I think I might be Bi? My brother's bi."
"Oh cool, bi." Wally's voice squeaked a little.
"Yeah."
There was an uncomfortable silence. both of them began eating their cheesecake slices uncomfortably.
"Can I tell Flash?"
"Okay."
Another awkward pause.
"Can I give you a hug?"
"...Okay?"
Wally leaned around the table and enveloped Dick in a hug, incasing him in the smell of strawberry cheesecake and dollar-aisle coconut conditioner.
Dick felt his heart skip a little. Was he just a straight girl? Was he a completely gay guy? Was he a trans guy who had the internalized heteronormalization that made him think he liked boys?
Doesn't matter, He liked Wally.
But Wally was straight, right? If Wally liked him, it was because he thought Dick was still a girl.
Wally pulled away. "Hurry, babe, eat your cheesecake. I want to take you to the arcade."
Dick stopped him. "I'm a guy."
Wally stared at him blankly. "And?"
"Why are you calling me Babe? I'm a boy?"
"What? Can't I show affection?"
"You do think I'm a boy, right?" Dick asked, choking up a little.
"Of course! But is it gay to kiss the homies goodnight?" Wally asked. "I wasn't trying to hit on you for being a girl, I just thought it was a cute nickname."
"Can you call me a more masculine nickname?"
"You mean like Darling or Sweetie?"
Dick couldn't tell if wally was fucking with him. "Just like, Dude?"
Wally sighed, disappointed. "Boring, but if you want, sure."
"Maybe when we're a little closer you can move more affectionate." Dick wanted to slap himself. that was so dumb!
Wally smiled a little. "FINE. So can I get your number so we can start moving on to Sweetie?"
"Wally no!" He laughed "We're not allowed!"
"Oh c'mon! live dangerously."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Bye Wally!"
"See you soon!" Wally headed back with Flash.
Bruce walked his new son to the zetatube. "Did you tell him?"
"Yeah." He muttered.
"How did it go?"
Dick thought for a minute. "He's either transphobic or very gay."
"What makes you say that?"
Dick turned a little pink. "When I came out, he started flirting more."
Bruce wasn't sure he felt about a boy flirting with Dick. "Maybe the way he talks?"
"Maybe." Dick agreed. They returned to the batcave, and he headed up to bed. Wally had already texted him.
'hey'
'Hey'
'Is this Robin?'
'You looked good today lol'
As soon as he read the last message, it was deleted, as if it wasn't meant to be sent in the first place.
