prologue
Beacon Hills was deceptively quiet that evening, the kind of calm that rarely lasted long in a town teeming with secrets. Ana Stilinski-Hale, however, thrived in these moments. The crisp autumn air was sharp against her skin as she crouched on the edge of the woods, her honey-gold eyes locked on the glowing trail of a firefly.
Her muscles coiled like springs, ready to pounce, and then— snap! Her foot came down on a twig, startling the firefly into flight. Ana sighed, rubbing the back of her neck.
“Stealth level: zero,” she muttered.
“Maybe next time, don’t breathe so loud,” came a voice behind her.
Ana jumped, whirling around to face her dad, Stiles Stilinski, standing there with his hands stuffed into his hoodie pocket and a smug grin plastered across his face.
“Seriously, Dad?” Ana groaned, her heart pounding. “You couldn’t not sneak up on me?”
“Not my fault you’re distracted by bugs,” Stiles teased, stepping closer. “Weren’t you supposed to be practicing your whole ‘silent predator’ thing?”
“I was,” she replied, brushing dirt off her jeans. “But someone clearly can’t let me have five minutes to myself.”
“Well, someone needs to remind you that your other dad is going to be pissed if he finds out you’re running around the woods again.”
Ana rolled her eyes. “Derek gets it. He’s the one who told me I needed to train more, remember?”
Stiles shook his head, muttering under his breath. “Yeah, because Hales are all about sensible parenting.”
Before Ana could respond, a low growl rumbled from the shadows. She straightened instinctively, her wolf senses tingling as Derek Hale emerged from the trees.
“Stiles,” Derek said, his voice even, “what are you doing out here?”
“Me? I’m supervising!” Stiles defended, throwing up his hands.
Derek’s eyes shifted to Ana, his expression softening slightly. “You’ve been out here long enough. Come back inside. It’s not safe to wander alone.”
Ana hesitated, her instincts still buzzing. “I can handle myself. It’s just the woods, Dad.”
Derek’s stern expression didn’t falter, but before he could respond, a ripple of energy crackled through the air. All three of them turned as a golden light appeared just a few feet away. It shimmered and expanded, forming into a doorway.
“What the—” Stiles started, instinctively moving in front of Ana.
The light solidified into a figure: a petite woman in a sparkling blue gown, holding a wand that glimmered like starlight. Her kind eyes twinkled as she took a step forward, surveying the trio with a curious tilt of her head.
“Good evening,” she said, her voice melodic and calm. “I’m Fairy Godmother.”
Ana blinked, exchanging a confused look with her dads. “Fairy… Godmother?”
“As in the Fairy Godmother?” Stiles added, his voice tinged with disbelief.
The woman smiled serenely. “Yes, I’ve heard that reaction a few times. I assume you’re Ana Stilinski-Hale?”
Ana stepped forward cautiously. “That’s me. What do you want?”
Fairy Godmother’s smile widened. “I’ve come to offer you an opportunity—a chance to attend Auradon Prep.”
“Auradon what now?” Stiles cut in, his protective instincts kicking in full force.
Fairy Godmother turned to him, unfazed. “Auradon Prep. It’s the top academy in the United Realms, dedicated to fostering unity and understanding between all magical and non-magical beings. Recently, we’ve started extending invitations to those from… unique backgrounds. Ana’s heritage makes her an excellent candidate.”
Derek crossed his arms. “Heritage?”
Fairy Godmother nodded, turning her attention to Ana. “You’re human, but also supernatural—a wolf. That duality gives you a perspective few others have. Auradon needs people like you to help bridge the gap between worlds.”
Ana tilted her head, her curiosity piqued despite herself. “Why me, though? I’m just… me.”
Fairy Godmother’s gaze softened. “You’re more than that, Ana. You’re intelligent, resourceful, and brave. And like the children of Auradon, you understand what it means to live in the shadow of legacies not entirely your own.”
Stiles frowned. “Yeah, okay, but why does she have to go there? Across realms, with a bunch of royal kids she doesn’t even know?”
“Because we’re building something new,” Fairy Godmother explained. “An experimental program to bring in students who can help Auradon grow. Ana can bring something valuable to the table—her instincts, her problem-solving, and her understanding of worlds both magical and mundane.”
Derek’s expression remained unreadable, but Ana could see the hesitation in his eyes. “And what’s the catch?”
“No catch,” Fairy Godmother replied simply. “But it is a challenge. It won’t be easy to leave everything behind, even for a short time. But the rewards could be immeasurable.”
Ana’s mind raced. She wasn’t sure what to think. The idea of leaving Beacon Hills felt… strange. This was her home, her pack. But at the same time, something deep inside her stirred—a longing for something more.
“How long would I be gone?” she asked quietly.
“Just one school year to start,” Fairy Godmother said. “You’d be able to visit during breaks.”
Ana looked at her dads. Stiles seemed torn, his protective side battling with his understanding of Ana’s adventurous spirit. Derek, as always, was harder to read, but she could tell he was weighing the risks and benefits in his mind.
“Can we have a moment?” Derek asked.
Fairy Godmother inclined her head. “Of course. I’ll wait.”
As she stepped back, the Stilinski-Hale family huddled together.
“I don’t like it,” Stiles said immediately. “It sounds dangerous, and she’s already got enough on her plate.”
Derek met Ana’s gaze, his voice steady. “What do you want?”
Ana hesitated. “I… I don’t know. It sounds crazy, but maybe it’s what I need. To figure out who I am, away from all this.”
Stiles groaned. “I hate when you sound like me.”
Derek placed a hand on Ana’s shoulder. “If this is what you want, we’ll support you. But promise us you’ll stay safe.”
Ana nodded, determination settling in her chest. “I promise.”
Fairy Godmother rejoined them, her smile returning. “So, what do you say?”
“I’ll do it,” Ana said, her voice firm.
Fairy Godmother clapped her hands. “Wonderful! Pack your things, Ana. Your journey begins tomorrow.”
As the golden light shimmered again, Ana couldn’t help but feel a spark of excitement—and apprehension—for the adventure ahead.
