Chapter 15

Mimmi and Cleo woke up at the same time the next morning. When they looked around everyone there was still asleep. Ondina was halfway out of her sleeping bag, Lyla was upside down in hers, hugging onto Nixie's leg, and Nixie was on top of her sleeping bag on her stomach, one of her arms underneath the pillow. The mermaids weren't quite used to sleeping above water yet. Everyone else was curled up into their sleeping bag, sleeping peacefully.

"Good morning," Cleo said, rubbing her eyes.

"If you want to call it that," Mimmi said, brushing her hair out of hey eyes.

"Didn't you sleep well?" Cleo asked.

"It took me ages to get to sleep, because it was so uncomfortable, and then I had a nightmare, and a bunch of visions were mixed together. Something about Erik, and the trident stone, and some red haired girl."

Mimmi and Cleo slipped out of their sleeping bags and walked over to the counter, where they saw Sirena. Sirena's hair looked like a massive birds nest on top of her head, and her eyes were red.

"You're up early," Cleo commented.

Sirena blinked and looked up.

"... You didn't go to sleep, did you?" Mimmi asked.

Sirena shook her head. "I have been scarred for life," she whispered.

"Why? What happened?" Cleo asked.

"That horror film." Sirena shook her head again and looked down.

"What happened?" Mimmi asked. She and Cleo had both fallen asleep halfway through the comedy film.

"Trust me," Sirena looked up. "You don't want to know."

Two hours later, everyone was wide awake, and dressed. Cleo had to go to work, and Lewis and Lyla decided to go with her.

Everyone took the cardboard down from the windows and moved the tables back into the original places.

"It was a full moon last night, and nothing happened..." Emma said.

"I wouldn't say nothing happened," Nixie said.

Everyone turned around to face her. Nixie held up her hand. The silver moon ring was there, but the moon stone wasn't...

"Are you flipping kidding me!?" Ondina yelled.

"One of us really should have stayed awake and kept guard," Bella sighed.

"I was awake pretty much all night, and no one came in or out," Sirena told them.

"So where did it go?" Evie asked.

Everyone began to search. They checked on the floor, around the counter, by the drum kit, but it was nowhere to be seen.

"Erik," Nixie growled.

"Now we only have one moon ring, and we haven't even tried to defeat Erik yet," Sirena sighed.

"Then maybe we should do something about it," Mimmi said. "I'll go look at Rita's potions."

Mimmi left the café with Zac and Evie.

Rikki sighed. "I need to give Erik a piece of my mind!!"

"All in good time," Nixie said. "But when we do fight him... I want to be the one to punch him first."

"Isn't there a way we could reason with him?" Emma asked.

"Reasoning won't work with Erik. When he has his heart set on something, he won't stop until he gets it," Ondina shook her head.

"That reminds me of someone I know," Mimmi said to Ondina as she came back into the café with Zac. Mimmi was carrying a small vile of dark green liquid.

"Where's Evie?" Sirena asked.

"She's outside, Carly called her," Zac smiled, like he knew something the others didn't.

"Zac..." Nixie began, but she was cut off by Zac's phone bleeping.

Zac grinned and pilled his phone out. "Hello?" He asked, but he smiled like he already knew who it was. His smile spread even wider and he held out the phone to Sirena. "It's for you."

Sirena have Zac a confused look as she took the phone and held it to her ear. "Hello?" She asked. Her look of confusion grew into a massive smile when she heard the voice of the reply. "David!!" She said happily, walking out of the café with the phone in her hand.

"Who's David?" Bella asked.

"Her boyfriend," Mimmi answered.

"Aww, that's sweet," Emma smiled.

Bella saw Lewis re-enter the café with Nate, so she left the group to go to practice with the band, taking Ondina with her, and Emma left to go take the orders of some customers who had come in and sat down, and Zac offered to help her.

Only Rikki, Mimmi and Nixie were left in the corner of the café.

"What's in the vile?" Rikki asked Mimmi, only just noticing it.

Mimmi held it up. "This is a potion I made, with a couple of Rita's potions combined together. There's a potion which shortly drains the memory of the drinker, there is a potion that will give you the most awful headache ever, and there is a sleeping potion, which makes the drinker feel incredibly tired."

"Impressive," Rikki commented.

"Yeah, next time Erik comes into the café...if he comes into the café...we need to slip it into his drink. It will slow him down and make him weak, and then we can get to work finding the new trident stone he has made."

"Speak of the devil," Nixie said, nodding to the door.

Mimmi and Rikki looked, and Erik, had indeed, walked through the entrance. He sat down at a small round table and grabbed the menu.

"But why would he come in and sit down to casually?" Mimmi asked no one in particular.

"I don't care, but he needs payback for stealing my moon stone," Nixie said through gritted teeth.

"I'll do it," Rikki said, snatching the vile out of Mimmi's hand. Rikki stuffed some different fruits into the blender and then poured the contents into two cups. She put a pink straw in one drink and blue in another. She popped the cork off the vile and added the potion to the cup with the blue straw. Then she carried the two cups to where Erik was sitting.

"That was a very good idea," Nixie nodded at Mimmi.

Mimmi smiled, exceptionally pleased with herself. "Thank you."

They watched Rikki walk over to Erik's table.

"How long did you say the potion would affect Erik?" Nixie asked.

Mimmi's smile slowly faded. "I didn't..."

"I didn't order anything yet," Erik said to Rikki when he saw the juices.

Rikki shrugged. "It's on the house," she told him, putting the cup with the blue straw in front of Erik, and kept the one with the pink straw in her hand as she sat down. "I think we need to have a small talk, you and I."

Erik shrugged, and fiddled with the blue straw, but he didn't drink it yet. "Okay, talk about what?"

"The Merman Chamber on Mako Island," Rikki said without hesitation.

Erik's lips curled into a smile. "Really? Why would you be interested in such a powerful, dangerous object? You're not even a real mermaid, you're an amateur!"

"Maybe I am, but I'm not going to let you hurt my friends and get away with it," Rikki responded.

"You have an attitude, you might want to think carefully about what you say," Erik suggested.

"The only thing I'm thinking about is stopping you from hurting my friends," Rikki told him.

"Haha!" Erik gave a laugh. Rikki gave a small sigh. He still hadn't touched his juice.

She turned around in her chair to look at Mimmi and Nixie, but they were having their own conversation.

She turned back around.

"Are they your friends?" Erik nodded at Mimmi and Nixie.

"What if they are?" Rikki replied with a question.

"They're unusual girls. One turns everything into a joke, and the other one is smart. Sometimes, a little too smart." He grabbed the cup in front of him and took a small sip of the juice through the straw. "Whatever you say to me, I'm not going to rethink about activating the Chamber."

Rikki sighed, but gave a small smile, because he had drunk his juice. The potion should be kicking in at any minute.

Rikki took the other cup and drunk through the straw as she went back to Mimmi and Nixie.

"Has he drunk it?" Mimmi asked, looking past Rikki.

Rikki nodded and drunk some more of her juice. "How long will it take for our to kick in?"

"About a minute or so," Mimmi said. "I'll make sure Zac knows to-Rikki no!!!" Mimmi suddenly grabbed the cup out of Rikki's hands.

"What?" Rikki asked. Mimmi's sudden shouting had made her head feel dizzy, and she grabbed hold of the counter to give her support.

"Are you okay?" Nixie asked Rikki.

"She's not," Mimmi replied, for Rikki.

"Why - oh..." Nixie said when Mimmi held up the cup, and Nixie saw.

It was the cup with the blue straw.

"Erik switched the drinks! We should have been watching them," Mimmi cried.

Nixie and Mimmi looked at Erik. Erik stood up, grinned, held up his cup and toasted then, before drinking through the pink straw and leaving the café.

Rikki gave a small groan and fell to her knees.

"Rikki? Rikki can you hear me?" Mimmi asked, getting down into her knees too.

Rikki felt like someone had picked up the room and was spinning it violently. She couldn't see straight, and her eyes were dropping, and for a few moments she forgot her name.

"What - what time is it?" She asked.

Mimmi and Nixie gave each other worried looks. "Ten thirty, why?" Nixie asked.

"I have to go get ready," Rikki told them. "It's a full moon tonight."

"Rikki, the full moon was last night," Nixie said, lightly shaking her friend.

But Rikki made no sign of hearing Nixie. "I have to get ready with Cleo Emma and...what's the other girl called?"

"Oh dear," Mimmi sighed. She couldn't believe that her potion affected the wrong person. If only it had affected Erik, it would be perfect!!

"Rikki, listen to me, we're going to get you home, and we're going to find a way to get you better," Nixie said. "You need to help me get you onto your feet."

Nixie any Mimmi each put one of Rikki's arms around their necks, and together they managed to get Rikki onto her feet. Together they supported her weight, and managed to get Rikki to the exit.

"What happened?" Zac asked them.

"Mimmi made a potion," Nixie said.

"It was in Erik's cup, but he switched them with none of us noticing," Mimmi said, almost in tears, half from pity of Rikki, and half from embarrassment for herself, that one of her potions had gone wrong.

"We'll take her to my mum's car," Zac told them. "Hopefully it will wear off in a couple of hours or so." Zac managed to pick Rikki up bridal style, and he carried her to the car.

"Is it nearly Christmas?" Rikki asked him, her head rolling on her shoulders.

"Not for several months," Zac replied, trying to ignore the funny looks he was getting from people passing by.

"Sirena has a boyfriend," Rikki told him thoughtfully.

Zac gave a small sigh. "Yeah, I know."

"And you have a girlfriend," Rikki added.

"As crazy as it sounds, I know!" Zac stopped at the edge of the road, looked both ways and then crossed.

"Do you think Ondina would like a pearl bracelet for Easter?" Rikki asked.

"Easter? Don't you mean Christmas?" Zac corrected her.

"No, Easter is on the twenty fifth of December, Christmas is some time in spring!" Rikki suddenly sat up, eyes wide. "I can't remember what I got for Christmas last year!!"

"That's a shame," Zac said, slightly sarcastic.

He managed to unlock the door of his car, and he gently placed Rikki in the passengers seat. "I'm going to lock the door but a window will be open, try get some sleep, and I'll come and check on you in a while, okay?"

Rikki nodded. "Does Emma have a little brother, called Elliot?" She asked.

"I don't know."

"Maybe it's a sister?"

"Who don't you sleep on it?" Zac suggested, winding down one of the windows a tiny bit, before closing the door, locking the car and walking back to the café.
