An Argument That Ends In Disaster

Meanwhile after school, Jake was heading home with Makayla after managing to survive the rest of the day. He was in a better mood than before, but he was still alert.

"Are you okay, bro?" Makayla asked. "You look distracted."

"I'm fine." Jake said. "I just. . . I don't want to run in to Natalie or Ryan again."

"What even happened today?" Makayla asked.

"I don't want to talk about it." Jake said. "It's too much to handle."

"Okay. . . I won't pry." Makayla said.

"Ah, there you are." A familiar voice said. "Glad I caught you before you made it home."

"Oh, hey Doux." Makayla said with a smile. "Wanna walk home with us?"

"Actually, I came to just talk to Jake." Douxie said. "Do you mind. . . giving us some time?"

"Oh, uh. . . sure." Makayla said. "I'll let Megamind know that you're both behind."

"Okay. See you at home, Light-Bulb." Douxie said.

With that said, Makayla left the two of them by themselves as they stayed silent for a bit.

"So. . ." Jake said, bring the silence. "What do you want to talk to me about now?"

"Well. . . I just wanted to apologize." Douxie said.

"Apologize?" Jake asked in confusion. "For what?"

"For being a jerk." Douxie said. "I guess I was acting a little bit foolish before."

"Yeah, you were." Jake said, bluntly.

"Can. . . you forgive me?" Douxie asked.

"Well. . . I guess so." Jake said. "But why did Makayla have to go for that?"

"Because I have other things to say." Douxie said. "I may have apologized, but. . . I still want to get one thing straight."

"Oh yeah?" Jake asked. "And what's that?"

"What are you?" Douxie asked.

"Come again?" Jake said.

"Cause you're not human." Douxie said. "I've been sensing some strange energy from you for a while now. And I need answers."

"Well. . . I don't know." Jake said. "But one thing is for sure. . . I think I might have some strange powers."

"Non-human powers." Douxie added.

"Right. . . yeah." Jake said. "But I'm not too sure if I understand it yet."

"But I can help you with that." Douxie said. "I can go you understand your situation."

"Really?" Jake asked. "You'll do that?"

"Of course." Douxie said. "You should be able to better understand yourself, so you don't, uh. . . hurt yourself. . . or others. . ."

"Well. . . I don't know." Jake said. "How can I trust that you're well-meaning? I mean. . . you hate me."

"I don't hate you." Douxie said.

"Well thanks, but. . . I think this is something that I should figure out on my own." Jake said. "For some reason. . . I feel responsible for my own past. And I'm gonna find the truth without any help."

"But. . . I don't get it." Douxie said.

"What do you mean?" Jake asked.

At that moment, music began to play and Douxie began to sing:

Douxie: "I came all this way today
to give us a fresh start
And now you’re all like
"Wow!", you're all like
warming my heart"

Jake: "Well this is who I am,
welcome to the real me
You have no idea how great
it feels to be free"

Douxie: "We've been falling out
for way too long, so
let’s forget who’s right"

Jake: "And forget who’s wrong"

Both: "Okay!"

Jake: "Why don’t you stay,
You're family now so welcome in"

Both: "Cause life’s too short!"

Jake: "To always feel shut out
and hated by the Brother
I feel I should know"

Both: "Life’s too short!"

Douxie: "To never let you see
who I am, the true king
of magic and sorcery
Whoa, whoa, whoa!"

Both: "I never understood,
but now I do
Life’s too short to miss
out on a brother like you"

"So you admit it, then." Douxie said, with a hopeful smile.

Jake looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "Admit what?" He said with a tad of disappointment in his voice.

"That you're unfit to be Nora's brother." Douxie said seriously. "It’s clear by now, right?"

"Oh." Jake said, disappointed.

Douxie cleared his throat. "Sooo..."

"What?" Jake asked in hurt and confusion. "I don’t believe you!"

"Well, I just assumed that you'd have to..." Douxie started to say before Jake started singing once again.

Jake: "That I'd leave you alone,
that’s how your story ends!"

Douxie: "It does! It's just like it was,
except for we could be friends"

Jake: "So that’s been your plan?
To force me out of her life!"

Douxie: "Whoa, whoa!
Don’t get upset let’s get
back on the same page!"

Jake: "Gee, thanks for coming
up to see the place
And showing off your
mastery of tact and grace Okay!
Run back to town and
spill my secrets,
make a full report!
Bye-bye!"

Douxie: "Wait!"

Jake: "Cause life’s too short!"

Douxie: "There it is!
The anger you try
so damn hard to hide
You did well there, for a spell,
but now you’re back
in the same place
Kick me out if you want,
but I’m the only one who
Is not one hundred
percent convinced
You're so innocent!"

Jake: "You can think
whatever you want
'cause I don’t care
You’re a fool who
Sold his soul to despair!"

Douxie: "That is so unfair!"

Both: "I swear I’m through
with taking your unshaking
"brotherly" support!
HAH! Life’s too short!"

Jake: "To continue to
let you treat me like sh*t,
no matter how hard I try!"

Douxie: "La la lalala laaaa!"

Both: "Life’s too short!"

Douxie: "To listen to a reckless
fool who only ever sees the
things he wants to see!"

Jake: "You don’t know..."

Douxie: "You have no idea..."

Both: "What I've been through!
Because of you
Life’s too short to
waste another minute!
Life’s too short to
even have you in it!
Life’s too short!"

"I've been so wrong about you!" Douxie scoffed in disbelief. "You'll never be a brother to me!"

"You, you've been so wrong about everything!" Jake said seriously. "You think you know everything, but you don't!"

"I'm only doing what's best for MY sister!" Douxie snapped. "And I won't hesitate to protect my family from monsters like YOU!"

"I. am. not. a. MONSTER!!" Jake shouted, before a large shock of dark purple lightning shot out of his body.

The lightning shot straight towards Douxie and struck him right in the chest. Holding his chest and groaning in pain, Douxie collapsed to his knees.

Once he was calm, Jake suddenly gasped as he looked over to see Douxie on the ground, unconscious.

"Oh shit. . . No no no no no!" Jake said as he rushed towards Douxie side and kneeled down beside him. "Douxie? Douxie! Wake up! Oh man. . . what have I done?!"

Suddenly, Makayla came rushing back to her brothers to see what had happened.

"What in the name of Lucifer is going on?" Makayla asked. "Is everything okay, Jake?"

"Call an ambulance. . ." Jake said.

"Huh?" Makayla said, confused.

"Call a damn ambulance!" Jake yelled. "Douxie is hurt! And. . . it's all my fault."
