A Not-So-Perfect Duet

When Jake and Makayla got to school, Makayla immediately brought Douxie to the office to see if he could be a teachers assistant. Jake didn't think or say anything about it since there wasn't anything he could say anyway.

Soon enough, class had started and Jake headed straight to his music class. He was looking forward to it, since he had the same class with April. And he was excited to see her again.

When he got to class, he was immediately stopped by the teacher.

"You did so well last time in class, Jake." The teacher said. "I think you'll like today."

"Really?" Jake said, intrigued. "What's today?"

"Today. . . is duet day." The teacher said. "And thankfully, I've got a student who was willing to duet with you today."

"And. . . who's that?" Jake asked, thought he blushed, knowing who it could be.

"Our top student. . . Natalie Heartstrings." The teacher said.

"Huh?" Jake asked.

Suddenly, Natalie came to class, giving an evil smirk. "Good morning, Teacher." She said, as she gave a flirty look at Jake. "Good morning, Jake. . ."

"Uh. . . good morning." Jake said. "I didn't know you were in this class."

"It's cause you're too goo-goo for that red haired witch, April O'Niel!" Natalie said, without hesitation. "But I promise you. . . we will be a perfect couple. . . uh, I mean duet."

Jake sighed as he and Natalie went into class together. April, who was already there, instantly noticed them and got a worried look in her face.

"Jake, what's going on?" April asked.

"The teacher assigned me and Natalie to do a duet today." Jake said. "I'm not looking forward to this at all."

"Well. . . I wish you guys luck." April said.

"Thanks." Jake said with a small smile. "And I promise you that I'll make it up to you later."

"Oh, Jake! Why are you talking to the witch?" Natalie said. "You should come and sit by me!"

'This girl. . .' Jake thought to himself. "Fine. . . I'll see you later, April."

"Y-Yeah. . . see you later." April said a bit sadly.

Jake then walked over to Natalie and sat down, hesitantly, next to her.

"So, here are the lyrics for our duet." Natalie said, giving Jake a piece of paper. "Memorize them, so we don't look like fools, okay?"

"Uh. . . okay." Jake said.

Jake read through the lyrics and cringed at them. It was pretty much like a love song.

"Uh. . . is this a love song?" Jake asked.

"Well, in a way." Natalie said. "But I wrote this to be kind of like a. . . upbeat, hip-hop, type of thing. It's not. . . fully romantic."

"I don't know about this one. . ." Jake said. "I mean, I've already been through a heartbreak before and-"

"Does it look like I give a damn?" Natalie said. "Just do this for me."

"Whatever. . . It's not like I have a choice, do I?" Jake said.

"Yay!" Natalie said. "There's the Jake I've come to know so far."

'Man. . . why does it have to be me?' Jake thought to himself. 'I just wanted to get through this school year as normally and quickly as possible. And here I am, duetting a girl that I don't even like, let alone know as well.'

"So, you two ready for your duet today?" The teacher asked.

"Yep!" Natalie said with a cheerful smile. "C'mon, Jake! Let's do it!"

Natalie pulled Jake up to the front of the class nether teacher pushed a button on the small radio in the classroom as music began to play and they began to sing. But Jake didn't seem to be comfortable with it:

Jake: "It's hard to believe
That I couldn't see"

Both: "You were always there
beside me
Thought I was alone
With no one to hold
But you were always right beside me"

Natalie: "This feeling's like no other"

Both: "I want you to know
I've never had someone that
knows me like you do
the way you do
I've never had someone as
good for me as you
no one like you
so lonely before I finally found
what I've been looking for"

Natalie: "So good to be seen
So good to be heard"

Both: "Don't have to say a word"

Jake: "So long I was lost
So good to be found"

Both: "I'm loving having you around"

Jake: "This feeling's like no other"

Both: "I want you to know
I've never had someone that
knows me like you do
The way you do
I've never had someone as
good for me as you
No one like you
So lonely before, I finally found
what I've been looking for

Doo Doo Doo Doo
Doo Doo Doo Doo
Do Do
Woa-ah-ah-oh"

When the song was over, the whole class clapped for them, except for April. She felt kind of bad that Jake was pretty much forced into singing the duet with Natalie. But she knew she couldn't do anything about it, but to watch it all happen.

'Poor Jake. He didn't seem to enjoy that at all.' April thought to herself. 'I wish there was a way I could help.'

When it was all done, Jake and Natalie went back to their seats. Jake immediately blushed in embarrassment and hid his face with his hands.

"What are you so embarrassed about?" Natalie asked. "That's was amazing!"

'Then clearly, you didn't notice my lack of enjoyment.' Jake thought to himself.

Natalie then looked over at April and gave an evil smirk. April scowled back. It was clear that these two would become great enemies in the future. Especially when she teams up with another person from Jake's past to make his life all the worse. . .
