Goldie had been born under a bright moon that seemed to shine as bright as a falling angel descending from the Heavens. The afterbirth tradition was for the pod of Sirens to cheer joyfully each time a healthy guppy was born safely into the waters. As a guppy, she smiled brightly and giggled at each little finger that came by to gently scratch her chubby cheeks.
With every new life born, another had to be taken. Every art of creation was the first act of destruction, seeing how childbirth was a process that strained the mother to extreme extents. Childbirth was a very important way of Sirens. They were to be honored and respected, praying to the mother for good health and vitality.
Goldie's parents decided she would be their last guppy because it was absolutely tiresome having to raise guppies - especially Sirens - with powers. Cerdian had caused a mini tornado inside their home when he was a newborn, Airis was an avid thrower of items as a newborn, while Goldie was a screamer.
Even for her parents, Goldie's screams were loud and harmful. It would always take a lot to coax her into slumber, and for the ringing in their ears to stop.
She missed her parents. She knew thinking about them wouldn't bring them back, but simply not thinking about them felt barbaric and disrespectful, and being disrespectful was simply not accepted in her family. She was feeling emotions she had never felt before and she wasn't sure how to handle them. It was all so new to her.
"Hey, Goldie," Sharon called out, "why didn't you used to talk?"
She frowned, wiggling around on the couch to get more comfortable. "Scared of my voice."
"Who, me? Because I'm not," Sharon defended.
Goldie shook her head. "Me."
Sharon pursed her lips in thought. She clearly couldn't get into her head in order to find out, so she assumed it had to do with her powers.
"Tell me more about Sirens," said Sharon. "Do you have parties, where do you sleep, what other things do you eat?"
Goldie hummed. "Hug."
Sharon stopped what she was doing - rifling through an old magazine she found on the bookcase - and walked over to Goldie, sitting beside her and giving her a hug. Goldie sighed thankfully, snuggling closer to her.
"We have coming of age parties, we sleep in big caves, we eat shark and seaweed."
She answered each of the questions Sharon asked, but Sharon was hoping for some more information.
"What do you do at coming of age parties?"
"Celebrate, eat food, dance, swim. It's fun," she said.
"Do you miss it?" Sharon asked.
Goldie nodded. "I miss everything."
"I know. Tell me about your home."
"Pretty, bright lights. Paintings on walls, seashell door, fish swimming around. Bed of seaweed and clams."
"It sounds exotic," murmured Sharon.
"Ex-o-tic?" questioned Goldie.
"Means fancy, different, comfortable."
Goldie nodded. "Exotic."
Sharon had gotten Goldie to open up a little more. It was similar to getting a tough oyster to open up with a knife, but she would manage.
