Epiloge
Artemis was awoken by the excited cries of her children. She smiled, glad to hear they were having fun. She sat up in bed, and looked at Ranger, who was lying awake next to her.
"Twenty years today since we first got together" she told him.
"Been that long already?" He laughed and sat up too.
"Six years since we got married"
"It honestly feels longer"
"It dose"
"It feels like just last week we were in the park that time, we were so young"
"Remember when everyone found out?"
"Like that time on the bus!" They both laughed. This was one of Artemis' favorite memories, a school trip, not long after christmas, she and Ranger had been in the back of the bus, just the two of them. She had been tired, so had fallen asleep against his shoulder. She'd never forget waking up to the shocked faces of her classmates, as Ranger slowly confessed they were together. It was then that Athena, Ares and Troy burst into the room. Ares and Troy were identical twins, aged three. Both had Artemis' dull green eyes, with dirty blond hair in the exact style Ranger had had his when Artemis first met him. Ares had a mole under his left eye, about half way down his cheek. Troy was the same, except his was on the right. Athena was the spitting image of her mother, but aged five. From the tone of her hair to the facial expressions she made, she looked exactly like Artemis, but with Rangers magical eyes. The eyes had always been the pretties part of Ranger, and Artemis was so glad her daughter had inherited them. Artemis smiled at her family of five, well, five for now. Almost six. She looked down at her stomach, her fourth child due to arrive any day. Part of her hoped the youngest member of the family would be born on Christmas, since it was such a special day to her, but part of her wanted her daughter to be born on her own special day.
"Mummy! Daddy!" Troy cried, very excited. There was one more difference between Troy and Ares. Ares was selectively mute, while Troy was about the noisiest boy on the planet. Always had something to tell everyone about, and tell them loudly. Ares had told his parents that he didn't need to talk, because Troy talked enough for both of them, which was true in a sense.
"What is it sweetheart?" Artemis asked her son.
"Santas been!" all three of them cried. Artemis looked at Ranger and smiled, they could tell it was true excitement when Ares joined in the excited screaming.
"Did you already open your stockings?" Ranger asked.
"They tried to, but I stopped them!" Athena said proudly.
"Good work love" laughed Artemis, "now, do you want to open them?"
"Yes!" it was all three of them who yelled again. They jumped onto the bed beside their parents with such enthusiasm it hurt. Artemis groaned in pain, lots of things were painful these days.
"Careful with mummy now" Ranger told them.
"I'm fine" Artemis smiled at him, he'd always go out of his way to make sure she was ok. Like that time he'd taken a whole week off school to help her when her grandmother died, it had been the week before exams as well. The children tore through the gifts in their stockings, and it was more fulfilling than anything Artemis could possibly imagen to see the delight on their faces as they opened each gift. Ares and Troy's favorite things were matching toy cars for their toy race track they had gotten for their birthday this year. Aethena's favorite was a large stuffed dragon she named Smokey. After the stockings were over the children raced down the stairs to the tree.
"They never wait, do they?" laughed Ranger as he helped Artemis up, and down the stairs.
"No, but that's the joy of being that young" she laughed. When they got downstairs Coco and Olexa were waiting by the living room door. Artemis had taken on role as official carer for Olexa, as has always been her dream. She loved the girl, and didn't want to lose contact with the kid who'd called her her sister. Ranger opened the living room door and the children's faces lit up with magic again as they caught sight of the sparkeing tree, gifts piled high underneath it. Artemis and Ranger went to sit on the sofa while the children and Olexa set to work opening the gifts. Coco came to join them on the sofa, she was an old dog now and she couldn't be bothered to play.
"Children" Artemis asked.
"Yes mum?" Troy and Aethena chorused.
"What do you want to name your next sister? Me and daddy can't think of anything"
"Grumpy or WishYouWhereABoy" Troy stated. Ares nodded beside him.
"Diana, like the horse rider in my book" Aethena cried.
"Aunt Olexa, what do you think?" asked Artemis, while Ranger softly explained to Coco why she couldn't choose.
"Die Anna!" olexa declared. Artemis laughed, Diana it was. She looked at her family, her husband sitting beside her stroking her dog, her children opening presents and getting delighted by every little thing, and her 'sister', happily acting like she was no older than the children themselves. She loved them all with more than her heart, and always woud.
