Chapter 8: The Rest of the Semester

The next day, Professor Knight had the class stand and show what they were made of.

"Ready position. Common crouch. I want to see matted fur and yellow teeth. Basic snarl. Show me some slobber. Drool is a tool, kids. Use it," Professor Knight instructed.

He looked to see Sulley doing a very impressive scary face.

"Now here is a monster who looks like a Scarer," Professor Knight commented then continued, "You want a hope of passing this class, you better eat, breathe, and sleep Scaring."

Y/N and Mike looked at Sulley. He clicked his tongue at Mike then threw a wink at Y/N. They both rolled their eye/eyes and resumed their positions from before.

As the semester continued, Sulley was too focused on partying with the RORs while Y/N and Mike focused on studying. Randall and G/E/N even helped them; not to mention that the two were dating. Also, Mike and Sulley were competing against each other the whole semester, whether it was testing or just running on the treadmill. Y/N was getting a little mad about it since she was always in the middle of it. Even though she was not happy with Sulley making fun of Mike, she still had a soft spot for him.

Another class where they had to stand, he tested Mike.

"Ogre slump," Professor Knight instructed.

"Zombie snarl," he continued.

"Dominant silverback gorilla," he finished.

"That is some remarkable improvement, Michael," Professor Knight complemented.

Then he approached Y/N and she did what he asked of her.

"Gremlin," Professor Knight requested.

"Critter," he kept going.

"Crowley Demon," he concluded.

"Great work, Y/N. Your techniques could even scare adults," Professor Knight said.

Y/N smiled then returned to her usual position.

Professor Knight approached Sulley, who did the same scary face he did the last time.

"One frightening face does not a Scarer make, Mr. Sullivan," Professor Knight told him.

Sulley then looked at the two monsters. Mike clicked his tongue at him while Y/N winked at him with a smirk. Sulley just gave them a look like "Are you serious?"

The day of the final exam finally arrived and Mike and Y/N were ready for anything.

"A Tauntaun grimace with extra slobber," Mike and Y/N said.

"You got it!" Randall and G/E/N answered.

"That's what I'm saying," Mike cheered as he and Y/N high-foured.

"We're gonna ace this exam!" Y/N remarked.

Meanwhile, Sulley and the RORs were watching them into the Scaring School.

"I am going to wipe the floor with that little know-it-all," Sulley smirked.

"Yes, you are, Big Blue," Johnny agreed.

He took his jacket away from him. Sulley looked at them, confused.

"Hey, wait. What are you guys--" he asked.

"It's just a precaution. RORs are the best Scarers on campus, Sullivan. M/L/N is actual competition, but we can't have a member getting shown up by a beach ball," Johnny explained.

Sulley looked to see the two monsters cheer.

"Whoo-hoo! We are on a roll," Mike exclaimed.

"Yeah we are," Y/N added.

Sulley turned back to the RORs and assured, "I'm going to destroy that guy."

"Well, then you'll get this back right away. It's time to start delivering on that Sullivan name," Johnny told him.

Sulley started to get a little concerned. He couldn't afford to get kicked out of the Scaring program. But he shrugged it off and went into the building.

"Today's final will judge your ability to assess a child's fear and perform the appropriate Scare in the Scare Simulator. The Child Sensitivity Level will be raised from Bed-wetter to Heavy Sleeper, so give it everything you've got. Dean Hardscrabble is with us this morning to see who will be moving on in the Scaring program and who will not," Professor Knight explained.

Hardscrabble came around the corner and polished her canister a little.

"Let's get started," Professor Knight announced.

The first monster stood in front of the simulator when the light blasted in his face.

"I am a five-year-old girl afraid of spiders and Santa Claus. Which Scare do you use?" the professor asked.

"Uh..." the monster started.

He then noticed Hardscrabble up on the balcony.

"That's a Seasonal Creep and Crawl," he answered uncertainly.

"Demonstrate," Professor Knight said.

The monster did so and he roared, making it scream. The little canister came lit up halfway.

"Results will be posted outside my office. Next," the professor announced.

Mike still kept studying as more students went up to try and pass.

"Focus. Johnson, Crackle and Howl. Yes!" Mike whispered as he got another question right.

"Mike, you've studied all semester. You've got this in the bag," Y/N assured.

"You do too," Mike smiled.

Sulley noticed the RORs come in and sit down. Johnny laid Sulley's jacket to say that if he didn't pass, he would be kicked out. Sulley looked at Mike and walked past him, purposefully knocking his books over.

"Hey. Do you mind?" Mike asked.

"Don't mind at all," Sulley smirked, winked at Y/N, then quietly practiced his roar.

Mike got up, glaring at Sulley.

"Come on, Mike. Let's just move," Randall said.

"Yeah. It's not worth it," Y/N added.

"Trust us on this," G/E/N remarked.

The others started moving while Mike picked up his books.

"Stay out of my way. Unlike you, both Y/N and I had to work hard to get into the Scare program," Mike said and turned to leave.

"That's because only one of you actually belongs here and it's not you," Sulley scoffed.

Mike stopped and quietly growled at the blue monster. Sulley returned it, making Mike back up.

"That's what I thought," Sulley chuckled.

Mike dropped his books and the two of them started challenging each other's growls. Y/N, Randall, and G/E/N noticed and Y/N quickly took action.

"Guys, cut it out," she commanded quietly.

"Not until he respects me," Mike said.

"What is there to respect?" Sulley insulted.

"Shut up!" Y/N whisper-yelled and shoved Sulley, making him trip over a book.

"Whoa! Whoa..." Sulley exclaimed as he was sent toward Hardscrabble's statue and canister.

He bumped into it and the canister fell on the ground. Everyone gasped at that. Then the canister's scream was released and it flew around the classroom. When it was finished, it landed right in front of Mike, Sulley, and Y/N then broke. Hardscrabble landed behind them and lifted her now destroyed canister.

"I'm so sorry," Mike apologized.

"It was an accident," Sulley insisted.

"Honest," Y/N added.

"What? This? My one souvenir from a lifetime of Scaring? Accidents happen, don't they. The important thing is no one got hurt," Hardscrabble responded calmly.

"You're taking this remarkably well," Mike replied, a little surprised.

"Now, let's continue the exams. Mr. Wazowski, I'm a five-year-old girl on a farm in Kansas afraid of lightning. Which Scare do you use?" Hardscrabble asked Mike.

"Shouldn't I go up on the--" Mike wondered.

"Which Scare do you use?" she repeated.

"That is a Shadow Approach with a Crackle Holler," Mike answered.

"Demonstrate," Hardscrabble requested.

He prepared to do it, but didn't get the chance to.

"Stop. Thank you," Hardscrabble said.

"But I didn't get to--" Mike started.

"I've seen enough," Hardscrabble interrupted then quizzed Sulley, "I'm a seven-year-old boy--"

He just roared in response.

"I wasn't finished," she stated.

"I don't need to know any of that stuff to scare," Sulley insisted.

"That 'stuff' would've informed you that this particular child is afraid of snakes. So a roar wouldn't make him scream, it would make him cry, alerting his parents, exposing the monster world, destroying life as we know it, and of course we can't have that. So I'm afraid I cannot recommend that you continue in the Scaring program. Good day," Hardscrabble explained.

"Wait, what? But I'm a Sullivan," Sulley pointed out.

"Well then, I'm sure your family will be very disappointed," she responded.

Sulley looked to see the RORs leaving with his jacket. He couldn't believe he was kicked out of not only the Scaring program, but also the RORs. He looked at Y/N and Mike, huffed, and left the room.

"And, Mr. Wazowski, what you lack is something that cannot be taught. You're not scary. You will not be continuing in the Scaring program," Hardscrabble told Mike.

"Please. Let me try the simulator. I'll surprise you," Mike requested.

"Surprise me? I doubt that very much," Hardscrabble said.

Now Mike was speechless. All that time studying and he didn't even get a chance to prove himself.

"And Miss M/L/N, that kind of behavior is not tolerated here. I recommend you not continuing in the Scaring Program," Hardscrabble said then left.

"What?" Y/N gasped.

Mike and Y/N looked at each other, sighed, grabbed their stuff, and left the building.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A/N Whoa. That just happened.
